The GSC forums are still holding out beyond reasonable hope that this is some sort of fiscal year quarter or a website mistake by bitComposer, even if they are the publisher.

Most LCDs (non-widescreen) are native 1280x1024.

Oh I know. I'm just saying you don't have to go widescreen to upgrade from that and be able to play games with your old video card.

Yuck, 1280x1024 is a wonky 5:4 resolution. At least upgrade to 1600x1200, folks. I've been stalling on widescreen as well due to my backlog but at least it's a resolution that looks good.

Am I the only one who wasn't overly impressed with the Stalker series?

Yeah.. this is actually a rare case. 99% of people either loved it or hated it for its bugs and flaws and design. I can't think of anyone that played it all the way through and had a "meh" response.

Does not fix that issue. Just how the game was designed, similar to others like Arcanum. It worked great other than that but I decided to just leave it at 800x600, which looked much better when I changed renderers.

Some indie devs do this (Mount & Blade, Cortex Command) and provide a pre-release at a discount. Except they don't provide any return on investment. Not sure if there's really much to go around.

Since I have money I'd be more than happy to jump on board but indie devs also need to show some maturity and try to get a release out in less than 5 years. More because I wouldn't want to get hyped up about something that early, rather than the money aspect of it.

Honestly I only know indiegames.com/blog and tigsource.com. RockPaperShotgun scoops a few too. If you want to really be on the cutting edge you can check the tigsource forums, but again I don't recognize these names so I must be missing something.

Wow, more Quake and Doom rehashes. How original. Yawn. I wonder if id is ever going to hire some real game designers or just keep putting out "tech demos"

This is kind of a 5 year old flame. id hasn't actually released anything since Doom 3. They've just farmed out to other developers for mediocre shooters (which aren't tech demos anymore). This is apparently going to change now since they are going to higher some real designers in house.

Too bad (for me!) they are focusing on the iPhone and there doesn't seem to be a lot of standards in regular cell phone games. I wanted to grab Doom RPG but it's not available for my phone. What is this, the 80s?

The UFO games are going to have to be your call. I've only played the demos but they all seem like competent squad tactical games, but nowhere near XCOM. They all have the ugly bland 3D graphics we know and love from earlier this decade. I believe some of the older games have a couple of good unofficial mega patches that may not have carried over to the latest, so that's at least some reason to go for the pack rather than getting the latest one used or something.

Also, I was going to jump on Fantasy Wars (or get it from Newegg for the same price) but then I realized I just slogged through King's Bounty and would probably kill myself if I had to play another hex-based unit level fantasy strategy game.
