I was very active in Quake back then, and wrote one of the more popular Quake mods, CustomTF (Custom Team Fortress). You can find a number of my announcements on my releases here on Blues News if you dig through the archives.

I played semi-competitively in organized clan matches for Team Fortress for a few years as part of clan UVM. Having a good ping was certainly very helpful in online multiplayer matches, but it's not like as Jobst imagines it with everyone on dialup. Probably half the people on any random server would be on fast connections. I had university internet and then a cable modem in 1997. Jobst is not portraying the situation accurately by saying that it was an arms race for the fastest internet. Once you have high speed internet, the governing factor for ping time was actually the routing delay to the server, which is something outside your control unless you are hosting the server yourself. By the time you get to the quarterfinals, all the players are going to have high speed internet anyway, and so Jobst is needlessly throwing shade here. You have to have skill AND a good ping time to win at Quake back in those days. Sure, it might be a small tournament, but 2nd place is 2nd place.

Jobst also repeatedly misrepresents what Elon said. At 35:17 Jobst says that "Elon played in the first ever American esports tournament" whereas in Elon's quotes you can seem him *repeatedly qualify* that claim by saying that it was mPlayer that had said that, and that he didn't know if it was true. Removing those qualifying statements is a dishonest strawman on Jobst's part. And then all the other criticisms are just nitpicking. The prize pool was a few thousand, Elon remembers getting a few thousand, actually got $750... this seems less like a lie on Elon's part and more an attempt to stir drama on Jobst's part.

Legitimately one of the best CRPGs of all time... sure it was buggy at release, but not especially buggy. I beat it without the DLCs, so I can't comment on how good they are, but DAMN the base game is incredible. Having Mythic play handled well is just :chefs kiss:

Subnautica 1 was amazing. The weird second game they made was not nearly as good, but they did add a bunch of new structures to build... thankfully they backported them into Subnautica 1 as well.

I have high hopes for this. The original game was an absolute masterpiece of a game. It's not horror, though most streamers tended to portray it that way. Instead, I'd say it was very environmental, and feeling like you're exploring a cave deep beneath the surface of the ocean was pretty wild.

"Nobody is forcing diversity into video games. It is happening naturally, as players and developers themselves diversify."

The whole point of the DEI consultants talked about in this article is to push changes in games to increase diversity. Sometimes these changes make sense, sometimes they're idiotic. There's no single answer to if these efforts are a good idea or not, as it really depends on how they are implemented.

Edge Studios, the people behind Legend of the Five Rings, a samurai role playing universe inspired by Akira Kurosawa films, consulted with a DEI group (https://www.legendofthefiverings.com/asians-represent/). Some of the changes absolutely make sense, as do cultural notes about being sensitivity to other cultures.

On the downside, they have been doing things like replacing the word "katana" with "long sword" about half the time in Adventures in Rokugan. They've stated that in future products aren't going to use the word honor nearly as much, because of a false historical narrative that because the version of Bushido that the west was familiar with was only written in English in 1899 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushido:_The_Soul_of_Japan), that there wasn't a concept of honor or Bushido before it, which is nonsense. Hakagure was written during the Edo period, and talks about the proper conduct for a samurai, and earlier samurai had been idolized for their way of living, like Minamoto no Yoshitsune. What's worse is that doing things like replacing "katana" with "long sword" isn't even accurate - A) they're not the same weapon, B) the fighting style used with them is different, and C) it's whitewashing Japanese culture. Ditto replacing "kimono" with "robes", "wakizashi" with "short sword" and the other terrible changes that is just handling the cultural sensitivity issue in a completely insensitive manner.

Rogue Trader is buggy? Sure, a bit. Not that bad.

But it is a really, really good game.

The original Subnautica was a masterpiece. Subnautica Below Zero was just super bland and boring.

I am cautiously hopeful for Subnautica 2, but I'll be waiting to see how the reviews go before early accessing it. Learned my mistake with BZ.

Disney trying to ruin video games the same way they ruined Marvel and Star Wars (with some very few exceptions).

I played this for a couple of hours (since it's on Game Pass) and I was left wondering why in the world this game is as popular as it is... But, now that I come to think of it, I always think that about the insanely popular games. I just don't understand their popularity. There are so many games that are far better but sell far fewer copies.

In Pokemon, all you can do with your Pokemon is fight them against each other. Maybe a Lapras will let you ride it. That's about it.

In Palworld, they do all sorts of things. My base just got set on fire, and was burning down without the fires going out and I couldn't figure out what to do. So I brought out a water Pal and it ran over and sprayed water on the burning buildings and put out the fires. Other Pals you can fly on, or use as flamethrowers, or gliders, etc. But most are used economically in gathering, crafting, and building. You get a limited number out in your base at once, so you have to think about what combination of Pals you want out at once.

I just took a tour of New Homestead, which took like literally half an hour as the guide slowly walks around and shows you various points of interest.

I was waiting for like an explosion or some raiders to attack or something, but no... it just finishes, you get 200XP and that's it. Lol

I'm loving Starfield.

One of the best RPGs of all time, I just wish they'd release an official 64 bit patch for it. Or even better, an official remaster

I'm not interested in spending $30 on it, oh well.

I backed it, and tried it. It is one of the most boring grindfests ever. Rather than being revolutionary, it was just an even more boring version of WoW.

I spent a lot of time playing Outward. It's a deeply weird but interesting indy game, that is actually a pretty full fledged RPG.
