From reading some of the angry posts, it looks like the majority are having exactly the same installation issues which plagued Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. The game is downloaded through Microsoft's servers, and the methods the installer uses to download the files feels a lot like downloading a Windows update, but this one's 50gb in size. It's hard to tell what's gone wrong in the background when a download won't start or the installer gets stuck halfway through.
2020 launch player here, you're right on the money. Asobo learned nothing from the 2020 launch as this is exactly the same thing that happened back then, unusual is the fact that this being a Microsoft published game, you would think that they would leverage Azure services to ensure a smooth launch as they literally own that platform.
Or, y'know, just let Steam handle the PC side of downloads like every other game instead of having a 30 meg stub launcher that downloads the game by connecting to a BBS running on a 33.6k baud modem.
