I keep on switching between AMD and Nvidia GPUs, now on GTX 1060, and this claim is pure bullshit. Plus I continue to communicate with a bunch of technicians working for different computer repair shops and co. From their experiences, the ratio of problems encountered relative to the market share between the 2 companies don't seem to point out a "winner" in the driver department. Both fuck up from time to time in what seems to be an equal measure.

Pfft. He might be trying to conflate anecdotes with fact but so are you. Also you didn't speak to anyone about video card driver issues, that's just some opinion bolstering. I don't really trust what a bunch of dudes at Bestbuy have to say about it anyway.

Of course the more people update their drivers the more problems they will encounter, that kind of goes without saying. Just by virtue of the opportunity for something to go wrong vs something that stays the same.

I forgot to note that we're seeing a big renaissance in indie and small studio efforts lately so there is definitely a big sub section of the market for $10-30 games that is being well served. I do agree with the article author that people following hype is their own issue. Any time I've preordered a game that sucked I've had no one to blame but myself.

You can't even say that the entire cost of development has gone up astronomically either. How many major titles don't use Unity, UE, or other prepackaged solutions for iterating your pipeline? Back in the day, that was a major chunk of development time and cost as every game was its own engine. Sure, I would agree that asset creation has gotten more expensive but the returns now are greater than at any time in history.

Many aspects are streamlined now but the costs have gone up overall as the cost of asset creation went through the roof. The foremost cost of development is simply payroll and those costs went up dramatically as the number of people required to push a major title to market increased. That's part of the reason so much offshore outsourcing and locational tax credit chasing began.

The cost to consumers has been relatively stable for a long time because the market grew so much. Unfortunately this has led to AAA titles following the motion picture business model. You speak of great rewards but seem to forget that there are also great risks, as most companies who went chasing WoWbux discovered.

In any case despite costs going up to both the consumer and the industry, I still find it very easy to get discounted games. I also don't mind throwing a preorder at a company who has earned my trust through consistent performance and often times preorders are the best way to get a good price.

Haven't tried it yet, but I will say that the Menu UI has that unimaginative slick boxy look like Battlefront. Basically it looks dumb and perhaps that's one reason for the console comment (there may be more reasons though).

Remember when games from the 90s and 00s actually put a little more originality into their design? LucasArts had interactive menus for example. Would be cool if EA Dice made the UI Menus look more like a period piece for ww1, less modern, old text, animated menu navigation. Obviously they won't though.

The UI reminds me more of Dota2 than anything else. It even has a similar HTML5 video player built in for tutorial videos and community content. I found the interface suits the PC version just fine. Hell as long as I can hit the server browser quickly then who cares, the rest is just gravy.

I gave a cogent response to your criticisms, several of which don't seem well founded IMO. I don't really care if they've reskinned Battlefront so long as the gameplay is fair to the theme and that its enjoyable. I feel like they did well by things here, coming up with a nice mix of arcade/sim play which is what BF always has been.

Anyways if you don't wanna pick it up then fair enough but I'm definitely going to. I think you should really give it some more time before making up your mind.

The game play is pretty bad. I assume nin is playing on ps4. On PC the game feels like a really bad console port. It is a reskinned Star Wars game. They have really taken a step back.

I jumped into BF3, 4, and Hardline, just now and the older games are so much better than SW and this mess.

It also needs MAJOR nerfs and balances. The horses are WAR horses with TONS of armor. The flame thrower kills from probably 100 yards as well as from BEHIND COVER.

I jumped into a tank a few rounds. You will OWN the game. Nothing really to stop you. If you are on foot you are toast. Such a mess, not sure why they thought this should be the flavor of their product. Was hoping it would be great and I would buy ahead of time from a key site, but even finding it at $40 I am not willing to buy it.

Game also randomly locks up for 3-10 seconds. Usually killed in that time, and don't even try and fly a plane.

I played for quite awhile and have to disagree with some of these points. The vehicles require a coordinated effort to bring down which is fine, AT tech wasn't exactly super developed at the time. Battlefield is supposed to be about teamwork, if you go off solo into an open area with no cover then you're gonna die pretty quick to anything. I had no problems killing people on horses either but to be fair I didn't encounter a lot of people using them and I was playing support at the time. Perhaps as Assault using an SMG they take too long, I don't know. The flamethrower supposed to be powerful due to it being limited and people using it are pretty vulnerable. They will certainly adjust some things based on beta feedback as well I'm sure.

I don't know where the console port stuff comes from, the PC version is outstanding. The interface has a server browser, its very fast and efficient. I even tested the matchmaking which worked as expected. You have full video settings, rebindings, joystick support and so on. Performance was great, averaging 80-90fps on my setup. The game itself is gorgeous in motion. I didn't feel at any point that it was a sub standard console port, quite the opposite. They finally made the Origin integration decent too, inviting friends and etc is as easy as Steam.

Things I didn't like - I didn't care for the ease of sniping, I saw damage drop over distance but not bullet drop. It wasn't my favorite map either, I understand they want a variety but the desert is just snipers galore. On release I expect class limit filters on servers will help with this. I also thought that the class kits were pretty ho-hum.

Most importantly though I didn't really encounter any bugs or show stoppers, it was all very smooth and playable. Most BF releases are awful so I hope that this continues. Looking forward to BF1!

Why do you even need fighter jets or bombers anymore with missiles and drones? They're a lot less costly to design, develop, fly/use, and maintain.

Whilst I'm quite enjoying XCOM 2 atm, I am not - as many other people have noted - enjoying how every goddamned mission is timed. It completely eliminates anything but a brute force approach. And on normal the game is woefully unbalanced compared to my squad equipment and size. It ramps up way too fast.

If you want a hand holding experience without challenge then pick a lower difficulty. XCOM 2 on Normal is very forgiving, the timers are not always mandatory and they are made to propel you forward instead of save scumming/bunny hopping every move hoping to trigger an enemy pod while you have your whole team in overwatch. If you want less timers then there are mods for that but they pretty much ruin the games balance, not to mention hamper a sense of satisfaction from actually rising to a challenge. Normal difficulty is fine balance wise, there is a squad size upgrade that you probably somehow missed and your first XCOM2 game will not be a winner anyway as you will make mistakes and need to learn from them. Go play Ironman, it is the cure to your modern gamer complacency.

We had a lot of flooding around here a few months ago and most of the deaths were due to people's own stupidity. One particularly outstanding incident had some lady drive around a tow-truck, that was blocking the road, and into 30 feet of water. It's unfortunate and a shitty way to go, but it's their own fault. I think it kinda goes with the general theme that people have a false sense of security, power and entitlement while in their vehicles.

We have a ResQMe in our vehicles just in case we ever went off road into water. We live near 2 big lakes and other people drive like crap so for $10 it helps me sleep at night. Reacting in an emergency is more difficult than people realize and simple things like your power locks failing can throw people for a loop. People just assume life is like the movies where they can open the door or kick the window out. A guy I knew in high school died in a freak accident where his car ended up in a river. Water pressure gives no shits about how tough you are.

NKD, I agree that this one goes too far but many of the "promises" people are holding him to are just vague allusions to features and other things. Is anything at all mentioned now fair game for people to assume it will be in the final product? I guess that's the age we're living in and developers need to be very careful with managing expectations. Murray is a guy with zero PR experience and Sony clearly made a mistake putting him front and center.

All I can say is that I followed the game pretty closely and I don't feel like I was sold a false bill of goods. That doesn't mean I'm happy with the final product though, far from it.

That happens during development and this sort of thing is why developers should never interact with the public. Everything is suddenly a promise and if a feature doesn't make it then the people who wanted it take it as a personal slight. Whether it was in the game at some point and cut or never made it, the effect is the same. I'm sure many of those were present but didn't make the final cut. Sony should've just stuck with traditional advertising campaigns instead of parading Murray around on late night shows.

Come on Verno, even you cant deny that a few driver versions ago there was a big problem with the drivers that had to be reverted. Nvidia even came out and admitted to that one. Im not one for dogging out Nvidia because I love there cards and drivers, but even NVidia has had their issues at times.

For sure but having issues at times doesn't mean "it happens every time with every previous generation card, every single time".

Nah I don't think everyone is full of shit, just a few of you

Like the people who say "every single time an Nvidia driver comes out it causes problems with previous generation cards". You wanna make a big leap, I'll do the same. People aren't allowed to not have problems with video cards I forgot and users never mistakes or have issues that could be their own. It's all AMD or Nvidia. Haha thanks again.

Which doesn't mean much because a good chunk of blizzards audience is under 22 or wouldn't know of games like doom, quake, or duke nukem 3d. AKA they didn't game on PC's in the 90's they think pc gaming = steam. If you don't remember the pre-steam era you really can't comment on modern gaming at all without massive distortions.

Err what? Where does this assumption come from? Have you been to BlizzCon? Blizzard has been around forever, if anything their demos probably skew older than you think.

But it appears that driver manufacturers have been slacking off, and Windows OpenGL support is not suitable for anything serious.

That's only half the story. Things stagnated under the Kronos Group for a long time which really set OpenGL adoption back. The dev/build tools supporting DirectX and its associated ecosystem are immense as well. Driver manufacturers were simply aware of where their bread is buttered, they are for profit corporations after all.

Perhaps with Vulkan or OpenGL ES on the mobile side we'll finally get there but there's still a lot of work to be done.

Freedom of speech has nothing to do with topical content on a private message board. Freedom of speech is about protecting citizens from government censorship and retaliation. Message boards are often forced to censor comments from disruptive members, many of whom have some sort of social or mental problem that causes them to lash out at other users instead of actually participating in discussions.

Perhaps you should do your own reading first before calling anyone else a mental luddite. You aren't entitled to act like a dipshit on the internet, no one owes you anything.

Random? There are repeating creatures there.

It's a procedurally generated game, what did you expect? It is the only way you can achieve a meaningful number of combinations without thousands of manhours that would make the game inherently unfeasible to create. It's becoming apparent that the problem with No Man's Sky is as much the users expecting way too much from the game as it is anything else. Whether this is a problem with the games marketing or just peoples ignorance about development I honestly can't say.

I guess that does cast things in a different light. Im pretty sure most people weren't aware of it either, and that tweet by Musk will only hype the game even more. It must feel good to have that kind of power, to help your friend out with a single sentence posted online. Before you reply I don't consider that a bad thing at all, regardless of this game's quality.

You were wrong, it happens to everyone. Suck it up instead of blaming him for your own assumption. It doesn't really matter if people were aware of it or not, its his game and he give keys to whom ever he pleases. No one is entitled to his generosity nor are you entitled to tell him what to do with it. Plenty of actual problems with the game and things the creator has said about it to complain about. Sheesh.

Exactly. A protected browser, firewall etc does the trick. Since I run with image backups, I can also be loose, I'm 30 minutes away from being clean.

You don't know that your initial image is clean is the problem. If you run no protection, you don't know any better. Once you get rooted you're done and without any initial protection you won't know any better. Any backup you make after initial installation could be compromised. User practices are important but you can still get exploited through no fault of your own and that's what you fail to account for. There are many exploits that will hit you regardless of how up to date Chrome is or what firewall you're using. You're just counting on luck more than anything else.

While I agree that many have turned their sites on commercial targets which are lucrative, there is still a massive amount of user level malware out there too.
