I think he's actually right this time because he used math instead of a crystal ball. Sony's hardware woes come from a little company in south Asia called Samsung. So do a lot of electronic companies competition. If anything, PS3 is going to be helping Sony from losses in other markets.

I see you are still flaming instead of anything else, regardless of the alias.

Wow that's some pretty desperate mudslinging from the MS camp.

Take some time away from apologizing for things like Prototype and read this:

http://ps3.qj.net/Pachter-31-of-worldwide-software-sales-will-be-PlayStation-s/pg/49/aid/132608

Notice the 200%+ jump in software sales for Sony from 2007 to end of 2008? It's over, Sony is looking at Nintendo now, who cares about Xbox... They are running on fumes and budget games they are charging full price for, and ramping up advertising while trying to pick fights with Sony as they get passed up trying to express some sort of "being on equal terms" to the world.

As for Activision, I think the Sony response of a polite "f*ck off, we don't need you" was more than adequate in response. Activision would lose a serious amount of money per quarter if they actually did something like that, so much so I doubt we would ever have to hear that CEO ever open his mouth again.

Finished it. 10 hours recorded time elapsed (37% campaign hit percentage) but that doesn't count the 4-6 hours or restarting at a checkpoint. There's some cheese at the end as well. I warmed up to the game at the end but it's still about a 7/10 for me.

I am almost done with the game and there are 2 open world areas with 3 side missions each. It made me wish the whole game was like this! Wall

It's been fun since the civil war part. It's odd, that civil war part of the game feels alien and like something totally different, like someone else designed it, and it just doesn't fit with how the rest of the game plays, looks, and feels.

The downside to the game is that I really don't like any of the characters that much. Thomas a little bit I guess because he's so honest. But didn't anyone learn from Kane and Lynch:Dead Men? I don't care about them and the story suffers because it's just a bunch of thugs talking about whatever they want to talk about. Don't get me started on the whimpy third brother who is a worthless addition. I love Deadwood and Ian McShane (not sure if that is him but it sure does sound like him doing the voice of Ray). But the whole group of guys is missing any kind of real charm.

I picked it back up and got past all the annoying civil war areas. Now in to the traditional western stuff and starting to enjoy the game, although it is just a narrative shooting gallery like COD. I am playing PS3, so no quicksave, and playing hardest mode. Haven't had a freeze at all since the other post so I am thinking one particular fight had an issue (the 25+ soldiers guarding the house with a cannon).

Put the game down, too tedious to re-search all the items and junk between save points when you die. May play it at some point.

Some places really need a check point and don't have them. This game has locked up three times in two hours. When playing with your AI brother he proceeds at his own pace pretty much playing the game for you as you try and heal. The game asks you to search for secrets and scrounge around, but for the most part it keeps you on a hurried pace firmly on rails with penalties if you deviate too much, or at the wrong time. Another really annoying thing is that you occasionally will get hit while completely undeniably behind strong cover (like 3 foot thick trees or cement blocks).

Don't buy this expecting something as deep and content rich as "Gun" because it isn't here. I'd really rather play "Gun" over again than play COJ after struggling with it for 2 hours. Maybe after a patch it will be worth trying again. I want to get in the door, but it's firmly shut, and I am done knocking for now.

USA owned the first half, but Brazil completely dominated the second half. The final score should have been 4-2 anyway; the shot that went off the crossbar was in. Still, the last week has been one helluva showing from the USA team.

Yep, I agree totally on the gift goal. Brazil gets pissed off when it under achieves. I think the women are the scariest when they are behind actually lol. USA I think changed to turtle mode which irritates the hell out of the Brazilians but you have to count on strong counters to stay in the game and then of course you have to make having your whole team primarily play defense matter. USA didn't defend enough, and they didn't make the few counters they got count. I would have rather seen USA go toe to toe and play agressive the whole game instead of that, but oh well. US was tired at the end and played like it too. I think it had something to do with the Brazilians crossing the field every major first/second touch of a new drive. Made USA run 2x as much and by end of the game it showed.

Google shows 22 million, if you have different figures please feel free to show them.

So you admit to missing it by 2 million. Works for me, I don't care if you think it's 25 or not. That's thrice now you have given bad information.

So suddenly North America matters when you just said it didn't?

Hey, in your reality apparently quoting North American sales equals world wide totals. No offense son, I credited you with having a better sense of geography and accounting, sorry if I was mistaken.

I doubt you know much about the Cell processor given your general and vague statements about it.

I didn't realize my understanding of how a cell processor works was required to be happier with the PS3 and it's software. Is there something you don't understand about it or would like to ask? As for bus speeds, PS3 has an on paper peak bandwidth of 25.6 gigabytes per second (twice as fast as most high end home PC systems) utilizing a bus differential system. From cell to graphics a rate of about 35 gigabytes a second (about 8-10 times as fast as high end home PCs). Were you attempting to compare bus speeds between gaming rigs and the PS3?

Bottom line is the the software determines what is going to be worth owning, playing, and paying for. The PC has been hitting rock bottom for awhile. The hardware manufacturers need to pool some money and get a couple high end demo games similar to Red Faction coming out every year so that there is a reason to buy the big guns. Right now there isn't and the free market isn't really going to go that route anymore. They have learned middle of the road software sells more units. If it comes out on a console too, well that defeats the purpose... It needs to be PC only. So maybe Intel, memory companies, Nvidia, AMD, and some others will shell out and get part of their hardware industry a boost. Business is most likely going to stay rooted in WinXP with compatability kits used for 95 and earlier. Same with hardware, doubt much will be purchased for years to come. While the gamers are a small piece of the pie, so is the budget shared universally to make it happen. It all depends how important that market is to the majority. I'd say not much going by actions up until now.

It's a shame Billy didn't get to see USA smacking Brazil 2-0 at half time in the Fifa cup. I thought I would never in my life time ever see the USA team beat the world ranked #1 team then go on to the final and lay down the goals on a team like Brazil. No matter what happens the rest of this game, I still can't believe it. I think I will be getting the next EA Fifa game.

I just looked it up and there's 22 million PS3s, not 20 million as I originally said. Far fewer than you are alleging though.

There you go misrepresenting information again. I have made no claims to the total sales of the PS3 in this thread. I have claimed that you used North American sales figures to make claims that exclusive PS3 IP titles sold under a million world wide (which you did just as the Gamasutra opinion piece, masquerading as an investigative article apparently wants people to do). Now I will make claims to total sales, the PS3 is around 25 million in sales.

NetFlix is only in North America. Blu-Ray world wide is showing small adoption rates and retailers are complaining about problems moving inventory

It is Netflix, it is streaming, it is people not buying movies. I used to buy all kinds of DVDs, not anymore. I only buy stuff that I will watch multiple times. It doesn't matter anyways... The Amazon release list is exploding. Tons of new releases every week. Battlestar Galactica complete series on Blu-ray July 28th is one I have earmarked. I recently got season 1 of Star Trek original series and it was phenomenal. New hi res graphics, both new version and old untouched version of each episode and more bonus content than you could ever want.

There is nothing superior to the PC inside of a PS3, arguing that is pretty silly and pointless.

Well we can start with the obvious, unless you have a PC Blu-ray drive, I think thats clearly something inside a PS3 that is better. PS3 ram speed is over 3 ghz. Not many PCs can do 9 threads. The Cell processor is amazing regardless of what you may consider "better".

PC gaming is far from dead and shows tremendous growth in online sales

That's mainly from appliance PCs... Middle of the road PCs. Including free to play browser games on growth is hardly something I want to base owning a hot rod rig on. I don't desire to play them, and you probably don't either. It's certainly not going to sell hot rod rig inventory.

The consoles have all of those same problems

There are plenty of console titles that will convince me to spend 200-300 dollars on a console. There are no longer titles that will convice me to spend 600 on just a video card or huge ram upgrades, much less a full blown new operating system in the 200 dollar range. If that's the case, adding up the price of a new PC, there are just not enough unique titles out there, drm free or not, good enough to drop money on a high end gaming rig.

I also think it's pretty safe to say that a large portion of talented ex PC developers are now working on console games. I also think it's safe to say that a majority of quality titles this year and from here on out, will be on a console. You will be able to play ports on a PC with some of them. I prefer the original intended platform even if you do not.

I don't want it to be this way, after all I have built many high end rigs over the years, but from owning all the stuff and seeing what's coming, that's where the industry is heading. If I want to actually buy my games and own them, actually get new quality games in a volume that makes this hobby worth spending time in, I have to adopt console gaming. I also don't enjoy playing the same shooter every day on Steam anymore. Some people still do, more power to them.

With 20 million PS3 owners in the world and quite a few exclusives not even hitting the 1 million sales mark(a staple of this industry)

Thank you for proving my points. You just stated world wide figures using North American only data. You just got used by that Gamasutra article and turned in to a pawn of misinformation. inFAMOUS is only a month old too...

There are many games that don't install much of anything other than preference data and the games load fine. I am sorry if you feel threatened that another system has a superior piece of hardware that does make it favorable. Tearing it down won't change that.

Blue ray adoption is stunted by Netflix. Even I use it 16-20 BDs a month. Same stuff is happening to normal DVDs now too. When stuff like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings comes out, then you will see a better idea of who is using Blu-ray opposed to who is renting on Blu-ray.

The PC is a required appliance. Buying in to the high end gaming stuff is dead. It's over. You will see major hits to Apple, Microsoft, all the memory companies, motherboard companies, video card makers, etc.. It may be ressurected some day but the glory days of PC games, peripheral sales, high end rigs being more commion, it's done if things don't change (and I don't see it changing). Especially with devs making midline software to have a bigger footprint. There's just no need for it anymore. Not to mention the games that do come out PC exclusive for the most part are trashware. Console ports work better on... consoles... That leaves trashware and a few FPS/RTS/MMO/Browser choices that people will prefer on PC.

The PC can't do everything because it is suffering from major lack of quality software and it can't run many console exclusives if there isn't a PC version made available. Those big buzz titles just don't really exist anymore for the PC. Not like they used to. Getting a new Blizzard game every 10 years isn't enough, and they are designed for middle ranged PCs too. You can get away with buying a PC appliance rig and playing the exclusives without dumping real money in to it. I won't stake my gaming hobby on the PC anymore. Especially with limited activations, DRM, digital only releases, DUCk (downloaded unlocked content), and having to use Steam (or other gatekeeper companies). Just not a good deal for the end user.

I will gladly place PS3 against just about any Xbox equivalent cross platform game and be very confident the PS3 will do equivalent loads much faster. This was really, really evident with Oblivion and a few other HD intensive games I happen to own both copies of.

The Blu-ray drive is critical, especially long term. It's only year 3 of the console. Dev time for the best games take 2-3 years.

I have dumped about 3k in to Xbox and about 7k in to PS3 and I can honestly say I am going to be putting more in to PS3 and only getting true exclusive PC and Xbox content. I am more than pleased with PS3 on a modern big HDTV. I didn't "go to a friends house" and come to a conclusion a piece of hardware was lacking. I owned enough of all of them and drew conclusions based on years of use. If I were in to pirating, I would love the PC... But I buy my stuff and the PC game industry has failed the customer. Time to move on.

I agree the attach rate is low because people bought them as Blu-ray players for movies. Much like many Wii owners bought them for sports and a some sort of status symbol. But gamers are migrating to PS3 now that there is more of a reason to. Hopefully Sony learned some hard lessons this last couple of years.

The only modding I ever see myself doing is hardware fixes over time. Our PS3s are 3 years old and still doing fine. Just HD for now. Some day may need to do a BD or PSU. All of which can easily be done by anyone watching you tube and buying a part.

The article points out some interesting data but I note that it's rather skewed as well. To me it's a veiled attempt to make the PS3 look less attractive, the current MS strategy of apparently getting game media to take shots at the PS3 (I don't need people telling me how to think about what I already own). Using a North American sales chart is misleading in a sense that people reading at a glance will look at the chart and come to the conclusion that's all those titles ever sold, when in fact they are just North America. While the text may say that (we can call that fine print for the gamer glancing in a hurry) the chart catches the eye with the bright colors and delivers a misleading statement that these titles only sold these numbers, then ending with "was it worth it?" as if PS3 is now doomed.

The comment sections are in fact more intelligent than the original article. I like the one that simply says, "Very, very, very long marketing strategy". I also like the other one that says they would have never bought the PS3 without all the new, ground breaking, innovative new IP that is only possible on PS3. I tend to count myself in that bracket as well. inFAMOUS is one of my favorite games in YEARS not just this year. It was one of those rare things that happen in this hobby, perfect fullfilment. Uncharted was great. Motorstorm is great (2 ok). The first Resistance was awesone, the second was ok. So the main question I have to assume after the heavy dooming spin on this written opinion is "Was it worth it to have these killer titles or would I have prefered another Jax, Sly, some racer, and some other rehashed crap?" I think it's very clear I would rather have what Sony chose to make. These games are top notch IP, and they aren't ever leaving Sony, and they still have the other sequal IP too. I agree with the very, very, very long marketing strategy.

Short term, very satisfied with what my PS3 does for me and my family with ANY hardware I could possibly want already bought and sitting right here.

Motorstorm 1 was better than 2. But, and this is probably a big but, they are really putting forth the effort to make 2 a lot better. I have been grabbing all the free PSN stuff for it waiting on the adrenaline pack and they have patched it some, so will probably go check it out again.

I get the feeling they are trying to spend some time like Criterion did with Paradise City. I really wasn't all that impressed with Burnout until I got some of the DLC (and got over them not having crash mode, traffic attack, etc...). So I am hoping Motorstorm 2 is getting some of that treatment.

More PS3 only stuff...

Little Big Planet is not for everyone. You have to like Tinker Toys, Erector sets, Lincoln Logs, Legos etc.. hehe. And then it's building platformer levels.

Ratchet and Clank, is actually a good game.

Valkyria Chronicles, if you like turn based shooters (like Jagged Alliance) is a must get. It's WWII with a veneer of jrpg, but it's a good game.

Lair was a pretty amazing game that was screwed up by sixxas. If you get good at it, still lots of fun. You can download a patch that allows for using the sticks instead.

Disgaea 3 is one of my favorite puzzle rpg games. The total randomness of it makes for excellent replayability and I like developing characters. They are presently pumping that game for DLC money like crazy. You don't really need any of it unless one gives you more classroom space.

Resident Evil 5 is good if you like old fashion survival horror. It's not run and gun like L4D.

Cross Edge (coming to 360 eventually) is really bad fan service. 5 jrpg companies bringing beloved characters from all kinds of jrpgs in a common adventure. It's a great idea, but the dialog is unbearable. The story pretty nonexistent. It's just bad. The game has poor control and design decisions. It's still decent to play, you just got to tolerate a lot. I would advise most to stay far away from it.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma - 2 thumbs up, very hard game but you can lower skill level by taking an ego hit lol.

Dark Kingdoms - I liked this game a lot, reminded me of Dark Alliance PS2 games and a heck of a lot nicer looking.

Warhawk - Pretty much a must own if you like online battlefield type games on a console. UT3 (15 bucks now days) is actually pretty impressive on a PS3.

Pixeljunk Monsters is one of my favorite tower defense games (Comet Crash is also really good, the moon one a distant 3rd). They also make one called Eden a lot of people like. I played it some but get bored with it. There's a bunch of downloadable stuff that's pretty subjective but unique. Looking forward to Pixeljunk Shooter and Dungeons.

Eye of Judgement was a big hit for me. Have to ebay to find the older card sets to get in to this. Shame they aren't pushing this game more.

There's more stuff out there from the early days and some more I am probably forgetting but that's most the unique stuff pretty much with lots more on the way of course. I have been replaying Uncharted lately. That game just has such great character chemistry and dialog. It's pretty much a modern Indiana Jones. Thus why they are now making a movie. Still impressed Uncharted 2 got best of E3 in a couple of catagories in that recent press poll. I am really looking forward to it.

EDIT: Metal Gear Solid 4 is a good one as well. High Stakes Poker is the best poker game ever because of one particular feature which I will leave nameless. Zen Pinball is pretty good if you like those kind of games. Tekken 5 is a full blown disc game (DLC) if you like fighting games. There's more but those came to mind after posting this.

Buy some games and own it longer than a day before saying that only Resistance stuff was good?

Try theese out...

inFAMOUS
Uncharted
Killzone 2
Motorstorm 1&2
Super Stardust HD
Heavenly Sword

There are more but you just got it so start with these.

Not sure why the hate on the blu-ray drive... The discs can hold 50gig and play 1080p movies. It's essential to getting the amazing look of PS3 games like Killzone 2. You will be glad it's there when God of War 3 hits. I would not want to own the Xbox version of FFXIII... Most likely the PS3 will be 1 disc, Xbox 3-4 discs and knowing how they want to copy protect, you will still have to swap the discs even if you install all of it on the disc drive like in TLR and Star Ocean. That blu-ray drive gives room for special PS3 enhanced games even if cross platform. Red Alert 3 has tons of 1080p material on the disc (hours and hours) as well as the main games cinematics being 1080p blu ray quality. Force Unleased, Red Faction, and a few others did some special enhancements too. We have seen Protoype's comparison but that was more along the lines of using the cell power to create better shadows. Give it a chance you will be glad you have that drive in the long run.

Get a 500gig HD and don't sweat the cache installs. It speeds stuff up big time without having to do full installs. It's easy, 5 screws... Just be careful not to strip those screws (if you do call Sony, It's common knowledge they replace the 5 screws and the caddy free).

50 and digital only with activation limit DRM? LOL! Uh yeah, see ya. Shame too, love Blood Bowl.

Maybe Aspyr will grab a hold of this when they barely sell anything due to being niche, under advertised, hard to find for even those interested, and DRM'd.

Sad couple of days indeed, with more ahead of us for sure...

@PHJF - I played O2 for about 5 hours. It's more of the same but there are differences... It feels like Fable 2 more than ever. The lil runts don't always break everything when you use sweeping. You can't ransack homes anymore. The whole thing has a different feel that just doesn't fit the first one. It's not bad, just think the first one was better... That may be because the humor of this one is lacking or lame, and the surprise and freshness has worn off. Load screens are long, and plentiful. I got to the second area and it had me running around in a giant ship, rowing manually. It had me doing it so much I put the game down. I am not blown away by this game at all. It's not horrible, just a let down in some ways.

One of my sons was a huge fan of 3 also. We were both bitching about how they changed the controls from 3 to 4. Pretty much ragging on it. He's been playing that while Ihave been playing other stuff. Well, basically a day or two in time. Now my son's been praising FN4 and absolutely loves everything about it. Said the controls, once learned, are more fun and intuitive than how 3 did it. So you might want to go for it if you liked 3. It's got some of the boxing greats in it, and the graphics are pretty amazing too.
