Blizzard old yellered HOTS, they went about this the worst possible way. I understand scaling back if you can't break through into the LOL DOTA size, but instead they just turned the table over like an angry 6 year old. Well I guess this was bound to happen anyway with those layoffs that landed today.

On a positive note I'm enjoying this now on the platform it was made for - PS4. The auction house self detonation kept me off of it on PC but couch coop is smooth as butter on the sony gaming gnome.

lol the auction house hasn't been around for YEARS. You also cannot say the platform it was made for. It was NEVER made for console. It got babied to be consolefied with the controls.

The game came out on PC back in like 1995 and then part 2, finally 3 many years later. It was always a PC game first, and then console to collect more $$$ for Blizzard's pockets.

Woosh!

I think its pretty fun still. Its not going to overtake the big boys and they every rework makes support more boring somehow but I can get three pretty low stress games in during an hour and thats not something the other MOBAs can say at all.

Note this has already gone to court in Korea.

Re: Guitar Hero,

Much like steam, if what you own is dependent on someone's continued good will in regards to servers and content hosting, you effectively own nothing.

On the other hand, paying a couple bucks once for going on a decade rental of games now has been a pretty good deal. But Valve is more reliable than Activision and Sony (recently shuttered Gravity servers).

Im going to guess it was related to how swingy the objective can be, since it takes concentrated effort. Often one big tree gets popped right away and the other sits untouched for awhile. This results in dead air in the match while everyone 5v5s next to some fort.

re:Beamer

Sure the "Grandma and Jr. needs a computer" demo is probably saturated/fading, but it seems like gaming is still pretty healthy and despite twenty years of effort there's still no real competitor to Windows there. Nearly every "innovation" by Microsoft in the OS space has kind of made it worse for us anyway.

The big coup which this article doesn't really talk about was, imo, was when Apple got their ecosystem in. Tons of people think Apple is the UberBlack gateway to the internet. They had a chance to tap into the video game stream but they shied away from hardware solutions as usual and the Mac game situation remains pretty dire even on year 40.

After reading about everything, no strong feelings about Price (she's obviously slightly toxic although that seems pretty par for the course on twitter? And she's clearly being brigaded against), but I'm always surprised by how many people support corporations when it comes to gaming.

No, but perhaps they should? I pay 70 bucks a month to use ~ 700 Gigs or so. The cost of them delivering that 700 Gigs is literally 0.7 dollars. So how about AT&T kicks in 20 bucks to a content provider pool?

This is an interesting idea, kind of like the way Prime memberships float the Twitch boat a little bit, although I doubt the current ISPs could pull it off well.

I'll be the devil's advocate here even though I think ads are often poorly implemented.

To start with, paying for your ISP is not paying for content. They don't really have anything to do with each other.

Regarding how sites will make money, I think if you ask a person to steal or starve, they will steal. The paywall doesn't really work, the newspapers, which unquestionably have the best actual content worth paying for, continue to shrink despite growing online audiences.

Let talk about Patreon type models. I'm getting most of my conclusions from here(https://theoutline.com/post/2571/no-one-makes-a-living-on-patreon?zd=1&zi=454z6mjs), if you want to read more. We know that most people make jack shit from Spotify and Youtube payouts (2 million views is worth $1k apparently), so maybe directly sourced bespoke content from farm to patreon table is a better proposition? According the stats, 1400 people make above minimum wage on Patreon ($14k a year). In contrast, according to google the newspaper industry employs about 200,000 who make on average $85k.

One successful model is to BE Reddit, Google, Yelp, spotify or Netflix, direct IV content with relatively little intrusion, BUT they leverage hundreds of millions of subscribers and views to do that. These sites are the Walmarts of content.

How does anything smaller survive? Look at Dark Horizons (a good movie news site linked here on occasion). They have that awful video overlay ad on every page if you surf unblocked (I really really hate this). But no one would pay for movie news aggregation. Your remaining choices are navigating the totally fucked Kinja type UIs on yahoo movies or AV Club, if something happened a day ago good luck finding it. Taking yourself out of the equation, what does horizons guy do in this situation, choose to fold or inject clockwork orange style ad sprays?

So Conan Exiles - a game designed for groups of people to explore, build castles, fight their enemies and survive the dangers of the world - is a shit single player experience.

Huh... who would have thought.

His videos were fun and refreshing when they were new, now they're just old, tired, and stale. I can watch 5 of them and laugh once.

I think he has good points here and there but also a lot of hot takes for the sake of it, mixed in with casual spoilers because he wants the clown on the ending or something. It's not very good as a review, I usually only watch them after I played the game or if I'm not interested.

Had a friend who tilted into a similar mental illness. Just a normal (if ever so slightly off) dude with his head on his shoulders. It started out very subtly and I just thought he was confused. Then he started evolving these weird conspiracy theories. Not close enough to drag him to a doctor, so I just had to stop engaging with him when he went off the deep end. Felt very powerless but he did get help from the family eventually.

It's interesting how when we lose our bearings we descend into a sort of pure self centered narcissism in our understanding of the world, like that's whats really underneath our psyche. Some belief everything rotates around us that we have to struggle to deny.

Some version of Fortnight works on phones right? You just need to have virtual buttons (not preferable to a controller usually but hey).

For my part, I think its funny that the PC is endrunning the overrippened mobile market. The gold rushers had almost a decade to make compelling new genres and control schemes but they settled on gatcha lootbox bullshit, click the food pellet stuff. Most of the well made games still feel like the Flash games of Newsgrounds days, always slightly janky. Only a few seemed to fit well (Monument Valley, the Sorcery's). Seems like there's nothing new coming, why not just run FTL on your phone?

The only one here I'd grab is Tales from Borderlands (is it the full game or just one episode?) Unfamiliar with the rest, so if anyone can vouch, feel free.

Last month I grabbed Superhot, which had been on my wishlist for a while but never seemed priced low enough.
Frankly, I am very uncertain I'll ever play any of these, especially since they aren't via Steam.

Shadow Tactics from last month is supposed to be great. Also this month I see lots of people raving about Steam World Dig 2. I heard mixed things but I'm curious about Tokyo42, probably annoying to play but has an interesting aesthetic.

This is all hearsay though, I'm still working on humble bundle games from 2014 in the que.
