This is actually a pretty fun game from the open beta shit I played. I'm a bit backlogged at the moment or I'd buy it.

Also I dunno what what's his face was on about with the "naive buyers" shit when this is probably the most transparent launch we've seen in a long time. Literally no one should feel ambushed by the game they bought. All the information and even available hands-on play were available well before launch.

Seems like the writing portion of Andromeda must be winding down. Maybe we'll see some more concrete info on the game soon.

Because the photos were on a digital device and he used a digital device to photograph them, he's now facing felony computer crimes makes no sense.

Not true. Aggravated voyeurism is a felony in South Carolina and applies to the distribution of any unlawfully obtained photos, recordings, or files regardless of whether an electronic device is involved.

Stealing photos out of her purse and then distributing them would still be felony aggravated voyeurism in South Carolina.

We disagree on what it means for the phone to be unlocked, then. The door on a phone is the lock screen, it either opens to anyone who turns the knob or it requires a key in the form of a PIN, password, gesture, thumbprint, whatever. If the phone is left unlocked, that door has been left ajar.

A door left hanging open you can look inside without turning the knob. Hell, you can see whats going on without really forming the intent to look inside. A stray glance might be all you need to see something embarrassing. An unlocked phone still requires you to pick up the phone, turn the screen on, and then go digging if you want to see anything incriminating. It's not something you can do on accident.

Also important, you can't even know if the phone is locked until you've already grabbed it. Meaning the intent to access the phone precedes finding out that it's unlocked. There is no "innocently stumbling across an open door and looking in" in this situation like the way you're trying to paint it.

Even if your analogy held up, taking photos of things and distributing them with malicious intent basically erases any sort of claim that might justify looking through an unlocked phone.

I just don't understand why you think it should be legal to rummage through other peoples belongings looking for embarrassing shit to distribute.

Her phone was unlocked and he took pictures of the pictures on her phone with his phone, and he's being charged with Computer Crimes?

Contrary to what some people here believe, leaving something unlocked doesn't confer consent to rifle through it. If the photos were plainly displayed in the open without him having to actually touch the phone then it would be a different story.

But accessing someones property and then proceeding to share what you find with malicious intent breaks numerous laws in just about every jurisdiction, whether it be a phone, a car, a home, or an office.

jacobvandy wrote on Mar 6, 2016, 21:36:

Don't be dumb, that's obviously theft (and if the door is closed, it's still technically B&E). With that analogy, the door was OPEN and the kid took a look inside.

Actually if you're going to use that analogy then it's a closed, but unlocked door. It's still illegal to enter someones unlocked home or car and snoop around. There is zero legal precedent that states unlocked personal property laying around confers consent to search that property.

Bit of an overstatement.

A senior development director left. They basically write up schedules and what not. It's not really a position where a project is left in disarray or ruined if they change hands. It's essentially a logistics position.

The lead writer leaving is more interesting, but that's not really critical either. Someone could easily pick up and resume that work. And it would be hard for the writing on Mass Effect to get any worse anyway.

Other than that, I haven't heard of anyone else of note leaving.

Not really seeing much for me in the Vive. I'm not interested in standing up and walking 3 inches around the cluttered glorified closet my computer sits in so that advantage is kind of void. I'm also not really interested in using some weird controllers for gimmicky games. I just want the head tracking and immersion.

Just not enough to justify the huge price premium over the Rift. Even the Rift is probably too expensive to justify at the moment. We'll see what reviews of the final products say.

Never understood why some people were under the impression this thing was going to be cheaper than Oculus.

There is no cheap access point for VR at all. If you want to go Gear VR its $99 + $700-800 phone. If you want Oculus Rift its $599 + ~1500 PC that can run this. The Vive is $799 + ~1500 PC again.

So your looking at between $1000 (phone) or 2.5K (highend PC) for a VR capable system. Thats not mainstream yet. These headsets were treated like they would be affordable for about the cost of a next generation console. It was really how they set the expectations.

No, it's definitely not mainstream. I think Sony's offering will be the "cheap" entry point, but even that is going to cost a bit, and will probably have the weakest specs. For Oculus at least, and probably HTC, this is expensive hardware sold at cost. The idea is to get early adopters to be the evangelists for the technology, and also find out what people like and dislike about it. But they need to show us what the technology is capable of.

These headsets needs to impress people if they are going to carve out a place in the market. You don't impress by releasing half-ass hardware at a cheap price. That'll get the technology dismissed as people say "Well, maybe they'll have the tech figured out in another 10 years." Yes, you might get more sales, or even turn a profit on the hardware. But that'll be the last generation of that hardware you sell because people will be underwhelmed.

If you support/purchase any Season Pass DLC you are far too stupid for words.

Has there ever even been one that ended up being a "good deal" with enough content to justify that type of advanced pricing?

There have been quite a few but it doesn't change the fact that it's still buying something sight unseen and not necessarily a smart purchase.

I don't believe anyone who says they pirate a game, play it, and then buy it if they are satisfied. Yeah, maybe they buy it on a Steam sale 2 years later when they want to re-play it, but they aren't slapping down $50-60 when it really counts in the first critical couple weeks of sales. It's too tempting to find excuses to not pay for it once you've already had it for free.

The bottom line is that people pirate because it's easy to do, usually doesn't get you caught, and if caught, only gets you a sternly worded letter from your ISP. And most importantly, because people like free shit.

I've always found the PC community's attitude towards piracy funny. If a developer or publisher complains about piracy, everyone freaks out and pretends it's not really a thing and there's no way it could impact sales and please oh god don't abandon the PC platform you assholes.

But then a few days later they are justifying why it's actually okay to pirate games.

Look, I don't give a shit if you pirate games. I've done it myself in the past. But don't try and justify your shit. You either just wanted free shit or didn't want to wait for a sale. There's no situation in which pirating a game is the moral choice. Sure, the consequences both to you and the developer are minimal and you're not exactly eating babies, and MAYBE you even pay for it later. But it's not justifiable.

Developers are putting out a product and asking a price for that product. Your choice is either to buy the product, or not buy it. If you're not comfortable with the price, or are not certain you'll be getting your money's worth, your only legitimate choice is to neither purchase nor play the title.

The developers are not entitled to your money, but neither are you entitled to play their game. Stop pretending otherwise.

4. Re: Blade & Soul Patched; Passes 2M Users Feb 11, 2016, 15:04 NKD

Yeah, not really impressed by a couple million (cumulative) players for an F2P. There's literally no barrier to entry, no buy in. It's easy to get that for any F2P that has semi-competent marketing.

2 million would be an impressive number if it were subscribers. But as usual, in 6 months to a year, it's going to be a ghost town with a bunch of server merges.

The thing is with an F2P the number of players is really an irrelevant metric anyway. All that matters is the amount of sales in the cash shop. A game with less players can be a lot more successful financially if it is structured to milk those players for more money.

A player who buys nothing in the cash shop is literally a liability.

I grew disinterested in competitive gaming a long time ago. It's too much of a timesink. You have to spend a ton of time getting good at the game, and then you have to spend a ton of time to STAY good. Especially in games that re-balance frequently or have new iterations.

But all that time means less time spent on all the other games that come out that I want to play. I don't want to be one of those morons who has rarely played a game other than League of Legends in the last 3 years but still calls myself a gamer.
