Haven't played Alan Wake yet but Dead Space 2 is one of the smoothest and best feeling shooters I have ever played.

Logitech makes an awesome 360-like controller that also works with older joypad drivers and games (the 360 controller does not) and I have seen it for as low as $20 on amazon and the like.

The 360 controller really is awesome though, and many modern PC games play better with it besides Dark Souls. Assassin's Creed is a good example.

I was gone for most of 2012 but I have bought pretty much every 2012 game I wanted in these sales. Only exception being Borderlands 2, but as a solo player it's much lower on my priority list than it would be for an online gamer.

Now I have to make the agonizing decision of which to play first. I'm thinking Dishonored or Far Cry 3.

It hasn't been on deep sales until today either, so they likely made around 15 million. Good for them. Not my kind of game but I respect it.

You are amazingly skilled at ignoring what others are saying aren't you? An offline mode indeed is a viable means of playing a game as long as the offline mode works as they advertise. According to many accounts it thus far does not in AC 3.

Assassin's Creed 3 seems to be spelled wrong in the news story. I could of sworn it was about Far Cry 3 and the service issue which was fixed by playing in offline mode, which is what I obviously referring to.

I don't have hands-on experience with either game, I've been overseas for almost a year without my gaming PC. When I say "never had a problem with Uplay" I mean in my experience, obviously. When I say the Far Cry 3 issue is not "as horrible" because you can just put it offline mode, I am using information received from reputable news sources. I didn't consider or care about Assassin's Creed stuff when I wrote it.

Sorry if that offends you.

Sure, you can play in offline mode but then you lose the following:
- Multiplayer
- Co-op
- Achievements (which can actually be used to unlock stuff in Uplay)

If you actually care about those things, being forced to play in offline mode isn't a good solution. Origin is a much better service than Uplay. It doesn't break your game if you lose your connection. It doesn't force you to download and install a game before you can link it to your account. It lets you choose where you wish to download and install your games. It doesn't have a very good UI but compared to Uplay, it's a masterpiece of layout and usability.

Why did you equate "not as horrible" with "no downsides"?

You seem to treat this like it's acceptable or something. If you went to a restaurant and ordered a steak, you'd probably complain if the steak was under or overcooked. If you went to a movie and the first half hour of the movie had no sound, you'd probably complain too. Similarly, if I pay $50 for a game and can't play it for a day with full functionality because of a worthless DRM scheme, I'll probably complain. Consumers should get angry when the products and services they pay for don't meet expectations. Apathetic customers are just as bad as apathetic pirates.

Indeed.

That said, clicking the offline button isn't the horrible thing a lot of people are making it out to be. Ubisoft is an easy target because of their past stupidity, just like EA.

Yeah you're spot on, that was him alright. The exact words were "I wasn't exaggerating or kidding at all. I never have crashing problems, ever." Then he proceeded to blame people who mod their game and who don't know how to handle their computers. The whole thread pretty much called him out on the bullshit at that point and for amusement I linked a thread where he posted about Fallout 3 crashes he was having, proving that hes often so contrarian that he doesn't even agree with himself :D

It crashed during the 1.5 patch. Never crashed before that, never crashed after. I have always said exactly that. The comment below talked about crashing on day one, my answer was honest.

Same with Uplay. I have not had a problem. Am I saying problems do not exist? No. Am I saying you won't have any? No. I am speaking from personal experience, which is all I can do.

READING COMPREHENSION.

The simple fact is I don't have this problem anywhere else. I speak my mind and never lie and am mostly respected and have good debates. Only here do people label me as things (shill, anti-steam, contrarian) and fail to actually read what I write. The fact that's interesting from a social perspective is the only reason I occasionally still post.

Feel free to actually prove your accusations but I suspect you're thinking of someone else or making shit up.

Nope - it was you. I am pretty certain that I am not making up anything, but I have better things to do than sift through your post history. So whatever. And I didn't accuse you of lying per se, but you are a self-admitted contrarian. Don't tell me you deny defending Steam on GOG's forums (where I recognize you from your name and avatar) just because the prevalent attitude there is that it's invasive crap. You do the opposite here because the prevalent attitude is more to the opposite end of the spectrum. Personally I hate shit like that. You're just playing people for the fun of it.

I defend Steam on GOG because they are all worried about DRM, which is stupid on an open platform. I "attack" Steam here solely on the grounds of not wanting it to control everthing on the PC. If you really wanna research look at my posts on GOG on that same subject, I say the same shit. I just recently mocked people in the sales thread for only wanting to buy cheap amazon games if they are Steam keys. I told them putting all your eggs in one basket is stupid.

You guys paint me as different things because you sometimes don't like my opinions. I am admitted contrarian in the sense that I enjoy debate and if I have an opposite opinion I will point it out. I am not a contrarian in the sense I lie or pretend. MASSIVE DIFFERENCE.

Read my shit and try to understand my opinions and you'll see I'm not just playing with people.

You don't always need the government, sometimes the industry and a part of the customers are enough to cannibalize products. Don't tell me you missed the outrage after certain sex scenes in Mass Effect 2 (or 3).

It is quite simple, US Americans love their weapons and they fear naked tits. This results in self-restriction of the industy, that simply doesn't produce games with erotic or sexual content. It occasionally happens that we in Europe get to see some naked impression that get denied from the USA, as in Witcher for example.

But you simply can't produce a game story that would heavily rely on sexual events, as it would be impossible to sell it on the biggest market. Thus I say that the USA, in their bigotry, prevent erotica in games. One of the most elemental parts of any form of culture is not existent in games. Did you never wonder why?

I know all that.

Your language made it sound like there were real restrictions or processes in effect that made it so. I was just clarifying. I have talked to tons of people from Europe and elsewhere who are oblivious to the fact our ratings systems are voluntary.

Anyway, on a cultural level you are right (though it's slowly getting better). It's still all voluntary and driven by publisher/store paranoia though. I mean why does Valve avoid AO games entirely? It's not to stop porn from coming to Steam because they approve every release anyway. They just have a paranoia that once they host an AO game the press will crucify them.

And as long as the USA prevent even slightly sexual content in games for everyone on the world, I'd remain silent about how stupid countries are.

How do we do this exactly? Our ratings system is entirely voluntary and there is no government involvement, regulation or censorship what-so-ever.

Sigh... It's really frustrating when hive minds can't handle hearing individual experience and opinion. All they want is their perspective on the world regurgitated. Everything else must be a lie.

I could believe it in other games, but not FO3, sorry. Not at launch. In fact, I'm fairly certain that when the last time this was discussed, someone went back in your post history and found threads where you detailed problems with FO3 you yourself had despite your claims. It was pretty much proven to me at that point you just like being a contrarian. If someone says "up", you say "down". I loved FO3, despite it not being everyone's favorite, but it has nothing to do with saying whatever is socially acceptable.

Feel free to actually prove your accusations but I suspect you're thinking of someone else or making shit up.

I can't recall any serious issues with Bethesda games outside of one patch for Fallout 3 that made it start crashing a bit, but it was a later one, 1.5 I think. I don't think people are lying when they call Bethesda games bug-filled messes, I just think their experience is more in a minority than they think it is, or have less well-kept computers.

I have no reason to lie, it amuses me people here think I do.

Does the "offline mode" work-around not work 100%?

If it does, this isn't always-on DRM. If there's a button saying "I don't want your DRM to be on", then it's not always-on DRM. It may still be shitty, which is why I'm on the fence about buying it (especially as it's not on Steam, which I quite like), just not always-on.

I haven't played Far Cry 3 yet but I attached about 8 games to the Uplay client and played some games through it. It seemed to work exactly the same as Steam, there is an offline mode and every game (even previously always online ones) launched through offline mode with the internet unplugged.

Well I didn't. Should I lie and pretend I did? I'm not sure what the socially acceptable thing to do is here I guess.
