Acclaim, not Activision. And yep, that's an incredibly good point -- I'm sure if someone really wants, Acclaim will help them change their name to Turok; but with sheer absurdity of the campaign, why would they really need any more PR?

There's no such thing as bad publicity

You don't get it do you? It's not about viewable colors, it's a technical issue for better effects. You wouldn't use 128bit outside of games (plus a small few other uses).

Granted, its application will be mainly used for calculated colors in light & particle rendering, but having those extra color choices available, but unused is still going to monumentally waste video bandwidth.)

I thought I said that

I really, really doubt the validity of this article. 128bit color != 128bit cards -- with 128 bit color, there are 3.4 * 10^38 different color possibilities. Each component channel (RGB) would then have approximately 7 trillion values. Considering that most RGB maps only take advantage of 256 shades (including window's own pallette, even at 32 bit), having an additional 24-25 bits per component color is going to be, as someone else already mentioned, a monumental waste of bandwidth.

(The maximum hex value for each color component at 128 bit color is around 659 7F89 4F5B -- imagine having to pick colors on webpages using 3 of these. Granted, its application will be mainly used for calculated colors in light & particle rendering, but having those extra color choices available, but unused is still going to monumentally waste video bandwidth.)

Yes, that's fairly idiotic for you to say.

Dragon's Lair's graphics are 1980's. BUT, the Dragon's Lair of the 1980's was completely hand-animated. The DL3D is cell/animation based 3D game. All those screens are rendered on the fly -- not drawn beforehand.

I think it's impressive that we've finally gotten to the point where we can create such an interactive game with the look of 1980's Dragon's Lair. Making polygons look like celled animations is NOT an easy task.

I used mostly the medium style, right up to Desann. Strong was far too slow for my tastes, quick was far too weak.

One of my favorite tricks (practice this on the ladder, it's incredibly fun), is force gripping someone, then as you rise them in the air, let go of the grip and force push. It takes some timing and skill to get the move down correctly (I should make a demo), but if you do, you'll hear a rewarding scream from whomever you just sent sailing in the air. This works with all enemies except Desann (including Tavion!), but requires level 3 push and level 3 grip to pull it off.

Have I mentioned lately that I love Warren Spector?

I have a feeling that within a few years, we'll no longer associate Ion Storm with Daikatana -- only with games such as DX, DX2, and Thief3.

That said, I wonder if they're planning on brining back J.C. as the lead in this game. Granted -- while any generic character could be developed for the lead and the game would work just as well, we know J.C.'s backstory, and like Garret in Thief, the game's story would take more meaning with a character we can already identify with.

Looks like any traces of anything done by Ion Dallas has been stripped away. Sweep their dark legacy under the rug just a bit

They should really consider formally changing their name -- people now have long since associated Ion Austin with quality; and Ion Storm with crap.

And hopefully, the webpage will be changed as well. The old green layout reeks of Daikatana.

Characters Dying in Deus Ex? Nov 26, 2001, 18:51

From the DE2 Article:
He considered it a failure that three characters had to die in the first game to complete the main plot

What were these 3 main characters? It's possible to save all the 'good guys' in the game -- Paul and Jock, as long as you took the necessary steps to save them. Sam Carter and Savage as the ones who were always on your side, and they didn't die, Tracer Tong, Dowd, Everett, and Alex as the guys who had their loyalties, but were all alive.

So who were the main characters who died? All of them were eventual enemies -- and this is natural -- I would hope that by the end of the game at least SOME of the enemies were dead.

Gimme a real rocket launcher, a chain gun, and a rail gun ... and I'll be happy.

And that's the problem -- if Unreal is designed so that the gameplay is like all other FPS games, what's the point? EVERY game and it's mother has a rocket launcher, some form of automatic bullet weapon, and some type of ultra-powerful hitscan slow reload weapon.

I agree about the writing, and the writing made it unclear as to what was going on in the story; but looking back at it, the story was pretty damn good, poor writing or no.

It may not be on par with Deus Ex, but it was still one of the best action games, and action game stories in recent years.

(Yes, yes, before I get flamed, I know that Deus Ex wasn't completely action; but you could tweak JC so that it pretty much was)

The story leaped from the monitor as though some great cheese bandit broke in to my apartment, unscrewed my monitor amidst my slumber, and placed so much moldy cheese in the CRT. The story was hard-boiled as though some deranged chef tried to place a dozen eggs in a frying pan equipped only to contain 10.

When I first started playing the game, the dialogue was a complete buzzkill. But then I realized that the game WAS trying to be over the top, and by the end, I really did enjoy the storyline.

In an e-mail interview, Gator CEO Jeff McFadden said his company is operating within its rights.

"We have the right to display this form of advertising. Web site publishers offer consumers free content that comes with advertising, and we do something very similar. We're a software publisher that offers consumers free software applications that come with advertising," McFadden wrote.

What? If I took a broadcast television or radio signal, spliced in my own commercials, and rebroadcasted it so it reached only a segment of it's intended population, people would notice right away, the real advertisors would be pissed, and the FCC would be breathing down my neck.

How is this ad-hijacking even remotely legal?

Gator's one of the worst programs you can run across -- even upon a forced uninstall, the bastard will leave a small snippet of code on the computer that will trickle-download the remainder of the code, and install it behind the user's back. In a few hours or days, depending on the user's connection, Gator will just show up again.

What's that mandate that's being used against the person in the Atlanta school system for his installing Distributed.net on all the school's computers? While I hate that case, if the school district wins, it could effectively make these stealth and forced (without clear and explicit permission from the owner of the machine) installs illegal under US law.

Once that happens, watch these viral marketing companies fold

Now, I can easily see that the Britney Spears Guide to Semiconductor Physics (http://britneyspears.ac/lasers.htm) is fake, but this Kate Moss guide just seems -- a little strange. I can't tell if it's real or fake. If it's real, then it's done well (and congrats, a model/actress that knows her basic computer hardware :)), but if it's fake, there's no humor whatsoever in it.

Last October, I actually WON an stuffed monkey on treeloot by accumulating enough banana $'s (I found a pretty underminded way of getting the loot, but it was still legal). I filled out the forms, and was told to wait 2-3 months. It's been nearly a year now, and still no stuffed monkey

Steampunk themed. If it is, then damn if I'm not excited about it; the entire Steampunk genre is one thats underexplored. I think that artists, developers and designers have been shy of steampunk ever since Wild Wild West.

I honestly don't mind it. While it IS very obtrusive (I'd rather be able to close it the moment it appears), you must realize that unless the webmaster is gracious (and wealthy) enough to host the site with the expenses coming out of his or her own pocket, some form of revenue is needed to keep the site afloat. The ads run at *.ign.com are FAR more obtrusive -- several don't even close their instance until the user clicks on the link. There should be consumer laws against that
