While streaming is undeniably the software distribution mention of the future, and theres no escape from it, this is a bad move on the 3D Realm's part. HL2 worked because Valve was confident of the huge following they had from HL and all its incarnations. Prey doesnt have that luxury. Its going be have to be a really good game to succeed distribution this way. From the sounds of the backstory premise... honestly it sounds a little lame.

Yes I dont believe GW devs every called the game itself an MMORPG. They do sorta hint at it and often times compare themselves to one which is probably where the mmorpg misconception came from.

....have we determined who the good guy (if any) is in this mess yet?

Consumer, good
Vivendi, bad
Valve, satan

Ok I wanted to say "Ugly" for Valve, but that just not enough. Besides too cliche.

"Funny, I ordered through steam and got a box, art, manual, and a kick @ HL2 hat. True I didn't get a "CD/DVD" but who cares, that just one less "CD/DVD" I have to care about. The fact that I’ve been using steam for years now for HL / CS / NS shows that it works better then keeping track of my original HL disks… that are some where… I think… "

Hm, I didn't know you still get a boxed version in the mail even if you ordered through steam. If thats true, then well I stand corrected. Its true I do hate sifting though old drawers and binders to look for older games.

I guess what I'm griping about is that everyone makes the publisher to be this evil greedy empire from the depths of hell, and rightly so. But its business, its greed on both sides, all sides.

I can't help but feel sorry for VUgames. They have a great franchise on their hands, but they can't seem to capitalize on it. Steam distribution probably took a nice piece of the pie... Valve is one disagreeable cookie to bite on, and probably not at all how the VU exectutives were thinking about rolling and swimming in cash when they acquired the publishing rights.

HL is 100% completely Valve's sure. I understand that. But through steam distribution, the consumer misses out on the box, art, manual, cd, etc which probably factors at least 20% of the normal price of a game. Then theres the other aspects; mass production, distribution, advertising etc. All thats stripped away, but it still costs $50 on steam.

Point is both sides are greedy, but one side got stiffed.

"Calling Guild Wars an MMORPG is exactly like saying that HL2 is more like MYST than an FPS. Dumbass"

I think ppl didnt read that comment carefully. I agree with this statement. GW is less of an MMORPG and more of a supersized extended diablo. That't not to say you can't compare it to MMOs, pluses and minuses to both types. But one thing I'm glad I wont have to deal with GW: named monster camping.

I dont see how being instanced in particularly bad. Yes MMO is about interacting with others everywhere. But when you're out adventuring with your group and you run into other groups, what REALLY happens? You humbly greet each other, offer help, items and food, smile, bow and be on your merry way? NO! You fight over mobs. You fight over camps. You curse at each other for mob stealing, for training mobs on each other etc etc etc.

On the other hand, if you get in trouble, noone will be around to help. Noone to come and raise. And again being in a real shared world adds alot to the atmosphere. But most of the time all you see is rudeness behind anonymity.

Also there will be no unexpected pvp, no high levels ganking you from out of nowhere. So you see there are pluses and minuses to both implementations.

I'm taking the wait-and-see approach to this game as well. And I'm hoping that it will pick up and be good, but I'm predicting something of a SWG thing here...

Its sorta new idea; a break away from mmorpgs, and I think alot of ppl, myself included, are taking the wait and see approach. In turn that will likely hurt the game the less populated it is, the less its likely able to draw new players in.

I agree with the above though, I'm just tired of the fantasy setting. MXO didn't draw me in either...

I've been a fan of the NFS since NFS2, and I'm still playing NFSU2. I don't mind that they keep continuing the series, because I just like the arcadish feel of it all. I do miss the more exotic cars, and the country side tracks that the new versions seem to lack though.

Ooooh I'm so excited about this. I loved CoD and CoDUO. UO is definitely a worthy expansion, the bomber missions were really fun. My only complaint on UO is that the final few missions get really hectic, and while they are challenging and fun and crazy at the same time, they really kill my system which was only barely able to play the game in the first place.
