Even though I played the very first few ,- I never did get back into any of the rest of the series.....

I jumped back in at TW: Warhammer because I got it in the Humble Monthly Subscription. It actually is a very good game. Less complexity than TW: Shogun, but in a way that fits Warhammer lore and the universe.

Random tech tress can work just fine and pretty much can guarantee that you don't play the same game twice. The issue is in designing core techs that everyone can use which allow you to progress.

I loved random tech trees in SotS. They pushed you to utilize techs that you may never have looked at if you always have access to the 'almighty beam of smiting'.

But more MOO clones are the one thing we do not need and I don't know why every fledgling 4x developer tries to shoot for something that is far in the past both technologically and gameplay-wise.

As someone who worked on Freelancer, I find that mention of the title funny.

Chris Roberts didn't fuck it up, Erin Roberts did.

Assuming that's true, who was in charge?

TW: Warhammer turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. I got my copy from the Humble Monthly subscription thing and that was a literal steal ($12).

I'll see how this one reviews and give it some time to cook before I think about taking the plunge though. Also price is a consideration, but I wouldn't mind paying $25 for it if/when it goes on sale for that.

OpenIV is a tool for modding the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, not for any particular game. It got started with GTA IV, hence the name.

Ah OK got it. Still seems like a huge overreaction and posting bad reviews which don't have anything to do with the game itself.

A game no longer being able to be modded sounds very relevant to the game itself.

Not if the developer never intended to support modding in the first place, which is usually indicated by provision of mod tools and/or documentation.

If Bethesda came around and patched out moddability from Skyrim and invalidated their mod tools, then I could get behind this sort of thing. But from all accounts, this wasn't something officially endorsed. Maybe I missed something though so feel free to point out where.

So the shutdown of a mod tool for GTA4 causes a flood of negative reviews for GTA5? Stay classy modern day gamers.

Steam reviews need some sort of proper moderation. I understand that the developers themselves cannot be allowed to do it due to massive conflicts of interest, but I am seeing more and more stupid reviews that deserve to be banned or simply not counted toward the review score of a game.

When someone with 60+ hours of playtime in a strategy game posts a review stating that the game is unplayable because one of their heroes' abilities is bugged, that person deserves to be dragged outside and flogged publicly with several lengths of Ethernet cable.

Similarly for people with .4 hours of playtime who post shit like the game is completely broken because they can't map a couple keys the way they want so it gets a negative review.

I'm not a fan of big publishers, but this whole thing just seems like overreaction.

What's the final verdict on this one? There were some really mixed reactions at launch. I like classic, base building RTS's, which I believe this is not.. but if it's still good for other reasons I'd consider.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing. From what I can gather it seems that they tried to satisfy the hardcore DoW 1 fans and the DoW 2 fans simultaneously and made the experience unsatisfying for both camps.

So its like the base building is there but it seems to be rather shallow and things which the DoW 2 fans liked are either missing or not fleshed out.

Also seems to be dissatisfaction with the way victory is achieved. Something about destroying your opponents core rather than the buildings in his base. I dunno.

Anyone remember that Neverwinter Nights mod which literally created a Magic The Gathering type mini game inside the gameworld? You could collect cards for it. The gameplay was almost identical except you watched it unfold with actual creatures and spells using the NWN engine. That dude was insanely talented.

You know the queue is winning when the sequel(s) are out or almost out, and you haven't even installed the first one.

I raised the white flag on that fight years ago. Too many games exist!

Another 4x space strategy game that misses the point. The AI is some of the stupidest AI I have seen in a 4x space strategy. There was better AI in MOO3 which is rather sad.

There are a lot of positive reviews on steam, but they all make excuses for all things the game lacks and the multitude of bugs it still has.

It is possible they will make some improvement to the AI with future fixes, but we all know that is a crap shoot.

You know that the game still isn't out yet right? And so the final build hasn't been released along with a whole additional race. Maybe you should at least wait for launch before making a final judgement.

I still don't want an AMD/ATI card.

Not sure why I'd pay to have to wait for fixes for practically every game ever.

"Cool man! Let's go play some <insert new game here>"

"Yeah...I wanna but I gotta wait for a fix first...can we play something old...er?" Embarrassed

Do you really not see the irony of posting this commentary in a topic about a Nvidia driver fix for a brand new game they had some release driver issues with? AMD has a terrible track record with this stuff, but it is mainly in their history as you don't hear much about newer games having issues, and when they do they are resolved pretty quick it seems. NVidia are the ones who have been screwing things up on the software side for a while. Geforce Experience is a fucking mess still, and their drivers are up to almost a half-gig now. Shadowplay/share is still a broken mess. Their installers are starting to unravel because of typos and registry errors with older drivers, to the point that using something like DDU is necessary to even install newer versions of geforce experience and other elements of their "software package".

Both companies are shit in the software/driver category right now. Yeah, they work.. but there is a lot of BS involved with either of them anymore if you look at the whole picture.

I think a third option in the market would work wonders to improve competition, quality and price, but no one else seems to want to dip their feet into the high-end graphics market.
