Parler was always a special case imo.... if you ever had the misfortune to get invited to any discussions on there you know why. Or if you are inclined, just look at the public linked parler post by the CEO, click on comments, since the hash was posted you can see the entire room. Those are the kind of people that get deplatformed... that is NOT a bad thing.

Uh, every console has a sub for playing games online, that doesn't mean every console game that connects to the internet is a GaaS. In fact, many of the real GaaS titles, the free to plays with oodles of MTX and battle passes and whatever else, are exempt from the online sub requirement because their ability to rake in cash is based on reaching as many players as possible.

You can get a cartridge with Animal Crossing on it, plug it in, and play a fully-functional game without ever going online. That does not sound like any GaaS I've ever heard of. They have had several free updates with seasonal events and new features, but they're free and optional... What GaaS does that? Any publisher who puts out actual GaaS titles is fucking disgusted by Nintendo for selling near 20 million copies of a game and NOT exploiting that audience with paid DLC and premium currencies and loot boxes.

I mean.. you are not wrong But on the other hand.. I doubt Nintendo would give Animal Crossing free updates if it weren't for that sub payment even if it isn't tied to the game directly. To me them all be GaaS. But at least for Switch platform maybe it's the entire platform that is a service instead of just 1 game.

The updates don’t require the service but visiting other players islands does, so they made the distinction. Anything else is just a hypothetical. It was still disingenuous to imply that AC requires Nintendo online (or whatever they are calling it).

When you call me disingenuous I gotta respond... because I said
The joke here is that Animal Crossing: New Horizons needs a subscription for online services

Nowhere did I say it requires it to run. And last I checked visiting other people is an online service. So mate.. what exactly is disingenuous here? ^^

Odd
You've experienced that before and I think so has Mr Tact.
If you take blue's original link and attempt to archive.is it you'll get a message that its already been archived and you can view it there (last time was 2 years ago). That same page also allows you to search for web pages that have been archived.
They have two options to share the archive, I always post the short one https://cooking.nytimes.com/guides/48-how-to-make-chili">but here is the long one.

archive.org has some weird DNS routing issues sometimes..

teaches me for not checking your link more

archive.today is super wonky, your link defaults to 404 unless you go first to archive.today (the actual URL) visit that, and then you can open your link.... super strange issue

Err, I don't remember -- what is the bet? You think he will have to be forcibly removed? I'd take that bet. He is going to fly Air Force One somewhere (probably Mar Largo) the morning of the 20th.
The bet was for five cinnamon cookies.

Feels like that was 5 years ago....

Jees games as service has really taken over. Only Nintendo is still moving boxes.

I do wonder if this is the last gen of collecting games. I still like looking at my old Sonic and Xenogears cases (though I dont keep very many and don't display them or anything). That whole thing is pretty much dead now.

The joke here is that Animal Crossing: New Horizons needs a subscription for online services. It is as much a GaaS as everything else. But yeah, depressing AF list

Do citizens of Frankfurt refer to themselves as "Frankfurters?"

They do indeed

There is even a very big newspaper named Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) ;p

That's too funny. It's like walking into a store and finding products named what they are. "White Bread," "Black Olives," "Milk." Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung sounds very German. You could say, very frank.

Your mind will be even more blown when you realize that a "Frankfurter" is also a sausage type and they are nothing like what Americans would think when they hear the word. What you call Frankfurter sausages we call Vienna Sausages. Because turns out.. those sausages you got in the US got nothing on real Frankfurter sausages ;p

And like anything in Germany, you can indeed make a full meal out of (2 different Berliner) and one Frankfurter. (Beer, Bread), Sausage

Somehow I don't think you can blame remote operation for a tidal wave causing major damage to a power plant. You might want to blame insufficient risk management planning though...

Maybe the risk manager only checked the plant construction site remotely? How else you propose he/she missed historic tidal wave markers 15m above their plant construction sites highest dam? Besides, the joke practically wrote itself, so you can blame me for aiming at that low hanging fruit

I work for nuclear power station. Our HQ is in Japan, we conduct all our managerial and financial business remotely. This has been done for rhe last 9 years ive worked here. All the senior managers do go to japan, i was last there in 2020 as covid stopped my trip last year.

I am not saying that explains a lot.. but I AM saying that EXPLAINS a lot.

I had to google how that works in Europe, and turns out that nuclear plants run in Germany have operational sec rules that forbid this but this apparently not so outside of Germany and France... the more you know.

In a time when office buildings are becoming obsolete

Company HQ's are never going to be obsolete... I doubt any (sane) corpo would do financial and management stuff over remote. (And let's not forget Engine Development). Also here Epic is just flat out being the good-guy for that local town. Since that shopping mall was clearly dead.

A lot of work can go remote just fine. I think that the past 9 months demonstrated this.
What doesn't work well is anything truly better collaborative, which is a lot of game development. Anything creative, really.

My company isn't going to mandate being back in the office until 2022, but I'd wager I'm back 2 days a week as soon as it's safe (July? September?) I doubt I'm ever in more than 3 days a week regularly, but also can't imagine less than 2.

Collaborative work is basically anything that is more complex than 1 person can handle And there is a lot of work like that, and a lot of it not like that. Lots of management work on a smaller scale level COULD be done entirely remotely (and.. AI driven without people even)

Point is, you want HQ for creative or collaborative work, and you want it all in 1 place optimally. What Star Citizen is doing for example is NOT what the industry sees as optimal strategy. You want your studios to be 100% self-contained and collaborative. The moment you split that (Engine vs Game, like say, Anthem) you have a BIG problem. So this isn't as simple a problem to solve as it appears. Zoom meetings do not serve well for complex collaborative work ;p

It's worth noting, this can be become as mundane as design meetings. Who makes the rules for designs in game-devolvement matters, and it requires CONSTANT input and output, work with concept artists, work with your actual in-house engine department etc. Things escalate quickly in complexity when you want to push that into daily (now there is a nightmare!) 1 hour zoom meetings with tiny screens and delay.
