I always love how this is literally the only site where I see anyone talk about baseball. Basically zero discussion on any of my other gaming hideouts, in stark contrast to what happens as we come up on the NFL playoffs.

The baseball strike when I was growing up just murdered my interest in the sport, same with most of my friends back then. It was a long one and after that we had already moved onto other sports. I find the sport itself is pretty boring to watch, more fun to play.

I played football and baseball in my school days and I always enjoyed baseball more. But yeah I stopped watching around the same time you did. 1994? 1995? Something like that. I watched the occasional Mariners game up until Griffey and A-Rod left in ~2000.

#1 thing the sheeple should ask themselves when horrific things occur: Who benefits?

I've benefitted from a whole lot of things in my life that I had nothing to do with. The world is full of opportunists. It doesn't mean they created every opportunity. If you want anyone to listen, you need actual evidence that holds up to scrutiny.

Amazon wants to do a lot of shit with drones without considering the laws of physics.

What law of physics prevents them from giving people a little charge to get them to the next charging station? Is it the same law of physics that prevents you from jump starting another persons car with your battery?

Probably the same law of physics that makes my battery heavy as shit?

You can get retail consumer-tier quadcopters that can carry a payload of like 50 lbs. I'm sure if you're Amazon you can probably afford ones even stronger.

Exactly what Cutter said. I wonder why some are so conservative in their fear of believing conspiracies,

It's not a "fear of believing in conspiracies." It's placing a value on reasoning and evidence over wild speculation.

Did NeoGAF even have any users left anyway? Pretty sure they banned everyone for having wrong opinions.

That place was a great example of what happens when you do extreme moderation with no checks and balances on your moderators. You just had a bunch of really angry individuals going around banning literally anyone they didn't like.

any article on hate groups that fails to mention anti-white, anti-asian, anti-christian, anti-police is not worth 10s of your time.

It probably doesn't mention them because they make up like 0.01% of the hate groups on Steam, and thus is not a problem of the same scale. The article would be mighty long if they listed every possible anti-everything group.

For me, I've never found any of the JFK conspiracy theories particularly compelling. They have the same glaring holes that every conspiracy theory seems to have.

Conspiracy theories all make the mistake when inventing a new scenario to explain inconsistencies in the mainstream viewpoint. Any scenario you come up with has to explain those inconsistencies AND explain all the same stuff that the main theory already covered. But instead, you end up with something that purports to explain the inconsistencies, but is actually less convincing at explaining all the other mundane stuff. You end up with a theory that is actually a worse match for the available evidence.

Mr. Tact wrote on Oct 21, 2017, 15:17:
it is difficult to give a lot of credence to someone who also believes in telepathy, that extra-terrestrial aliens have visited Earth, and 9/11 conspiracies.

You'll be hard pressed to find other kinds of conspiracy theorists. People who fall into that trap are doing so because of faulty reasoning, not because a particular conspiracy has more evidence than another. They tend to believe a whole slew of shitty theories.

For example, the authors of this study report that “a belief that a rogue cell of MI6 was responsible
for [Princess] Diana’s death was correlated with belief in theories that HIV was created in a laboratory, that the moon landing was a hoax, and that governments are covering up the existence of aliens.” The effect continues even when the conspiracies contradict one another. For example, the more participants believed that Diana faked her own death, the more they believed that she was murdered.

Not much value in those types of sites anymore. People just go to YouTube for content and places like reddit (or Blues!) for news and discussion.

Many of these sites have the problem of being staffed primarily by people with very little interest in video games. They are people looking to get their foot in the door in journalism, and gaming websites have a very, very low bar on who they will hire.

Why go to some website to get a political lecture on why video games are all problematic when you can just go on YouTube, load up the channel of someone who has the same taste in games as you, and get their much more relevant opinion?

I dream of the day there's something to keep cheaters out of PC games. It's the biggest drawback PC has versus consoles these days. The ease with which you can cheat just makes it so much worse.
And how would hat work? The PC is an open platform. If you want something like that you need a closed platform.
I rather have cheaters than a closed platform.

I dunno. It would just be nice to have something. I don't see myself playing many multiplayer games on PC in the future, the number of cheaters has just gotten unbearable in all but the most popular or aggressively policed titles.

Try playing GTA Online on PC in a public session. See how many minutes before some motherfucker blows up everyone in the lobby with a single keypress on his mod menu, or someone puts everyone in a blackscreen loop, or whatever other nightmare.

Or even something as simple as optional leaderboards in mostly or entirely single-player games. Want to see how you are doing compared to others? Good luck, the first 50 pages are filled with people who have MAX_INT number of kills or completed the race in 0.01seconds.

People won't be buying these things, corporations will. Most people don't need a car, they need a ride. Even if you commute an hour each way to work, how long is the car sitting unused for in your day?

It's a lot of wasted economic opportunity in a car just sitting somewhere for hours on end. But the roads being full of fleets of on-demand cars, some available for private rides and some available for cheaper, smartly-routed shared rides (e.g., a much more effective version of Uber Share, since a router sends automated cars rather than whichever driver is near and clicks first) makes sense. Each car is being used much, much, much more often, and people make many small purchases instead of one large one. No maintenance, no worries, and you pay less over time.

Outside of truly rural areas, this is more or less where we'll be. And soon. Europe likely sooner.

Honestly I don't really see the use pattern changing much. Places where people tend to take public transportation, they will end up on automated public transportation. Places where people tend to drive their own cars, they'll have their own automated cars.

Automation will extend reasonable public transportation to somewhat less urban areas because of the cost savings on drivers, but it's not going to revolutionize suburbia into a place where you can get by without owning a car. For most people outside of the big cities it's still going to be the choice between a personal vehicle and being beholden to a bus schedule.
