Okay, I was wondering about this. I'm currently running a Hauler doing rare runs to make money (thanks for the suggestions, guys). I was going to upgrade to a Cobra to do some more of it. And I was wondering about getting a fuel scoop. Now the Corba is a "4" ship, with three class 4 and three class 2 internal compartments. Would a class 2 grade A fuel scoop be sufficient -- or would I have to have a class 4 for it to be practical?

Also, been running shieldless -- do shields help against star heat? Is it silly to use a fuel scoop without shields?

Edit: spelling

Shields make absolutely no difference against star heat. Fuel scooping is pretty awesome. Some tips: Don't bother with a class 1 scoop. It does something pathetic, like 35 whatever units max. Class 2 at least will boost you to 60. Class 2 type A will do 75 units, which, I believe is as high as you can go. There's no scoop higher than class 2 that I'm aware of. A class 2 scoop will fill your cobra up really quickly, and they are fairly cheap. I think I bought my class 2 A scoop for around $300k.

I'm having more fun now that while I'm on a trade run I can scan for criminals and whack them for credits to make up for my fuel costs.

After I do my long distance run with my Adder (travelled about 100 Ly now) I plan on getting back to LHS 3447 and hunt wanted NPC's until I can buy a Viper (just dog fight with my Eagle), then pimp the Viper out and be a true Bounty Hunter and buy a Kill Warrant Scanner, Interdictor, and Wake Scanner (so targets can't run, even if they jump). I'd also like to try some of those kill missions at stations you can get.

Some people say this game is boring... haven't had that problem yet...
The Viper is a beast.
I am outfitted for bounty hunting but haven't had much time to do much of it yet.
The wanted criminals I was trying to catch in supercruise were faster than me so I couldn't intercept them.
I am also having a bit of a trouble outfitting the ship as I can afford the most expensive engine and shield etc but when I fit them as soon as I pull my guns out the oxygen thingie comes on so I have to put the guns away.
I guess not enough power. However I have the highest power output engine and most expensive power distributor so not sure what else I can do.

That is the problem with Vipers. Their power grid sucks. But that really shouldn't be a problem unless you're sporting railguns. I dunno, I sold my viper, but I don't remember having issues with that.

I forget who, but it was fucking awesome. He turns off his atmo when he fights to gain power. He's got about 10 minutes for the dogfight. Once he owns, he turns the air back on.

It might be but I found it kinda crappy for bounty hunting compared to the Viper.
It gets killed so easily, even with upgrades.

Mmmm...I dunno. Cobra can be beastly. However, the default Cobra sucks. You *need* thruster upgrades, otherwise vipers will run circles around you. Once you get that agility, vipers just get annoying, but can't really hurt you.

During the beta, before all the upgrades were implemented, the cobra was at all 'A' ratings. There wasn't much that could touch it. But, hey, you go with your viper self! The viper is awesome, for sure. I went with that and a type-6 for awhile, and it worked out great. I could zap fools with the viper, then trade with the lakon and use the money to upgrade the viper to zap harder.

I am so addicted to this game. I played for about 3 hours yesterday and made about $3 million credits. That said, it's a bit overwhelming to think I need ~$20 million to pimp out my Asp, while watching my credits go up ~$120k per trade run. That's about 166 trade runs...ugh.

I think having multiple options keeps the game more fresh. It's kind of fun to have one thing in mind, then get sidetracked exploring, then some fool interdicts you, and on and on. By the time you get to your destination, there's been a lot of epic stuff that happened.

I'm enjoying the Asp in that regard... It is a total hybrid atm. Trading ship, bounty hunter, and explorer. Cobra is very similar if you want a much cheaper version. The Cobra is perfect for rare trade runs.

That heat map site is cool! Thanks for the link. I'm down in CF 464.

I'm loving the Asp, but holy fuck is it expensive to upgrade. 'A' rated internals cost $5 million each. I got a 'B' frameshift drive, so I can jump ~25ly unladen and ~19ly laden (104 cargo). I think an 'A' will make the range ridiculous. Still, I have a couple trading routes that net about $250k every 10 minutes, but it's getting too grind-y for me.

So! I tried out bounty hunting using interdiction. It's pretty cool! I sold my fuel scoop because it's too slow with the Asp's ginormous fuel tank and replaced it with the interdictor. I'm having more fun now that while I'm on a trade run I can scan for criminals and whack them for credits to make up for my fuel costs.

One thing I haven't quite got the hang of, is that if you interdict a ship with less mass than you...if you are successful, you actually get catapulted past them, spin out, and take 5% hull damage. Which sucks, because that's more repair cost than the bounty you'll likely get. Apparently, you have to throttle back just before the "success" point of the interdiction. I think if you are pulling out an equal or heavier ship it doesn't matter. Still testing this stuff out.

Yes, I was always with 7km of the station and I have now been refused at at least half a dozen stations in half a dozen systems. I would say it was a faction thing, except I did one mission which was a + neutral faction. Either I'm missing something or was really unlucky in my start location or I don't know what...

Pretty bummed at the moment. Doubled my money on a trade, and now I'm nearly out of fuel with really no where to go.

/boggle

I have no idea. That is so weird. Even if you're wanted or are carrying illegal goods, the station will let you in. Unless you are "hostile" to the station I see no reason why this would happen.

Or it's a sign. Come to the empire, my friend. >:)

Refuse docking? Were you at a busy outpost? Otherwise, that shouldn't happen.

Edit:
It's annoying, but you can switch to solo and then dock/sell/whatever...then switch back. Oh, and like they said, you need to be within 7.5 km of the station.

Okay, wtf. Something is bugged. I bought a rare trade good. I traveled 150ly away to another station selling rares. I sold one, bought the other. I'm checking out the outfitting and station stuff to see if there's anything interesting. Come back to the commodities market...and, my rares replenished in my cargo hold? I sold it again and made another $150k. But now the rares I just bought are gone. Hum. Weird.

Anyway...every 5 minutes the rares magically reappear in my cargo hold. ??? I didn't want to exploit, so I went exploring around other nearby systems. Dock at next place...the rare I bought that vanished is now in my hold again....along with the one from 150ly away.

It's like groundhog day, except I'm making like $150k every 3 minutes. :\

I found this site, which is useful to help you find good trading routes.

It's filled in by players, but it's pretty accurate. If you are in the middle of nowhere your system might not show up, but you can set a radius in light years.

Heh. Trading makes you really good at docking. They should have a stat for how many times you've docked. I must be in the thousands somewhere.

Ships with jump ranges here

This seem to be giving more info like where you can buy certain ships etc.

I think I will aim to get a Lakon Type 6
The Asp is a nice ship but the Type 6 is better for trade runs

The type-6 is a great trading ship and very useful to start making millions of credits. The Asp, however, can easily be kitted out to match the type-6 cargo space. I sold my type 5 shield generator and replaced it with another 32t cargo bay. I bought a cheap class 3 shield. I have 112t cargo capacity now. I traded in my viper and type-6 to buy the Asp...it essentially replaced both in one ship.

I'm going to try out my first rare trade run. Bought an advanced scanner and detailed surface scanner to make extra exploration money along the way. We'll see how this goes...

Yeah, I had that happen in beta. I lowered my speed to min in super cruise, then walked away for a minute. Came back to my ship being dead after ramming into a star.

If I'm in deep space I'll save/quit, otherwise I'll just go dock. I didn't know you can log out in a battle ground. The game used to warp you back to the last station you were docked in...maybe that's why I'm in the habit of docking.

Yeah it would be nice to "bookmark" systems or something like that but I think they will add that in.
For sure we are not the only ones complaining about this stuff.
I don't have a second monitor so for me pen and paper is the way to go.

One other thing that kind of annoys me is the game doesn't pause when you are in the menus.
I understand for when you are online but for single player I don't see the reason.
Just a minor annoyance.

Haha, my wife hates that. She tells me to help with something, and then I say, "Wait two minutes, I need to dock".

Heh, or use one of those task sites like mind meister and make station info webs. But, yeah, it is a drag that you can't make notes, or even flag a system as "useful" or something, on the map.

If you have a bounty, by the federation by example, head to a station in federation space, dock, go to contacts and it will be either in the combat bonds section (if you claimed in a conflict zone) or one of the other 2 menus within 'contacts' (i forgot which) to claim a bounty you found randomly flying. If you are not in an area that faction controls, you cannot claim their bounty/reward.

You need to dock to check prices. On the commodity list it lists demand, supply, and if you click on a commodity it may tell you where it is exported to/imported from. Find a place that imports an item you can buy (via galaxy map) to plot routes, or use the galaxy map to display trade routes.

Also, (this may be obvious or not, but I still find it useful) the factions are color coded. Red = Empire, Blue = Federation, Green = Independent, I think Alliance is Orange? Alliance space is on the opposite side of the galaxy for me. You can filter the map to only show a certain faction, so you can zoom out without your monitor exploding in hundreds of thousands of dots.

Don't trust the trade routes in the map too much...that stuff is pretty unreliable. What's worked best for me is just hunkering down, exploring, docking at stations...then actually writing down any high demand or supply items and the prices. Eventually, you'll find a match for a high to high route. Once you do, the money starts rolling in (providing you have more than 4 cargo spots).

Totally want an oculus....but not the bullshit one out now. I want to be able to read text.

I effed up. I got impatient and traded in my ships for an asp. The cockpit is amazing! It's almost a perfect hemisphere of vision.

Oh, that mission I messed up came around again. Turns out, once you get a certain rank, you unlock a pass to a certain system. So, there wasn't really a quest....just fly to said system and you get a pass. My dumbass self didn't read the mission. Also, Lord Vall now, if you please.

Kinda seems right in terms of firepower we own (did have a 10m asp before a mishap) - my biggest problem atm is the Ai is a joke. I can take down Elite anacondas in my viper - erm no, that should not happen, not with my flying skills.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I swear a mostly harmless sidewinder is way more skilled than a "dangerous" anything else. Seems the higher level guys (especially cobras) just kind of float there and try to shoot at me. Meanwhile... I'm right on top of them shooting their canopy to death. The less "skilled" ai seem to be more evasive.

Edit: Lol, as soon as I write this I fight an elite Anaconda. It was close, but he blew out my canopy then rammed me. Needless to say, it didn't end well for me.
