Well, Doom is just the game that invented multiplayer ;-)
First connecting via serial cable, afterwords a bunch of people meeting with some friend working for Infineon, who brought some of those strange network cards we put into our PCs 4 AM in the morning all finally connected. So fired up Doom - all players in the same virtual space - how cool is that! John Carmack invented this multiplayer thing.

You are right, the issue is gone now.
Jepp, me too. I am using that 174.16 Forceware driver (meant for 9600 GT only) on my Geforce 8800 GT, which might be related to the problem.
