Our second kitten came from the local vet after it was saved from a park with teenagers throwing it around (yep, around in the air) at only 4 weeks old.

She's now a beautiful girl who rather enjoys running across my keyboard =)

Good to see the little fella got a home. We started with 1 cat... we now have 4 in the house (3 are ours, 1 is my brothers). At our limit of pets to human ratios but would love a dog eventually (when we have a non-rented place).

Heh and here I thought I was alone on the matter.

Blizzard does make some fun games though, and they are all of a certain level of quality regardless of the generation of game.

Too bad the heros in multiplayer WC3 are my most hated part of it. Instead of being a RTS it became a RPG with some RTS units to assist the hero.

Heros worked great in the single player (was awesome to have Arthas get stronger etc...) but it was more like a RPG in that sense. Guess that's why I never did mind the way that C&C series worked in treating you as a commander as opposed to some sort of god just controlling lesser beings without explaination.

zirik wrote on Mar 12, 2010, 05:09:
what does sony use for its PS3 games? is it opengl?

Nope, they use their own custom API.

Developers on consoles tend to use it's API for the fastest access to the hardware, in the case of those consoles OpenGL just adds a layer they don't currently see worth the effort.

Biggest issue by far for opengl is driver issues compared to DX during the DX9 level. Most games that are developed lately in DX9 are the indie & casual level where they both can compete (DX10/11 level of detail for a model = 5-8 times longer to create). The worst offender is Intel as they are in so many laptops/desktop pcs these days due to the love of cheap hardware for the masses which is fine for software, but games are another story.

I personally hope opengl gets some luck, although I personally will be using a Graphics Engine for my efforts rather than direct API access. Easier to write for middleware then it is to attempt to support multiple APIs.

Everybody has bought lcd/plasma tvs (a lot for the first time in over 10+ years) and they expect them to dump those already to upgrade? Good luck.

I'm personally unimpressed by it all and I'm happy to stick with the now lackluster 2d heh.

The crackpots are prob quite often right with some of their guesses, but it's information warfare at it's best.

What is real and what isn't, that's the true question of the future.

I'm not a crackpot, but if you can think it up, somebody else can.

20. Re: NVIDIA Driver Issue Mar 5, 2010, 10:49 RenownWolf
Wow... this explains a lot, just the other night the video card overheated while playing CS:Source... and that game is hardly demanding on my card.

I was wondering why I never heard the fan speed up, and then noticed the game started acting dodgey. Felt the side of the case and it was much warmer than I've ever had it be. So I opened it up to make sure it was clean etc... It was very low on dust but the video card was too hot to touch =\

Opened it up and cleaned out... next to nothing, it's only 4 months old and I keep my case clean.

*shakes in fear* Off to install Rivatuner and setup the cooling myself, this is crazy insane =\

8. Re: New NVIDIA WHQL Reference Drivers Mar 3, 2010, 03:51 RenownWolf
Pardon my complete ignorance on this matter (google doesn't appear to wanna help me, and the nvidia site is light on info).

I've got a Geforce GTX 275 with a HDMI output on it already (no need for these dvi adapters I read about). So from what I gather, you just plug in a HDMI cable with audio outputs also into the tv and it takes care of it all via the drivers? I know for videos it won't matter, but is there any performance hit for games?

With memory controllers going onto the cpu, and sound going into video cards, the inside of a computer is likely to look quite different to what it has. Guess it gives the mobo guys more room for extras (consider a gpu/sound chip and memory controller on the cpu). The mobo will be empty except for 2 chips and some ram heh.

I got Wolf3d when I was a 6 year old, then Doom soon after. I'm not a violent person, but hey the studies are always right....

Somethings go too far for young minds, but this isn't about young mind. If you're over the age of 18 and you think it's a-ok to rape because a computer game lets you do it... then my friend you're far more fucked up then a simple act of taking away games could deal with.

A well designed turned based jrpg is like a battle in chess. It will never die, just with more choices it will become less popular.

Personally I'd love to see more well balanced TBS rpgs that have a multiplayer mode. There was a MMO that came out (chinese culture based I think) that was quite kick ass in this regard, I love the combat! But... it had the usual grind, trade, craft parts of a mmo and it was f2p so you had to pay for stuff for you to move at a decent rate.

Ohh well, guess somebody will do it eventually.

I must say a lot of the battery tech issues are to do with patents =(

Lots of big tech companies and even oil companies own various different patents which makes releasing any tech quite difficult. I'm not with the "they are holding back on purpose to stop us" crowd, but rather I understand the issues as they stand affect some tech being released.

The job market is a crazy thing indeed.

A degree isn't the only thing you should gain however, you should come out of uni with a few portfolio projects under arm assuming you're a programmer. If you're in it for the networking side of things, get into some volunteer work for big events setting up their networks and make sure to get yourself some pretty letters saying how fantastic of a job you did. Both requires giving up social time and making effort, but that's what job hunter want to see.

A degree is just a piece of paper and proves you can complete 3+ year of something and you test well in exams. Doing the job on hand is another matter altogether.

9. Re: Blizzard Wants To Be Gaming's Facebook Feb 17, 2010, 21:42 RenownWolf
Ewww.... Nasties! These days you need an account everywhere and a program to go with it just to play a game.

The number of accounts and passwords you have to remember is insane now a days and they want to give me more. Steam is enough for me and I personally dislike the way facebook works. Randoms I hardly remember from highschool/old work places/hell adding me as a friend, that's why I deleted my account. Sure you can deny them, but then they send you a message and annoy you about it.

I just want to play games and have a choice to join in or not. Forcing this down my throat isn't a good thing.

It would be nice if all the big companies banded together and created 1 central program... but then again, they'd have to share the profits then =(

That's true Jag, but you'd think they'd at least try trump it up a fair bit being a well known nerd IP after all.

I've read some users posts on other forums that paid for it, appears to be a fair bit of regret heh.

Actually I'm suprised there are no review up already. Most games on release have heaps of reviews and at least some from major sites which got press releases.

Guess they are hoping the IP will sell it before they have to worry about gameplay.

From a development point of view, DX10/11 is much nicer than DX9. So you can expect as the number of Win7 installs increase the number of games using DX11 will increase.

Just to note it's not so much about the added features, but simply because DX11 does make a fair few things easier for the developers to create games with.

Then again, I'm running Win7 on everything now (Win 7 starter on the netbook) and am slowly converting everybody I can. My inlaws now have it and they think it's fantastic considering they learnt how to use UAC to their advantage. My rule for free tech support is "Always say no when it pops up without my permission", it's not the be all and end all but it will save me lots of effort.

2 months so far and they haven't got any adware or spyware yet but now they can use it they want me to make some custom items for the farm to track growing levels and a database for the mother inlaws childcare business. Yay...
