Wasn't this the same Dev house that said something along the lines of "We don't understand why people liked Deus Ex 1, it was too slow", and then a few weeks later said "This game is totally going to be a spiritual successor to Deus Ex 1"?

Sigh.

Because they didn't license squat. They bought. It's theirs. They could replace Fallout Boy with a pink jelly doughnut with legs, turn the Brotherhood of Steel into a gay tap-dancing street gang, and turn the gameplay into a Tetris-like puzzle game if they wanted to. They are beholden to no one.

Sorry, Madguy, but I *have* run into DRM limits on games. I've hit activation limits, I have had to jump through hoops to activate on a computer not normally connected to the internet, and I've had false-positive DRM issues with over-zealous or poorly-coded DRM, Fallout 3 most recently. Basically I've had most of the major "what ifs", except of course for a company going out of business.

And to be honest, why is that so hard to believe? How many companies have been in dire straits lately? We've seen MMOs close down months after release. Sure Atari seems like a safe-ish bet, but lets not forget Atari itself isn't really the Atari we all remember. Things happen. And the "We'll release a patch" thing only works if you can find the patch later... Having recently spent way, way, way too much time trying to find the last patch for Rocket Jockey, I can assure this isn't always easy for older games.

And I'm not even going to get into the "there are worse things" fallacy, someone else already called you on that one.

@14

Actually, Bethesda pretty much bought Fallout lock, stock, and barrel. Interplay was just granted a couple of limited licenses... permission to republish the old games, permission to develop an MMO if certain conditions were met, that's about it. And actually I think even if Interplay published the MMO, Bethesda was entitled to a certain percentage of profits. It's Bethesda's baby now.

*edit* Bah, you corrected yourself while I was correcting you.

I'm somewhat intrigued by this game, and I really wanna be excited, given how badly Maxis betrayed me with their most recent Sim City game... If you even can really call it a legit entry in the franchise. But all I ever see of screen shots of this game is gorgeous ski-hills and far-out panoramas of cities. Very little indication of what the interface/game play is like from the screen shots.

But in fairness, Beth has no MMO track record, yet they've been gearing up recently to start making them. It's possible they have some new ideas to bring to market.

Idealistic dreaming, probably, but I can hope.

Don't kid yourself. There's no such thing as a "legit" reason to pirate something, except *maybe* if you've purchased the game and lost or damaged the original media.

That said, it's a very good reason to not purchase the game in the first few weeks. Let their release-sales suffer a bit, pick it up at the first mark-down if the reviews say it's any good.

Thirdly pirates don't even use Activation Keys they bypass them, so they are lying about the 50k attempts on one number or it's one of the 90% they claim don't need more than 3 installs.

Successful pirates, you mean. Much like everywhere else, the vast majority of people are barely competent to draw breath, much less acomplish whatever task they have set out to do.

How many times do you see crap like "i trd 2 activate this program and it said i wasnt authrorised! doesn't work!" to every time you see "Followed the instructions in the readme and it worked flawlessly! Thanks!".

Yeah. I think we both know the answer to that one.

You know the sad part is, as a PC user, I've lately gotten so used to this type of treatment that I initially just brushed this aside. But damnit, we used to be the lucky ones. We got to laugh at console users because we could download demos for our games rather thank forking over 50 bucks sight-unseen, or even paying 5 bucks to rent it. And ok, I'm happy for our control-pad using brethren that they can now enjoy demos, but now we're getting the short end of the stick, rarely getting demos, and we've never been able to rent our games, short of what scant few eventually make their way to things like Gametap.

And then when we DO get a demo, sometimes it's like six months or more after the game is in retail - often times after the game has already been marked down one or twice and is on it's way to the discount bin.

Yeah, I'm actually really feeling a "fuck you" comming on to the PC industry in general, and I'm normally a very nice, easy-going sort of guy.

The existence of revoke-tools isn't much of a mitigating factor either. Most likely I will either forget to use it, or not be in a position to.

This. If windows gets corrupt / hard drive fails / whatever, I'm not going to be in a position to revoke an auth. If I'm just doing a periodic wipe and restore, I've already got so many things that are way, way more important to remember to back up... and even then I tend to forget one or two things. I've burned more iTunes auths that way, and their revoke tool is built in and simple to use.

Thankfully iTunes is very forgiving about keys. (5 a year, IIRC... I've never bumped into the limit, at any rate, in something like 6-7 years of using it.) But 3-5, ever? No thanks. Theres an idea, guys... If you gotta include activation limits, why make your customers beg for them? Just give them more on a periodic basis.

So, if I'm reading this right, you press a button at your house, your command is transmitted to the server - with the 50-250ms delay that entails... then the action is played out on their server, recorded, compressed, and sent back to you, again with the delays?

Yeah, I can't see that working, ever, for anything more complex than... say... Bejeweled.

Maybe I'll be wrong!

But I doubt it.

So if I own a company and some other rich company says "hey I want phaints company, i'm going to buy it, I don't care if it is for sale or not" they can do that?

If you're a publicly traded company, which is to say if you have stock floating around to be bought, yes. But it's not a question of "is it for sale or not"... By being a publicly traded company, you are in essence up for sale.

While I have no desire to purchase yet another one of these atrocities of a game (Nice to know the graphics are mostly unchanged, still, after all these years. Consistency!), I do applaud any developer willing to shun draconian DRM. Of course, I'd applaud more if they shunned DRM altogether.

That said, ByteShield will only be "nigh uncrackable" so long as it is relatively obscure. If it were to start being used on AAA titles, I wouldn't put any money on it.

This is the man who thinks that the sole reason Crysis was a flop was that everyone pirated the game, and hence PC games are dead.

It has nothing to do, in this man's mind, with the fact that the game was boring, or that only one gamer in 10 could run it anything approaching respectable settings, or that multiplayer was a dead-end prospect from day one, or that virtually their entire marketing plan for the game was to brag about how it would rape your system and you might as well not even bother playing even if you only bought the system yesterday. The absolute only reason Crysis was not a smash hit was we all stole it.

Well, I guess not the absolute only reason. In Europe, we also have "European gamers don't like violence".

Of course, SOME will limit themselves to that 13%, then blame piracy for the fact that their sales are in the crapper.

There is nothing wrong with non-intrusive copy protection... which has nothing to do with SecuROM in the slightest, so why did you bring it up?
