The interesting thing is that it's being resisted by both Dem and Repub states. This is being architected by Chris Kobach of Kansas, and even Kansas is refusing to participate.

If I had to hazard a guess as to the motivations, I'd say that the Democrats are resisting because, obviously, they don't want to be seen as helping Trump's stupidity along. The Republicans are resisting because their voter base, despite often being Trump supporters, distrust the federal government and wouldn't take kindly to them handing over their personal info. Plus they just don't have anything to gain from compliance.

Uh, what? The GOP controls most of the state legislatures, right? The GOP vice chair of the commission, who is the Kansas Secretary of State, is among those saying he won't give up all the information requested. Of course he then claimed the commission wasn't requesting the information he couldn't, by law, provide. Too bad they had already sent out the letters saying otherwise.

But you notice how all his comments treat US politics like its some kind of sports game and not actual life and death for some people? That's precisely the reason that Trump could shoot a reporter in the head during a live press briefing and still never go below 25% approval rating. All that matters is he has an (R) after his name, even if he's completely useless to implementing a Republican agenda.

Wait, are you saying there is a record of whom I voted for? That would be news to me. A record of which primaries and elections I did vote in, sure. But not who I voted for. So, they can't publicly condemn me for voting for or against candidate XYZ.

How are they going to use the information to suppress the vote? Again, not saying they can't, just looking to understand how they would, other than my previously mentioned support for voter id laws.

Whoever has that data probably isn't interested in giving it to Trump. We know the intelligence community doesn't trust him. Not really in their best interests to help him engage in voter suppression.

Exactly, well said. Why do stars fuse hydrogen into helium? There is no 'why'. It is what happens.

You really want to have your mind fucked read or listen to that book I linked to Kxmode about Something Rather Than Nothing. Lawrence Krauss does a fairly decent job of turning the origins of the universe into English. It's still pretty technical, and of course any English description of physics on that level is going to be a sloppy inaccurate approximation since you can really only understand it with math and an encyclopedic knowledge of the relevant standing theories.

Then you can get into Prof. Max Tegmark's multiverse theories...

The universe is weirder and more fantastical than anything described in a religious text, and that's with just what our ape brains have been able to figure out in the last couple centuries.

Here's another one I just remembered: If you want to feel lucky or special, get this... If we were around 2 trillion years later, we'd be unable to find out about the Big Bang or even that other galaxies exist. All the nearby galaxies will be merged into one super large galaxy. The other galaxies will be too far away moving too fast and their light will have red shifted beyond what you could measure with any instrument. And they won't even know what they are missing because they won't be able to measure the expansion of space to know that it is happening. All that any civilization around in +2T yrs will think is that their galaxy is the only one that exists.

Mr. Tact wrote on Jul 3, 2017, 21:35:
Dude! Everything we are, literally, comes from stellar nucleosynthesis and supernova nucleosynthesis. Stars are God! Okay, maybe not God -- but they are the only way any elements heavier than hydrogen and helium exist in our universe.

Technically the Big Bang produced some trace amounts of Lithium as well!

Right, it's been getting worse and worse for the Repubs: Alzheimer, B-Actor Ronald Reagan, idiot-savant "Fool me once" George W. Bush, now D.J. Trump. It's a linear downward progression in quality.

I'd put Dubya above Reagan. Well above Reagan actually, and probably by extension, above his dad. Dubya's main problem was his slimy yet cunning and competent underlings enriching themselves and their friends off pointless war.

Reagan on the other hand gave us an entire generation of people who think Reaganomics actually works. His administration was also much slimier than W's, but less competent. More scandals. Also his foreign policy with regards to Russia led to much of the instability in the Middle East today. Also don't forget refusing to acknowledge AIDS was a problem because it was what I imagine he thought was a dirty homo disease.

The conservative press has done a good job of scrubbing Reagan's reputation in the public eye, but he's one of the worst of the worst.

Kxmode wrote on Jul 3, 2017, 15:07:

Science is never going to be able to explain the WHY, only HOW. It can only discuss the effects, but never the cause. These are the big WHY questions Science keeps asking to this day that they have not been able to answer.

That's because there are no "why" questions that are answerable when it comes to the universe. Using the term "why" implies there is a reason or intent. All the "why" questions people ask in this area are actually just poorly worded "How" questions. Again, this is the "god of the gaps" argument that even theologians dislike. "Science can't explain it, therefore God." Suddenly God becomes a bubble of ignorance that gets smaller every year as we steal things from him.

Both Siegel and Kaku have reached their conclusions through exhaustive scientific research, and yet they have to present their evidence carefully because of what could happen. Many scientists never go that far since they fear to become pariahs.

They haven't reached a scientific conclusion. Even Kaku admits that science can't prove or disprove a god. They have personal opinions. They are allowed to have those, and not everything they say is gospel. That's the difference between science and faith. Everything in science is always up for a challenge. Nothing is ever a set-in-stone fact. Some theories are going to be nearly impossible to challenge because they've been thoroughly tested experimentally. Relativity is real and even has to be accounted for in commercial applications like GPS. Newton will still accurately describe what happens when you throw a ball in the air a billion years from now.

Things on the edge of physics are where you're going to see the most churn with regards to theories. For example, since we were talking about Michio Kaku, String Theory was the hot shit in the 80s and early 90s but recently hasn't fared too well and it's becoming less popular as a theory because it still hasn't produced any experimental evidence. Meanwhile the Standard Model is making a lot of progress. He'd be a fool if he was basing his belief in a god on, say, tachyons, which haven't even been proven to exist. Or even the larger string theory which may not even be a valid description of how the universe works. But he's not. He has personal opinions that are separate from the scientific method.

I just think you have a poor grasp of how science is done at that level. The best way to become rich and famous as a scientist isn't to toe the party line, it's to prove everyone else wrong. That's why we make so much scientific progress. Scientists don't hold on to gospel. The second something else looks like it's a more promising avenue of research, they tend to jump over there so they can be the first to publish. It would be impossible to suppress a theory in the way you describe in the scientific community.

EDIT: I also don't know why some religious folk want to find "proof" the universe was created. If we can scientifically show that the universe was created, then what? It doesn't tell us who created it, or why. None of the creation myths in religious text today make a damn lick of sense or map to what we know about the origins of the universe at all. So if we did find proof the universe was created, then it seems to me that we've found proof that people have been worshipping the wrong gods all along and not a single religion had it right.

Not only could, already have. They've been doing it a decade or more. It is how the GOP got control of the state legislatures which allowed them to redraw voting districts in a way beneficial to them after the 2010 census. The pain isn't likely to end any time soon.

Yep... it's very disappointing that so many people assumed that just because you can't gerrymander state borders that higher offices were immune to someone like Trump getting elected. The conventional wisdom that you have to target moderates/independents to win a statewide or national election just doesn't hold true anymore.

Creationism has literally no scientific basis, suppressed or otherwise.

Who said anything about Creationism? I said created reality. They are mutually exclusive. I do not believe in Creationism, and true Christianity does not teach or support the concept of "creationism." It is not compatible with the Bible's account of creation.

You said that scientific evidence was being suppressed. If you're talking about simulation hypothesis or just the general idea of the universe being created, then there is no evidence to suppress. Even calling it a hypothesis might be going too far. It's just an idea some people have floated.

And I'm not sure what you mean by "true Christianity." Don't all Christian and Islamic sects generally accept that the God of Abraham willed the universe into existence?

Creationism has literally no scientific basis, suppressed or otherwise. Many scientists are religious and if there was evidence, they'd follow it, just like any other scientist. Your first link is the classic "God of the gaps" argument, where anything that doesn't have an intuitive scientific explanation must therefore be God. Your second link is giving arguments for why advanced life could be rare, and plugging in overly pessimistic numbers into the Drake equation. That isn't evidence for creationism. Your third link is from Michio Kaku, and he's talking more about the simulation theory than anything approaching the Christian Mythology. It certainly isn't what the clickbait title suggests.

@Redeye: LOL.

Side note: I'm trying to think of who on the Dem side is equivalent to Trump, and would it ever be possible to elect that person.

Bernie Sanders had quite a populist following, and appealed to far-left Occupy types like Trump appealed to Tea Party people. Obviously he's is a very different person but I don't think Trump could have run as a Democrat even with an appropriate campaign. Too much baggage.

Who do AntiFa idiots typically want elected, Sanders? Even after he criticised them?

He could have run Dem if the Republicans had a strong front runner he wouldn't have been able to beat, but he wouldn't have gotten the nomination unless the Dems favored someone completely fucking stupid. Plus the DNC rigs the primaries anyway.

But yeah, Trump would have had a problem getting nominated as a Democrat because while he is certainly willing and able to pander and say what people want to hear, you can't fake not being a fucking orange, literally retarded, pussy grabber.

Only the right-wingers tolerate that kind of shit. They like his orangeness and shameless displays of (supposed) wealth. They like that he's a retard, it makes them feel less retarded and less condescended to. They like that he's a pussy grabber, because it makes them feel less bad for thinking of women the same way Trump does.

People on the left fall for pandering just like anyone else, but you have to at least put up the veneer of having some clue of what the fuck is going on in the world, and they are more critical of moral failings than the Religious Right, ironically.
