I bet they did this because it gives them an excuse to just re-use all the forest assets, but I don't care.

This is the most amusingly batshit thing I've seen in awhile and it makes me happy to be alive. I eagerly await wank in some part of the Internet over the fact that the wizards' staffs are American flags.

They've said more than once that the connection between Portal and Half-Life will never be more than enough to establish that they're simply in the same continuity, since they don't want to tone down Portal's mood to have it suit Half-Life's darker/grittier world. I think the Borealis just being in Half-Life and Glados' vague suggestion that the Combine invaded sometime before Chell woke up are as deep as it will ever get.

I used to lol at the Razzies, but giving one to Repo! over Paris Hilton just proved they didn't even bother to watch it. She may be a scatterbrained, idiotic, spoiled rich kid, but if there's one thing in her existence she did right, it was her role in Repo!.

I actually got an e-mail today saying it was now available. Moot point for me since someone gifted me a Steam copy a couple weeks back so I haven't followed up on it, though.

It's be kind of hard to do a meaningful FPS component in Freespace considering the Shivans' response to a planet is "beams from orbit." I remember thinking GTVA Marines must get huge sign-on bonuses considering their jobs probably consist of waiting around doing nothing, getting vaporized by Shivan beams, or attempting capture ops that don't go so well.

It's kind-of eerie seeing this, I just started filming a Let's Play of the Derelict campaign. It's my favorite to the point where when I think "I feel like playing some Freespace," I think of Derelict, not the retail Freespace or Freespace 2 campaigns.

But unlike electricity and telephones games are a luxury entertainment product.

The thing is, the disabled should have access to entertainment products. Depending on the disability, many of the disabled are very limited in what they can do to entertain themselves. Imagine a martial artist who also plays video games, but martial arts is the most important thing he's ever had in his life, and he wouldn't trade it for anything. One day, he blows a knee and despite regaining basic functionality, suffers from chronic pain and can't walk without a limp, let alone participate in meaningful physical activities again; suddenly, video games are a lot more important to him.

Would you want to sit at home all day staring at the wall because shelter and food are the only things you need to survive without having anything enjoyable to look forward to while surviving?

That's one of the most bullshit arguments made when it comes to game length.

Game length is, by it's very nature, a function of single player, and occasionally co-op. You can't measure game length in multiplayer. Besides, in COD's case, endlessly grinding deathmatch for hours on end so you can unlock new weapons and new game modes is not exactly high value.

Remember, these games are competing against RPGs that take 40+ hours to finish, racing games that can be played for hundreds of hours, and sandbox games which usually take at *least* 20 hours to complete. All these games clock in at the same price point. If you're playing a game that's 1/3 the length of Red Dead Redemption, you better have a f*cking amazing experience in store for me.

So no one plays CoD just because they enjoy shooting dudes for hundreds of hours, and no one refuses to play racing games because they see it as an endless loop around the same small patch of terrain grinding for first place in every race.

Hmmm, double standards...

Yeah, I don't see Bulletstorm causing a wave of controversy. It's hardly the first game to revel in its own absurdist violence.

Also, "shocked the public sense the beginning?" Can we get some more editors into the gaming journalism scene so it stops looking even more like third graders write it all even more than it already does?

I'm inclined to agree with Tumbler, but at the same time, it's amazing what people put down in writing. Hell, even if it was a joke, making the joke is about as sane as sexually harassing an employee through company e-mail.

Civ V runs like ass on my laptop. I bought my laptop for $400 a year ago or so, cheapest I could find with things I wanted. Civ V runs but after the game has been playing for an hour or so and the other AI's have tons of cities and stuff to manage the game crawls. In MP I can participate in a 6 player game or host a 4 player game. And higher than that and the game crawls. I have to run the game with the lowest settings possible, including the lowest res, 1024x768.

My main complaint is that it's all so much more advanced than Deus Ex. And I'm talking about core technologies...Gunther Hermann and Anna Navarre's augmentations where ghetto and they were portrayed as rustbuckets on the way out. Human Revolution's augs seem so much more capable than anything JC Denton or Alex D had, with the exception that the latter's was nanotech.

Admittedly, that's a big step, but again, Hermann and Navarre never exhibited anything close to what we're seeing in the Human Revolution trailers.

Yeah, that's my biggest issue with it as well. Why would they have ditched mech-augs in favor of nanites, when the mech Denton would wipe the fucking floor with JC and Paul?

It's why I never really like prequels. Too often you wind up with crazy story gaps like that.

But it's a small complaint. I gotta say the game looks pretty awesome, at least from the trailers. They sure make some impressive trailers over at Eidos.

Creston

I can easily see Gunther and Anna pulling off crazy stuff with their mech parts if they'd had better scripting in a better engine. Reletively speaking, JC wasn't better than they were, he just had invisible augmentations compared to their mechanical parts. It doesn't seem like the art design has changed so much as gotten a facelift. In cutscenes or in gameplay he couldn't do much more than they could, he was just as limited by the technology of the time the game was made. (Further Reading)

The look is pretty right; if Adam so much as wears a short-sleeve shirt, it's obviously he's an aug to anyone in public (if they want to do this perfectly, they should have a changing model so augmenting your eyes gives you Batou-esque goggles like Gunther had, for example, and have some people react to your visible augmentations in dialog. Or different clothing options; replace the trench coat with a utility vest that lets you carry more items/ammo, but people can see your arms.)

They should have just made this an "alternate ending" spin-off to DX1. Maybe have it where JC failed and Bob Page succeeded. That would have been infinitely more interesting than a prequel. It would have also made for one incredible cybernetic Bob Page fight at the end.

I'd rather they go off the Helios ending but ditch the entire "JC's brain can't handle Helios out of the box" angle. I really don't think it would've been hard to make JC the player-character again, it would be the perfect excuse to ratchet up your powers to levels other characters in-setting can't attain and you can keep the combination-ending where they destroy the Aquinas router to ruin the communications infrastructure so the plot would entail figuring out how best to rebuild society and who to put into positions to do so.

I have more hate for her husband, myself.

Fun fact: George Romero was going to direct the first Resident Evil movie with a script much closer to the game, and the studio dropped him because he wouldn't tone it down to get a PG-13 rating.

I expected this to happen, if they went with a prequel the tech would have to be retro of what was shown in Alien (CRT screens for displays?)

It would have come out looking like some steampunk sci-fi movie - I'm sure Alien fans would have liked it but everyone else would think it looked stupid, if they went all modern it wouldn't fit in with the rest of the movies.

I don't think it really matters where the "space jockey" came from in Alien, whatever backstory you can conjure up in your imagination would trump any prequel movie.

I agree; there's no way to make this interesting. Part of what makes Alien great is the complete lack of background. The AvP comics were careful not to mess that up, never implying the Predators had any sort of real control or say in the Aliens' existence beyond catching a few eggs to seed hunting grounds with. Trying to explain what we don't know about them makes them less scary.

I don't so much mind inappropriate retro-future tech, though. Enterprise had a fun time of it in the Mirror Universe storyline where the crew found the original-series Defiant and spent five minutes marveling at how awesomely advanced and futuristic the bridge looked even though it looked like the exact opposite compared to their own, less-advanced equipment.
