Hopefully it will improve things for the big pipes, the consumer end is still all over the place world wide.

Australia has its NBN fibre network going in at the moment, but its slow to roll out and it's being run by the government. Which means at any time the politicians decide they don't want to they will stop rolling it out (we have a election coming up and this is a point of issue).

At the moment I'm on a top tier plan of $100aud (I don't pay this, I have a discount) for 500gig cap (up and down counted) at speeds of 100mbit down 2.4mbit up. The NBN ranges depending on company and their uploads/caps are much better but not in my area.

To think when I was younger I always wanted a faster connection, and now world wide I have a very good connection. Problem now is most content provides can't keep up. Annoys me to no end when a 1080p stream lags from one provider, yet I can have 10 open from another.

So with that in mind, not only do the consumer ends need to keep pace, but so does the content side. Hopefully newer techs such as that one helps them get some nice phat pipes up and running =)

Edit: NBN Fibre network, although a NBN Fire network could be interesting

There is a post on reddit about the fact the are getting the "leaked" image from some kid who made it for a joke.

It started on the smaller sites, and now the big ones are reporting it. They have all mostly added a Update stating that it's a mockup by some random but it was amusing to watch it blow up into "This is news!!"

What the hell is a zinester... even my spell check says that it isn't a word.

Let's make up words to give ourselves a label and make ourselves relevant. Yay! Hey wait, it appears to come from that "woman" who can't research very well and gave herself another label as a "pop-culture critic".

I'll leave the academics to the labels and just enjoy the games (what I decide is a game).

Here in Oz (damned wizards) we can now get our naughty games... well some. It's a slow process and many have to be reclassified so that will take awhile. Even then, many won't bother as their games will be too old.

My Left 4 Dead 2 is still bloodless =( But at least I can get the new Mortal Kombat.... =\

Well that's all your history gone to crap.

That was boring... and that's coming from having no power for 48 hours in a flood zone.

Then if you read the youtube comment from the new guy he sounds like an ass.

Pass on this if you liked watching all your history. It's that bad =(

Somebody mentioned he reads things, I'm not interested in the game from a gameplay pov.

However, from a marketing perspective he really should play up the dinosaur part. That concept looks cool and should be shown as a reach goal to have a playable dinosaur humanoid character.

People love dinosaurs and they sell.

Would love to see them succeed just because of his previous games.

From the looks of the specs PS4 coding will likely be similar to developing for a PC using opengl, as their current API is really similar to opengl as it is.

Xbox will naturally be more liken to directx (a subset no doubt, with some hardware specific addons).

So really it will be not far off making a game that supports Mac, Linux and Windows. Hopefully that is what will happen meaning it'll take less time for developers to get their games out and start learning to take full advantage of the system (with the hope of it leading back to PC aswell).

The memory part is here nor there, Sony has chosen faster ram, but less of it, while MS has gone with more but slower. It will really come down to transfer rates than the size of the ram. Console devs are already very good at streaming the data they need when they need it.

I remember learning about how they would position the data on their discs for the PSX to get the best loading times. While the bad games that didn't optimize it would have shitty load times.

It is rather interesting that Starcraft 2 can have offline play but no Diablo 3. That has to be one of those things that tick people off.

Then again, SC2 has no LAN and they cop rage every time there is a issue at a major tournament.

Listening but also dismissing what is said. Unfortunate they are slowly turning themselves into the bad guy. What's that old quote? Live long enough to see yourself become the bad guy or something.

Beamer I disagree HTPCs are closer to what the steam box will most likely be. Difference I see is that they will all have the same (or close to) CPU/Video setups to keep that part consistent.

Imagine they release 2 versions, the normal package which runs the majority of games at med-high settings, then a second top tier which runs them at the high-ultra levels. Assuming you only had to support 2 CPUs (both same manufacturer), 2 GPUs (same as cpu), same motherboard/audio you could just have a steambox update monthly (or whatever period that suits) which would make it idiot proof.

And since they are doing the updates and distributing them themselves they can check if the drivers work with the games before release, or force a rollback if required.

If they could also get netflix/hulu/media company to add their stuff to it, then add all the computer software that they find compatible, sure you can uses whatever, but this way they have a short list of what is safe to use, and as we know people will generally use what they are told.

This is why I think steam wanted to start working with selling software too. Plus they control what products go there, and then they can on boot show off ads for the new software. Really they don't have to spend heaps on R&D the best they can do is use their market power (ie buying millions of units) to get the cpu/gpu/audio/ram combo down to cheap and box it up. I believe the Xi3 stuff is simply their way to test the market, and see if it is feasible.

These guys are damn smart if they are going that way, and I look forward to it. If they can get it on the same level as a console but with the power of a pc they will make people happy. Why have a locked down console when you have choices, you can even Skype to grandma with her pc while you sit on the couch.

I can see this as a better way to get into the living room, and worry about making game/software sales. The hardware business is nothing more than a vehicle to get there.

Heck, they make it look like the Xi3 I can unplug goto a friends place, find a spare screen (most middleclass houses these days have multiple screens with HDMI or similar connections) and just get into gaming.

Finally if they could license something similar to the keyboard/mouse combo that the phantom console turned into (google it) then they could even put me on the couch playing an RTS.

Lots of ifs and maybes, but damn it could be good. They really just need to work on the manufacturing costs and distribution. I hope Xi3 is a great test pilot for them. Cutting out the cost of the OS will save them bundles that can be gained as profit. Heck breaking even on the Steambox would be a great strategy just because they are getting their store in front of more eyes, and people already love it.

I speculate that your post has made a valid point.

Holy crap! You just doubled in value!!!

Tomorrow you might make a post about something that isn't interesting...

Oh no! You've dropped to 5% value! What are you doing HorrorScope!

Unfortunately for most business it's all about the Quarters and Yearly reports not long term sustainable (see profitable) business.

Give this a go jdreyer. It's not the single player version, but feels nicer. http://drackbolt.blogspot.com.au/

Otherwise http://play-dune.com/# for a online version of the single player but without updates.

Glad this popped up, I've been pulling out the classics lately, especially the older FPS games. Amazing what people have taken the time to update to run on new harder with minor tweaks for controls or games that still work as they are.

Playing Warcraft Orcs and Humans in dos box at the moment... it's so much harder than the later ones. Only 4 unit selection, no selection box and no hot keys! Madness!

Would love to see Intel buy up the ATI division and then work on what AMD has started with the lower power options.

That way they could then profitably support the high end divisions R&D. Though, I don't know if intel is a great choice for driver support though =(

Im probably going to skip this. Just for spite. I might even pirate it, depending on whether I want to check the story out or not at the time. Fuck Blizzard.

Err ok, piracy out of spite is really silly but whatever. Personally I'm going to skip it simply because I didn't really enjoy SC2 that much. Even the SP stuff felt really weird because half of the game was essentially tutorials and I rarely felt like I got to bring everything to bear until the very end.

The custom mapping community just doesn't seem there compared to War3, not sure why. The vanilla MP takes too much time/commitment to get good at unfortunately as well so I'm left with few reasons to purchase it.

The mod scene isn't going aswell because of the system Blizzard has in place, the new more awful battle.net. It's been quite a wash considering they call it 2.0 and it was missing basic features and it's taking an exp to add them.

Impossible to find the custom game you're after, and even then you get the wrong version, or it's hosted on another region (players can only upload to their region). It's all been a joke in my opinion.

I can't see myself bothering, I was watching some of the major tours but now I have been watching fighting games instead. At least those guys don't have to worry about a match going to hell because of the online DRM.

I've got to say, I'm heaps impressed with the All Your History series.

They do a good job and research well (very few if any errors) and presentation is well thought out.

My only gripe would be the low quality, maybe if they could release a HD set on DVD or Blu Ray I'd buy it. Or even a downloadable HD version that costs, I'd pay for it. =)

Edit: So I type that, and notice the videos now support 720p. Hell yeah!
