WoW still has about 50,000 new players signing up every minute.

50,000 new players a minute means the entire world population would be subscribed to World of Warcraft in 3 short months.

It's a third-person shooter. I played the beta and, although was fun for a while, it ultimately didn't seem worth paying a monthly sub for.

They call it a MMO shooter RPG hybrid. I don't know where the massive part comes in. The max number of players on any map in AvA is 24. I guess the RPG element was the unnecessary leveling up where you would gain access to a wider variety of weapons/armor/dyes and open up more PVP modes and PVE missions. You get one point every other level that you would put into a tree that would enhance your abilities (you do more damage, you can take more damage, your DOTs last longer, etc). All sounds like a pretty glamorous RPG, right? But all the leveling just seems so pointless in a game where skill should be the deciding factor, not level. The armor you gain access to in level is purely cosmetic. The weapons do more damage/healing and some have secondary abilities. There is crafting, but I have no experience with it. From what I've read, it's shallow, unrewarding and forces you to play boring PVE games.

Every zone was instanced and there weren't any places to explore. With PVE maps, you go from point A to point B and kill the end boss. Usually done with 3 other people in complete silence because no interaction is required to complete the mission. The "Dome City" is the only place you can actually see other people outside of matches. It's not city-like in any way, it's just a name. It's an instanced zone and there isn't much to see outside of a few vendors. I should mention how you are forced to visit one of the vendors to allocate the skill point you gain every other level. That would be no problem if you could just park yourself at that vendor, but you occasionally appear in a different spot when you zone in. You can't use your jetpack in the city and are forced to walk around. It's a small zone, but it's still walking I feel like I shouldn't have to do.

Until max level, you'll be spending most of your time leveling up in PVP matches. There are five modes. It used to be that you could pick a mode and get entered into a queue until enough people entered the queue to start the match, but they didn't have enough people for games outside of Control and Breach (the first two modes you'll have access to with level restrictions). To solve the problem of long queue times due to lack of players, they decided to make one queue with a random mode. So if you were unlucky enough to get stuck in a mode you hated then you either had to suck it up or leave the game and get hit with a penalty where you couldn't reenter another PVP match for another five minutes. You can read an official post HERE. There's another post of interest on the second page, fifth post down by HiRezStew that goes more into detail.

I'm not sure how many new maps are in the release, but in beta there were only 1-3 for every PVP mode. There were even some maps that were nearly identical to one another with a few very small changes. I have never seen a game reuse maps like this. Seems really lazy and makes the game feel much smaller.

If they removed the single queue/random mode crap and added more PvP maps, I would probably consider playing this game without the sub. The matches can get pretty hectic, especially when it comes down to the last second where the counter runs out, but the game isn't over until one side is cleared off the objective.

Wiki isn't really good for discussions.

They could flush the money, same effect.

I don't have a subscription to Scientific American, but any big breakthrough would be headlines on mass media.

What I'm doing right now is an experiment.

No, I really don't think it's just me. A crew module on top of a rocket that splashes down in the ocean. That's the Apollo.. and it also happens to describe the Ares.

I was just looking for someone to name one experiment that couldn't have been done on Earth that produced anything worth the money. I'm not saying they shouldn't spend money on space research, I just don't think there's any need to send humans into space to do any of it. What are NASA's ambitions? Well, they want to build a base on the moon. Why? Because they believe it will be a good jumping off point for the mission to Mars? Okay, but why go to Mars? Being the closed minded individual I am, I can't think of any good reason to spend the money or risk the lives to go there. It would make more sense to hold off on going 35 million miles until we have improved technology that isn't reminiscent of something developed 50 years ago.

NASA needs $22 billion dollars a year? What the hell are they doing in space with all this money, flushing it down the $19 million space toilet? Seriously, when was the last time you heard about some big breakthrough from research done in space? What do they do on the ISS all year round? And then there's this new space shuttle they're working on--is it just me or isn't that just another Apollo craft? I guess they managed to find a way to go back in time.

I can see how people may be opposed to used good sales because the manufacturer isn't making any money on the sale, but isn't this how our society functions? Anyone who is in the business of selling physical goods just has to deal with the fact that this is going to happen. There's always going to be people who buy new just like there's always going to be people who buy used. It all evens out in the end.

BUT saying used game sales is like piracy--well that's like saying used car sales is equivalent to auto theft. Doesn't this also brand the financially poor as criminals when they buy from the Salvation Army and the people who make donations their accomplices?

Tried Viva Pinata on the 360 and the controls were horrible. I don't quite remember what the deal was, but it was set up unlike any other first or third person game making movement extremely frustrating.

This, on the other hand, is completely outdated information. Stats do matter, and they matter quite strongly. Not as much as a game like WoW, but they've got a good balance between original AoC and such games.

I apologize for spreading misinformation. I wouldn't have thought they'd change their stance on stats not mattering. They always said they didn't want gear to unbalance game play. Guess they figured out one of the things that keeps people playing is gear.

Let me ask you this.. Can boss mobs 20 levels below you still one-shot you? I remember that was something they changed while I was playing and caused so many complaints that it made one of the biggest forum posts at that time. Funcom acted like it was all working as intended, of course.

The game really left me jaded. No matter how much better it may be now, I will never install that game again. They left a horrible first impression on a lot of people.

How much hard disk space do they take up? Do you have to keep reinstalling them every time you reinstall Windows? I usually format and do a clean install of Windows every 1-2 years and I don't reinstall any games other than a few I have a current interest in.

So, am I reading this right--buy the game for $19.99 and play 20 levels "free"?

I'm pretty sure that you can download and play the trial without buying the game. Although, buying the game will get you 1 month of free time. I tried it when it first came out and I could only stomach 3 out of those 4 weeks.

Conan's crafting has got to be the worst in any game I have played. It was almost like they added it in just so they could say they had it. You can't gather until level 20 and you can't actually craft anything until level 40 and the items you can craft are horrible in every aspect.

Also, stats don't matter in that game.. which I never did understand. If it's a PVP-centric game, and stats don't matter, then why even have armor and weapons? Why make you level? It's just so pointless.

You don’t need to be playing a game in which you impale, decapitate and dismember people.

"Despite his extensive credits, Wittenberg earns roughly $30,000 a year from his video game work and, like most of his peers, supplements that income by doing voice work for animated TV shows."

So he made $30,000 in what amounts to a part-time job and he's crying poor. He "supplements" THAT income with another part-time job. How much did he make between the two? He probably only works 6 months out the year and makes $50,000, but he thinks he's getting shafted?

@Narf2029 You make $25,000 for an entire year's work. This guy makes $30,000 for what amounts to a month or two of actual work. When you look at the numbers, he's actually over-paid.

With the proposed $800 for a 4 hour session, even if the actor worked only *4 hours a week* for a year, they would have grossed $38,400.

I don't understand what the problem is. You don't consider $30,000 to be a fair annual wage? That article doesn't mention how many hours these people actually work to earn that money, but I'm sure it's no where near 40 a week. You have to also consider how much actual "work" they do. I wouldn't call talking into a mic for a few hours a week a grind. If anything, these people should be getting paid LESS. At the end of the article, it says the union is proposing $800 for 4 hours. Does that really make sense to anyone? Many blue collar workers make little more than half that and they have to work 10 times longer to get it.

Just because they work in the "entertainment industry", everyone assumes they should be making 6 digit salaries. It's ridiculous.
