How odd; people are nostalgic for a game from an era when developers were more focused on quality of gameplay, story and setting than streamlining and simplifying everything to maximize monetization? Who could have expected that?

Personally, I can't understand that myself; why would anyone want to play something that focused on making sure the player had fun rather than ensuring a payout for the stockholders. It makes no sense!

Here I was all pumped this was Falcon 5.0

Came to say the same thing (well, that and also make fun of flacons, like everyone else). The old Spectrum Holobyte / Microprose sims were the best...

Don't forget: no more mods that extend the life of a game. People playing old games have less need for new ones, after all.

Hopefully the new version of Steam will /finally/ allow us to change the font size. I'm getting older and Steam's tiny font isn't working for me anymore (and no, I do not want to use the abomination that is Big Picture mode)

And we thought the amount of crap on Steam was bad already...

Oh good, let's make remote desktop access easier. I'm sure tech-scammer companies will Love love Love this. There is no more getting their victims to download and install TeamViewer first; just click a link and type in a code. Thanks Google.

Considering that Fortnite basically bankrolled Epic's Game Store, I'd say it had a rather profound affect on the industry.

I am not a fan of online streaming of games, but even if I were, I would not consider Google Stadia. Google is far too quick to abandon application platforms - Google Reader, Piccaso, Google Trip, Google Groups and dozens more - at the drop of a hat. There's no promise that Stadia would be protected from this tendency. I know there is no guarantee that my Steam games will be around in ten years either but Steam at least has stayed around for fifteen years. I have no such confidence in any Google product.

Well, I guess that's one way for Valve to test their CDN's bandwidth...

"Hey everybody, get free stuff if you download and install a bunch of old games you aren't really interested in. Just start them up, get the freebie, and uninstall. Repeat as necessary."

If Steam is marking negative review bombs as off-topic, it should do the same with positive bombs, even if the latter were made with all the best of intentions. Else it is too easy for publishers to game the system ("Ohh, the publisher just donated $5000 to anti-cancer research, how nice! Positive reviews all around!").

When I first heard about this, I expected a module with similar themes and was was therefore willing to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt. I mean, in sword-n-sorcery fantasy, its easy to have similar-sounding adventures; the whole genre is practically a cliche by this time.

Then I read the examples and - wow - that is some blatant plagiarism. The author copied the entire adventure, and then went through it to change some details, both to fit the Elder Scrolls setting and (in a not too successful) attempt to disguise his malfeasance. Honestly, it looks as if it took as much work to create the plagiarized work as it would have to create something entirely new, despite the fact that despite all that effort it's still very obvious that the adventure was copied. Talk about doing stuff the hard way.

I'd love to learn more about this story. I can't imagine this was anything done intentionally by Bethesda; either they foisted the job on a single untrustworthy (and now certainly fired) employee, or hired the job out to some contractor. Either way, that person is going to have a black mark next to the name for years to come.

All very good and not too unexpected, but the first thing that went through my head as I read this was, "Oh god, Jim Sterling is going to be unbearably smug about this"

(and deservedly so, but still...)

That reminds me of when I got stuck in the big blizzard of 1983 (?) in NYC. All the highways basically got shut-down. I (and tens of thousands of others) got stuck on the Major Deegan from about 8PM until the plows could finally push through in the early hours of the next morning. Fortunately, we had a full tank of gas, blankets and even chocolate bars in the trunk so we were merely discomfited rather than threatened (if things had become truly desperate, we could have left our cars and sought shelter in nearby buildings that were a few hundred feet away, but this was NYC in the early 80s and abandoning your car meant you weren't going to see it in one piece again ;-)

But the drive home after the plows came through had the same quiet, almost post-apocalyptic vibe.

I haven't thought of that blizzard in /years/.

Oh, please no.

These are my memories of XIII. It's been 15+ years since I played it but it still leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.

XIII had an interesting cel-shaded style and setting, but god it was like a cesspool of all the worst game-play tropes. Instant-death bottomless pits you had to jump over. Annoying escort missions. Instant-fail-if-detected stealth-missions. Over-powered bosses. Find-the-keycard doors. Mid-game stripping of all your gear.

This is not a forgotten classic that needs a remaster. I wouldn't mind another game in the same setting - preferably by someone who knew had to make interesting gameplay - but leave the first to rot in some unmarked grave.

Everytime I read a headline about this game, my first thought is that it is the long-awaited sequel to Eidos' forgotten gem, "Project Eden".

Then I learn it's just another tower-defense game and disappointment sets in once again.

Ha. I just reinstalled Fantasy General in my DOSBox build. I think saying it "reinvented the genre" is a bit much; while Panzer General helped revitalize classic wargames, Fantasy General was basically just PG with a fantasy re-skin. Still, it had a great (CD-Audio) soundtrack and it wasn't a bad game, if you liked that particular genre of game.

It's a bit telling that their video-reveal doesn't, you know, actually reveal any gameplay; they know quite well wargames /still/ aren't a crowd favorite. Still, while I doubt they'll be much more than a niche title, best of luck to them. Wargames are due a revival.

Ah, another once-a-fortnight freebie from Epic. Time for the usual procedure. You know the one:

- Open EGS
- Add free game
- Close EGS
- Forgets game exists
- Re-discover game on Steam in a few months and plays it there.

Honestly, at this point Epic should just automatically add the game to all its subscribers libraries and cut out the middle-men. Think of all the time it would save!

While I am all for these older Blizzard games appearing on GOG, I gotta say that I don't understand Blizzard's strategy. Why put these games on GOG and not on their own Battle.net service?

Why give a third-party a cut of the profits when you have a perfectly good storefront and can keep all the profits for yourself? Is this an admission that their own Battle.net store isn't giving them the exposure (and sales) they want? But then why not put it on Steam? I mean, I love GOG and think it is the perfect home for older games like these, but it seems an odd move for ActiBlizz.
