I thought Trump was all about lowering taxes? Oh right, only for the rich, and apparently, Australians, since they seem to be big Trump fans.

Don't be absurd, politicians never do what they say, they are only skilled at lying, otherwise they wouldn't become elected.

Sales are never bad. If sales seem bad, than its you, not the sales. Its you already having most of the games you want

Though it would probably behove Steam to call out when games have nudity.

Nudity, Mature, Adult, Sexual Content....these are all current tags for game descriptions on Steam that are currently used. Do you mean something on top of that or am I misunderstanding?

More blatant. I'm not looking for those tags, but I've never seen them.

Then again, I don't read steam pages. I find discovery impossible there, so I figure out what I want then find it on steam.

Fact is the feature you want already exists and if you used steam store pages for even 2 minutes you'd know they are not only there, but a great tool for discovery, especially niche user tags

If more ppl would vote with their wallet, we would not have this kind of issue, however, having a label "loot box alert" attached to the game would be a small step in recognizing that this mechanic is a problem.

The crux of the problem is this entire scummy fake currency system big publishers (but really, mainly EA, Activision and Ubisoft) have setup. There is a reason lootboxes are considered gambling, since you often can't even pay for them with direct money transfer, there is always 1 more step involved which detaches you from the payment, and especially for younger people this is a huge problem. And just like casinos give you chips for money, EA gives you fake money for real money that THEN lets you buy loot boxes. Why are casinos gambling if loot boxes aren't?

The gaming industry's argument is that the player never "loses" when opening a loot box; a reward is always provided, even if undesirable.

It's hard to argue against that, because the risk of "losing your bet" is critical function of gambling.

But in some ways, loot boxes are worse than casino gambling:
  • Most publishers provide NO WAY of exchanging your loot (ie casino chips) into real cash.
  • Most publishers provide NO WAY of exchanging your loot into other games, including sequels (ie: chips can't even be played on other tables or leave the casino).
  • Most publishers provide loot that boosts the players ability to win/earn/achieve results in the video game, so there is a more complex psychological connection than just winning money. (ie: chip value is more than just a direct relationship with money)

  • Then toss in the element of selling to kids, and we've got ourselves an industry that has gone too far without regulation... IMO...

Technically you could still be losing your "bet" if you don't get anything you wanted out of your purchase and with no way to recoup any losses (like say, on Valves lootbox platform) the only way publishers could argue themselves out of that, is if they would not allow duplicates, so the chances would increase the more you got and there'd be a fixed amount of money needed to get all. But either way it would remain a game of chance. And that is the definition of gambling....

Meh, in the end this absolutely needs regulation. Casinos are heavily regulated, and publishers managed to convince me that they too are as criminally greedy and disgusting as mafia run casinos of yonder. Good job they did with that. Now, maybe because I have gotten ever older, I find this disgusting and especially because companies like Activision EA and Ubisoft to some extend push it ever beyond the limits of good taste, as usual.

It is ZERO different from any other type of payola. Remember that shit from a few years back with sites like PC Lamer getting static because of their giving good reviews to big advertisers and shitty ones to those who weren't? All in the pretense of maintaining the appearance of being professional and unbiased when nothing could be further from the truth. It's STILL the same. There are no free lunches. Someone gives you something they expect something in return.

Nonsense, the integrity of your ethics starts and stops with you and only with you. And if I had been in such a situation (thankfully none of my employees are nor were stupid enough to try that) I would have leaked this shit instantly. I absolutely despise such scummy behaviors in this industry.

And no amount of money or threat would let me forget that principle. I never reviewed any game I worked on. Especially before Steam made public who got games for free (Although that system is HUGELY flawed)

Does anyone know if they bought the Nexus IP?

I'd love to see another Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

They own the IP yea, but I doubt they wanna do anything with it.

Wasn't there a Kickstarter or something for Nexus 2, many many years ago? I may be mistaken but it was probably one of the first kickstarters for a video game. They wanted half a million or something and didn't reach the goal. They also said that this was probably the only chance of bringing that title back.

I remember when Koch Media published the first Gothic. Then JoWood published the second and the third one. Both went bankrupt. I'm rather happy that Piranha Bytes have a different publisher now.

They had permission to do that But it failed utterly and the studio went down. IP reverted to THQ, then to THQ Nordic. Not sure if that really means IP or just distribution agreements though.

And PB has THQ Nordic as publisher FYI ;p

Testing. It's a thing you should do.

Not even testing, I avoid silicone bases like the plague exactly because of this crap. Oils with high acidic levels leak out and that's never a good thing to anything you place it on and you don't need testing to know that, look up how silicone is made and it hits you like a white ring on a wooden surface. Just get normal natural hard rubber feet like every other pleb! When it works on my fat Teufel subwoofer on carpet it works for these dinky speakers.

Apple - Where the only thing of high quality is the price.

That said, for a flawed speaker design like this it makes perfect sense, without soft dampener underneath you'd hear it vibrating like hell ;p

And yeah, I realize how much I sound like a shill or fanboy right now. But this is one of those games. Somehow, behind the silly bugs and performance issues, the purest of dev passion is bleeding through. I hate to see people not supporting these kind of devs. I know it's irrational, but fuck it.

Well, nothing wrong with liking a game and wanting to support crazy developers, I know I am like this with Nier: Automata

That said, the game would have to convince me on its own merits for me to buy it. And currently I got other stuff to play... We'll see how much they support it post release, seems it needs a TON of patches.

The only difference here is these guys got caught. Devs/pubs giving away copies for positive reviews is zero different.

It's plenty different, employees are banned by TOS from reviewing (including freelancers), non employers are not. Any Indy dev working on Steam knows this, because they read the TOS before signing on.

I know I did And you'd be surprised how much more relevant review score is nowadays, Steams entire algo uses review score primarily. So a good youtube channel promoing your game might not actually do anything for you if that doesn't translate to (positive) reviews. It has become super important to pick the right youtubers and streamers to give games too.

Also, any "product given for free" review gets flagged and easily visible.

Employees can still make topics in forums or boards or whatever. But reality is that this was a shitty low quality MMO

Wow... Koch Media + 3 developers + Deep Silver + IP was only worth 120m? You'd think Saints Row + Dead Island + Metro alone would be worth that, but I guess not considering how much they fucked it up.

Well the real problem is that this is apparently executive matter, when it, at least if you want to call yourself a free nation, should be judiciary matter.

These CEO's broke the law, and leaked the private data of 140m US citizens. Why are they not suing? Why are they not camping in front of that CEO's house with Mr. Molotov and Ms. Kalashnikov?

If these people can commit such vast crimes and you let them get away without any danger to their existence then you REWARD these fat cats in their gilded cages even more.

Here in Germany a bit in the outskirts of Berlin I have the choice between mobile (very fast, latency~ 50ms to 400ms), cable (400mbit, serious congestion at night time (worse latency than mobile ie, around 60ms to 1000ms)), 60gb monthly cap then throttled down to modem speeds (yes, really)) and 6 or 12mbit unmetered DSL with sub 10ms latency constantly, sometimes even 5ms

Unbelievable what a total shitshow fast internet is in Germany. If I could I would nuke cable scammers as well. Selling 400mbit but with a fineprint that restricts you to modem speed if you actually use that bandwidth. Fuck these scammers. Blah!

(Yes, this makes my blood boil)
