I am rereading the Dune series now, currently on Book 6 (Chapterhouse Dune). I'm even going to read the son's books 7 and 8, which I skipped the last time.
Before you read 7 & 8, I would suggest reading the prequels, it will helps complete the picture....
Specifically:
The Butlerian Jihad
The Machine Crusade
The Battle of Corrin
Outside the original novel which may be the greatest sci-fi novel ever written, books 5 & 6 are the best in the series, followed closely by 4.
Yeah, I started reading that prequel trilogy, finished the Butlerian Jihad, and had to stop. The writing is mediocre at best, and it feels like they could have compressed those three novels into maybe 1 novel. I get it, the AIs and pseudo AIs were pretty genocide-y, let's wrap it up.
I have 6, 7 and 8 to read or reread still, and I'm in the middle of Neal Stephenson's new novel, Termination Shock. Book 9 (the last novel, Leviathan Falls) of the Expanse also showed up at my house the other day, and that'll probably have precedence over finishing the Dune prequels as well. I may be dragging my feet for awhile on those, honestly.
