Most game companies have that kind of zeal and put in that kind of effort. They just call it "alpha testing" and do it before the game comes out.
I haven't played it recently so I can't really say what state it's in, but the reason for the low review scores is that it was broken on launch. Literally unfinished. Buttons that crashed the game, buttons that didn't do anything, components that affected elements that weren't implemented yet, etc. etc. etc. And the stuff that did work was clunky and unintuitive.
I bought it because I like making pretty ships, which is what I did in SotS.

I love Season Passes, but only for games I know I'm going to want to keep playing. I'm probably going to pass on this since I imagine more than 25% of the DLC is going to be multiplayer and as much as I enjoy the multiplayer, I can't really put the time into it to keep up with the community.
Can't I just take what I'm wearing now and rub it with sandy rocks?
