I'm mostly a single-player and/or PVE guy but I had a lot of fun in both betas, within groups and on my own. Put in a total of 32 hours between the two with the majority of it in the Dark Zone. Had a complete blast. I pre-ordered a regular edition before the first beta, after this one I bumped it up to the gold edition. No question whatsoever. The cheapest right now (official Ubisoft vendors) is Gamesplanet, comes out to $73.45 if you use the forUNCUT deal after transaction (GBP->USD) fees. Box can be had for $79.99 and applicable taxes on Amazon with Prime. May be possible to get it cheaper at places like Best Buy if you're part of a game membership club.

For people who loved the Dark Zone play like Slick, be sure to get the gold edition. It comes with the Survival expansion which makes the entire city a Dark Zone. You can get it via Season Pass later, of course, but you'd miss out on some bonuses in the meantime. Again, like I said, no question! I'm recommending the regular edition for my casual gaming friends but any serious PC gamer is going gold. If I can get 32 hours in two weekends out of a 4-level PVE stint with 90% of the game and features (e.g., crafting) cut off, and enjoy myself with 1/5 of the map and 1/3 of the Dark Zone, I'm pretty sure I'll get my money's worth.

I have the G910. Got it last Black Friday for $90. Couldn't resist the deal even though I already had a G710+. Anyway, experience with both allows me to help a little on the nuances of the Logitech software.

First, you can't really use modifiers in macros, a modifier being like ctrl +, alt+, etc. They work fine in my Microsoft (Sidewinder) macros so it's definitely a Logitech software issue. There are ways around that but generally speaking you can't do it directly. It's annoying as hell.

Second, some of the keys don't light up correctly, at least on the G910. For example, the num lock key requires you to hold down the key to get the light on due to how the profiling works. Also, the "all white" setting isn't white due to the LEDs they use, it's blue-shifted, so exact color representation (RGB) is impossible.

Really, Logitech software is better than it used to be (when Windows 10 first came out, it didn't work at all), but it still needs work. It is really nice if you have a Logitech mouse as well and coordinate them with specific game profiles (I have the G700s). Still, the macros leave a lot to be desired; there's even a text limit, so my attempts to use them for multiplayer events (as in, announcing a phase or something) found it way too limiting.

My advice is to use other software in conjunction with it to make the most of it. Specifically, you will want AutoHotkey. That allows you a way to use the Logitech macros without their inherent limitations if you're clever with programming, although really you should use AHK anyway since it's a life-changer.

The game is actually pretty solid, but the beta is awful. They limit you to just one main mission (main game will have 10+), 2 side missions (30+) and a dozen encounters in the SP portion. In the MP portion, you're limited to just 1/3 of the Dark Zone (with a correspondingly smaller instance population of 24 vs. 64) and zones < level 8 in the SP portion (2 hubs). Your base is limited to just one wing and the vast majority of stuff is cordoned off even for that. You do get some sense of guns, mods, and such, but options for getting them are limited. All in all, this is more of a demo than a beta, a stress test at best. People expecting a real meaty beta are bound to be disappointed. This is more of a marketing move to let people try the game out for a few hours to get a feel for it.

Absolutely agree on the actors. Vince Vaughn was completely the wrong choice. I actually cringed or laughed at the way some of his (admittedly terrible) lines were delivered. I also agree with you that McAdams rose to the occasion as a nice surprise. Also, for me, forcing in a homosexual story-line like that was It's too generic these days.

I also agree about the story. The first season had a much more traditional horror theme to it, not quite noir, and put a modern spin on it. The major themes weren't particularly new but the way they meshed them together and paced it was just right. Season two played it more safe and they, more damagingly, let their prior success impact the pacing, rather than pretending it was the first season all over again with a new story (which, to be fair, is exactly what is stated in the linked article).

I've worked the industry, too. When something like this happens you pull the plug. You ever hear of the Chernobyl disaster? This level of incompetence is comparable. I've been in that situation. Much smaller scale, sure, but they hire you with the understanding that there is a chain of command and if that breaks down you pull the damn plug. History is full of lieutenants defying their superiors to great effect, but this is more akin to a bunch of chickens running around without their heads. A good employee stands up, takes command, and makes the decision.

I only say this because it is a clear sign that Valve's management style has started to lean a little bit too liberal. When you have a community like that, who takes responsibility? That's exactly why you have clear lines of authority. It's why management styles based around group hugs and improvised pow-wows don't work in a crisis. If this were any other company you'd expect someone to resign by now, right? You'd probably make fun of it - a scapegoat! Yet to not point even one finger is even more ludicrous.

It works on a small scale. It doesn't on a large one. It's why communism and socialism fail beyond the compounds that first tried it in the 19th century. Mankind has evolved to work in groups of up to 100 but we lose traction past that; it requires a different way of thinking. Valve needs to adapt its initially successful approach or it risks being swallowed up by the morass of prior technology upstarts.

I used Angie's List quite a bit when I moved a few years back. No problem with any of the contractors in terms of quality although I didn't perhaps get the best deal. Still, coming to a new area, I trusted it better than a dart into the yellow pages. That being said the site itself misrepresented some things and I was part of a (successful) class action lawsuit and I stopped using them after that, obviously.

Intelligent step for them, I wish the franchise the best, but frankly (as I've stated in other MWO threads on here) I think they kinda botched things through initial poor community relations and later through design decisions that make it seem monetization takes precedence. (and none of the "you can do fine playing free!" and "they exist to make money!" retorts, please; there's a vast amount of gradients when it comes to F2P)

I agree wholeheartedly. I bought it during the recent $15 sale and I'm a video game veteran, but them just throwing you into the deep end is...ridiculous. I tried to get a refund from Steam but I had spent >2 hours on the tutorials they did have (I like to take my time, not to mention keybinding alone took 30 minutes). Yes, you can do the "demo" for free, like I was even aware of that, but it wouldn't have changed the fact you need 10+ hours to even know what the game is like. Even at 15-20 hours I was just consistently frustrated by nuanced shit that screws you over if you don't know exactly what's going on.

In a way it is more "immersive" as someone else stated and it was fun learning new stuff, but on the whole I have to say they have no chance in hell of maintaining new players with how it is right now. I just found the entire experience to be lacking in what I consider very basic things. I'm sure it remains attractive to a small subset of gamers but there's a ton of potential there and they just seem to "leave money on the table" so to speak. The few friends I did let try the game threw their hands up in utter dismay at the clumsy interface and lack of newbie guidance.

3.5GB is plenty for a 970, unless you're running SLI. I run two 760s at 2GB and I play at 1080p with great success. AMD cards especially have fantastic memory design with tons of bandwidth and generally more memory. Yet you have the 2GB, 128-bit width GTX 960 which is just a fantastic card. VRAM is massively overrated and always has been. It's all about profit margins.

With modern games like Armored Warfare (CryEngine), I come in at 74% memory usage (again, 2GB) at 1080p with everything at ultra. That's about 1.5GB with cards that manage >970 performance. Generally this means 60 FPS at 60-80% GPU usage which is the sweet spot for me. If my intention was 1440p and 120 FPS/Hz, sure, 3.5GB might be limiting, but that level of performance is beyond a single 970.

I studied memory design in college for my computer engineering degree. Specifically, cache optimization. What you find is that having more cache after a certain point is detrimental to performance. The amount of money Intel has spent on determining the right amount for their CPUs would probably surprise a lot of people. The best example of this concept is the first rendition of WEI, where chips with smaller caches actually performed better because the randomized nature of the test meant that anything that was cached was useless; caching more, and searching through that larger cache, reduced your score.

RAM in a modern operating system is essentially between a HDD (or SSD) and the CPU caches in performance. A typical system has more than enough RAM so you get a lot used as system cache by the OS. This often improves performance for consistent or predictable workflows. I mentioned above that the WEI test scored worse because it was intentionally randomized; the same thing applies here. If a game is coded such that from the system's perspective, every memory request is unique, having more RAM will actually reduce performance. It's not rocket science, it's just poor programming.

Additionally applying these concepts to a multi-threaded scenario means you will have some cores or core threads waiting longer for results because they are unique. This reduces parallel performance and in fact might lead to CPU-limited environments where there shouldn't be such a thing. A good example of that in a modern engine would probably be the CryEngine. Armored Warfare's Object Detail setting is entirely CPU-limited largely because it has redundant calls for objects that are treated as novel. It's a huge trade-off but it illustrates how engine design is geared towards specific (console) devices.

It's called memory creep. When memory outpaces software - and keep in mind that in the old glory days of gaming it was the opposite situation - developers get lazy. It's been a huge problem in javascript programming for years now. I'll admit that's a different thing because of how the language works with its dump/heap mechanics, but one could argue the language got popular in response to this situation.

With Windows and proper design, extra memory is used as cache to speed up overall performance by predicting what you'll require. People often decry this as wasting memory, others say it's good. The reality is your CPU already does this with multiple layers of cache. Then it does it again with RAM. The OS is just another layer on top of that which is better aware of your actual usage. A large, and I mean large part of CPU design is based around branch prediction and the best use of cache. Source: designed it before

My point is, memory as we know it - RAM - is so ridiculously cheap for its size and performance relative to software needs that programmers don't even consider it in the vast majority of cases. That being said, you're absolutely correct. It's just that it's no longer a priority to the eggheads.

Couldn't help myself, read some of the anonymous comments. It's ridiculous to me because half of that stuff happens to EVERYBODY who works in programming in the gaming business. Seriously. You're overworked, you're treated like expendable shit, and that's pretty much the way of it. It really sounds like some people got excited and went to work for the company and then realized it isn't a liberal arts painting weekend but 80+ hour grind weeks where you sleep in the office...because that's WHAT IT IS.

I could care less about this game or this particular shit-throwing contest (outside of the journalistic integrity part) but seriously, I see "a Game of Thrones" type management? ROFL. Welcome to a majority of the studios in development today. I'm just giving my insight based on experience in the industry and what I read is nothing new to me, it's the same shit I've read from people who couldn't hack it in the industry and got canned because they don't realize the ridiculous demands it has on people's lives.

Really. It ruins your social life. It breaks up marriages. There's a reason the turnover rate is ridiculously high. If you're not passionate and willing to work yourself to the bone for an asshole of a boss, then DON'T TAKE THE JOB. You signed up for it, don't come back later and anonymously be a bitch about it because you got in over your head.

(P.S. I previously made a post about the voice actors union thing where I said for this industry - gaming - they need to get one for the programmers and essential components first, and THIS IS WHY)

Allow me to offer a recent, real world example of what happens with things like this.

I'm an avid Star Trek Online player and I know many people here also enjoy the game. In the past we've enjoyed voice work done by many of the original Star Trek actors but we also had random people and game staff doing lesser voices for the game. The most notable example is, of course, Kurland, but there are many others.

Well STO's parent company, Perfect World Entertainment, has decided to go with SAG. This makes it impossible for Kurland's voice actor to reprise his role. It also raises the general rate (cost) for voice actor work, reducing the amount of star voice actors returning to reprise their roles. The game community has of course not responded positively to this and it has had at least some impact on the game.

I'm not pushing this forward as an argument in one direction or another but rather pointing out what this may mean for less popular games and the industry as a whole.

The problem I have with the whole idea, at least from the standpoint of the gaming industry, is that you have so many jobs that are really in a deplorable state. Programmers, artists, writers, even musicians have terrible hours and a ridiculous turnover rate. I used to work in the industry and maintain friends still in it and they all say the same thing. Yet you end up getting unions not with the vital components of the industry but with the ones that are peripheral at best. Essentially what I'm saying is that I'm not against the idea of unions in the industry so much as against the fact they're always misapplied.

Anyone who has worked in programming will tell you just how overworked they are, and how they are treated as fungible assets to be dispensed of once work is complete. The demands on a programmer are often vague and may expand to cover other areas. That is pretty much the definition of stress in the workplace. Voice actors come in after the script is ready, read off the lines on a schedule, and go home. Certainly that makes it easier to form a union but that's also the job least requiring it; it is this irony, or contradiction if you prefer, that makes this so absurd. It's like giving guns to the militia before the army.

That's not even getting into matters of corruption and rampant patronage. Just read about the old guild systems found in late Medieval and Renaissance Italian city-states and you will see why the arts today cling so tightly to unions, and also how they really work.
