Wow, that MySQL optimisation article started badly and then went downhill from there. If you're using a single-core virtual server/cloud with mostly static read-only content then maybe their recommendations are better than not tuning your database at all... but not by much.

For about 5 minutes I was unable to get to page four because the server kept throwing a database error Rotfl

Not only that, but I stopped reading on page 1 where it says you may want to switch from InnoDB to MyISAM because InnoDB uses more processing power. Years ago there were reasons to pick MyISAM over InnoDB. Today there really isn't as InnoDB has been greatly optimized and continues to be the storage engine of choice for the majority of installations out there. In addition, Oracle has switched their default storage engine to InnoDB and is discontinuing any real dev efforts on MyISAM. If the stock MySQL isn't cutting it for you, try Percona Server.

Yeah, sounds like he's pretty protective of his IP. Hard not to fault the studios though after blowing mega cash on both Watchmen and John Carter (looks like Oz will at least break even). I'd go see a Bioshock movie in the theater, but I'm not sure I'm the key demographic. It's not a huge name. I think a Mass Effect movie would have more of a built in audience and name awareness.

Still, I think you could have done Bioshock for $80m with the right director, especially given that most of it takes place indoors. Hunger Games cost that much. District 9 only cost $30 mil to make (and Neil would make a great Bioshock director).

For the record, I think Watchmen is an amazing movie, and I saw it in the theaters (I only go a few times a year).

I didn't know money was lost on Watchmen. I personally liked the movie very much.

oh boy, the mcdonalds of video games is coming out with a new flavor of milkshake!!! rejoice peasants!

Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, that's a straw, you see? You watching?. And my straw reaches acroooooooss the room, and starts to drink your milkshake... I... drink... your... milkshake!

(P.S. Calling WoW the McDonalds of video games is ignorant. It was an excellent bit of software engineering when it was released and they have managed to captivate audiences year after year. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. Though I haven't played it in some time I still respect what they have built.)

I have a problem, because I'd much rather see it go into improving or expanding minecraft. Maybe doing minecraft 2. He's got his own company, why not re-invest more into that?
The community already did expand Minecraft much further than I think Mojang ever would have. It's called Feed the Beast, and it's definitely not for everyone. Minecraft is bottled lightning and heaping more stuff onto it wouldn't necessarily improve it.

Mojang is not feeling the burning need to turn their success into a big corporate games-making machine, and whether people like their games or not, that's a rare thing. They *are* working on two games, but they're obviously super-intent on doing things their way. Throwing money at the solutions that Mojang is looking for... won't really fix those problems.

It's like suggesting that money is the only thing Valve needed to make Half-Life 3. Well, Valve could spend ungodly amounts of money on that game if they wanted to; maybe they've already done that and found it's not solving their development problems. This isn't the kind of business where loads of capital necessarily make a great game, especially when we're talking about indie games. There's an element of finesse to some kinds of game development that brute force wads of cash won't make happen.

Yea, but Notch the shyster got rich off of the game and the community didn't.

The arguments of I do/don't wear watches will need to be re-evaluated when this is released as it's not just a time piece.

If you wear a watch today, do you want to spend X hundred dollars for the new functionality of this device?

If you don't wear a watch today, is the functionality of this device valuable/interesting enough for you to become a watch wearer?

I am personally not very interested in this unless it can do things that my cell phone cannot which seems unlikely.

Here is the salary chart. Decide for yourself. Glassdoor is known for being slightly above the reality when it comes to large corporations and slightly below the reality with smaller companies, so don't take this info as fact. More like ballpark numbers.

I don't think it's the salaries necessarily, but the hours. If you make the guys work 60-70 hours per week with no OT, then a 100K salary is only 66K, and you're saving all that money not having to hire x number more people at 100K per year.

Sure - long development hours on a salary can suck but that is not unique to this company at all. That is the norm in the business - even for enterprise software development.

Record operating margins? We're slave driving like never before!

"I would like to thank our incredibly talented employees around the world for their passion, drive and creativity, which continues to fuel our success."

They have his thanks but not his money.

You know both of these things for a fact or you're just spewing jealous venom?

Why would I be jealous of working for someone like Kodick? Are you fucking high?

You know how you increase operating margins? You lower costs. You know where most of your costs are? Employees. And how do you do that? Worker them harder and pay them less. Recessions are a dream economy for guys like Kodick knowing they have their employees by the balls.

Why do you think they fired IW? They knew they could get other people to do it for a 1/4 of what they were paying them.

Am I jealous of that? Dude, take a fucking reality pill. Unless you mean am I jealous of Kodick and making monster bank like he does? No, I'm not. I could have easily been a broker or a banker - it runs in the family - but I have a conscience and I don't like fucking other people over so I can profit solely for myself. So really, either way, no not jealous in the least. What I feel for the rank and file at Actiblizz is pity.

You basically bashed them for slave driving and not paying employees appropriately. What I am asking for is the proof that this is happening today. Feel free to cite your sources when you're done un-bunching your panties from your last response.

I'm interested to know what their next MMO will be like. Say what you will about WoW, it is still the best released MMO today (even though it can't hold my attention anymore). EoS might trump it, but that's a ways off.

Does anyone else find the MM notation bizarre? Maybe it's a British thing (not that I'm the only Brit here) but that looks like millimetres to me. I know it meant million way back but I think the only people to use it now, aside from Blue, are people working in print media and that's hardly applicable here.

They're just taking the word "Million" and then removing all of the letters except for the M's.

Grossly lowballing the estimate.

what? 18 mil is "grossly lowballing" a game dev cycle? dont think so

maybe if you include advertising.. but i wouldnt consider that part of the deal, if its privately funded to begin with

18 mil is easily a AAA dev budget if you dont include marketing

Nah I think he meant Cutter was lowballing it with the 3mil figure because you don't ship a sequel to Pyschonauts on anything less than 10mil IMHO.

Right-o.
