Yes, the way to end hype is to express disappointment that a video game will not cure cancer.

Confused

This is the sort of comment that makes me really feel for game devs and hate the hype machine.

Mass Effect.

These games somehow are my kryptonite.

Love the art. Love the characters. Love the setting. The story is such a hackneyed mess, yet somehow was infused with enough of the spirit of it all to limp along, sort of.

I have no real faith in their ability to capture the lightning in a bottle with this, yet...I hate myself for being unable to control my excitement.

I'm such a sucker for flawed gems. I guess I can't help but revel in their unrealized potential.

All these years, and Microsoft still hasn't figured out that being a dick to your customers isn't the path to universal adoration.

It's like they're baffled by this concept.

Don't remember seeing all this BS about story in the other games threads.
E:D got plenty of hate for this exact same reason.
No story go do whatever you want. People were complaining there is nothing to do.
I think games like the Witcher and GTA got people spoiled and they expect more from the open world games, than just being tossed into this sandbox and go make your own story.
I personally enjoyed E:D quiet a bit but I understand why people were complaining about it.
To each their own

Personally, my problem with Elite:Dangerous wasn't that there was a lack of things to do...

...I just found the things to do to be lacking.

Honestly, the most enjoyable part was landing at a space station.

I don't think you understand what a straw man argument entails. Regardless, the fact remains that theft, does not equate to software piracy, either morally or legally and should not be equated either in written or spoken language.

Bullshit.

Stop equating theft and software piracy. It's not the same thing and it makes you look stupid.

Pretty sure that taking something without permission is still theft.

They're offering it for sale, you take it without paying, that's stealing.

You can justify it in whatever self-serving manner you want, it is very much the same thing.

-Jn-

Assuming every pirated copy is a lost sale is quite the assumption.

I don't think he or Slick said that? From the individual's standpoint, I don't think their argument is out of left field. The moral problem here is taking something you're supposed to pay for. From that standpoint I don't feel there's much difference between theft and piracy, either. From the company's and the courts' point of view there will be a difference, and that's where lost sales come in, but I don't think Slick or JoeNapalm were talking about that.

Yeah, what you just saw? That's called a 'straw man', Oro.

And a pretty heavy one, at that. Need a diversion or something to pull that @#$% off.

That's an awfully long rant from an awfully high horse in defense of Olivia Munn...especially considering anyone who actually had the misfortune to have watched Attack of the Show or G4 Video Games Awards or any of that crap realizes there absolutely ARE "fake geeks" and Olivia Munn (at the very least) started out as one.

Her entire role on G4 was basically to stand around, look good, and sneer at what losers geeks are while some dude with cute hair mispronounced video game titles.

Saying you can't have a fake geek because there's no such thing as geek culture is ludicrous. That's like saying there's no such things as hipsters or emo-goths or outlaw motorcycle gangs.

There is ABSOLUTELY a geek culture, and just owning an Xbox or playing Flappy Bird does not make you a geek any more than growing facial hair makes you a hipster or wearing a NASCAR shirt makes you a redneck.

Okay...bad example.

But to suggest that nerd culture is simply choosing to be a nerd implies to me that the author doesn't even know what being a "nerd" really means, and the fact that he seems to think that "geek" and "nerd" are synonyms reinforces that.

Simply LIKING "geeky" things - many of which are increasingly mainstream - doesn't make you a nerd. Or a geek.

These are cultures of shared experiences and interests. If someone represents themselves as as either a nerd or geek without having had the experiences, knowledge, and common interests implicit to those groups, then they are indeed fake.

I can't throw on a jersey and go to a sports bar and pretend to understand what March Madness is, or throw on a leather jacket and head to a biker bar, and then announce I am a part of those tribes.

It just doesn't work that way.

It's definitely a niche game, but it is very impressive and good looking for what it is.

The fact that it is one guy is pretty amazing. If he really did get screwed, it's kind of tragic.

I have NO IDEA why I enjoy what is basically a mud simulator, but this game is one of the few that stays on my hard drive, long term. I don't play it all the time, but I do come back and play it.

When are you folks going to realize that we are no longer the target demographic for games?

We, THE GAMERS, represent such a small wedge of the pie, now that everyone...everyone...is playing these "newfangled vidja games" that the market has evolved.

WE are a persnickity, demanding lot, who generally know a Hell of a lot more about the IPs and platforms that the suits who now own the industry do.

I am aware of this, but I can still dispense my displeasure regarding it, which is fun to get off my chest, because hey why not? Nothing will change really during this great decade of Dumbed Down Games Recession except for a few nuggets here and there. The winning move is to simply not play (the bad gamez).

Fair enough - but don't despair, we have our own new IPs that haven't been annexed by the masses, yet. Just look at your own sig line.

When people shake their heads and ask how SC has made so much money, this is why. People want to reclaim their hobby...and maybe their subculture. Hell, hipsters even took our beards!

Gaming is dead. Long live gaming!
