7. Re: Grand Theft Auto IV PC Patch Dec 13, 2008, 00:37 Aero
I can't remember the last time I've seen a game so desperately need anti-aliasing. I'd rather play it at 800x600 with 4xAA than 1680x1050 without it. The shadows look like garbage. It would probably even look better if you could turn them off. Basically, the whole thing would look better if you could smooth it out to hide the numerous little lighting artifacts. I've been thinking about just plugging my computer into my old CRT television to blur it out a little.

I actually get decent-ish performance though, probably in the 40's (50's according to the benchmark but I don't buy that), with the graphics settings in the middle but it looks like crap, even at its maximum settings.

Overall, I don't think it's terrible, it's just a huge disappointment compared to how it could have been if it were developed properly for the PC. It's still a good game underneath though. Just a disappointment.

I don't see anything in the patch list that seems like it would make a difference for me. Hopefully, I suppose. Maybe nvidia will be able to swing some drivers so it supports FSAA--not holding my breath on that one.

10. Re: Game Reviews Dec 5, 2008, 13:22 Aero
I wonder if Rockstar released this screwed up 1.0 on purpose so that the pirates will spend a bunch of time cracking it and then they'll immediately release 1.01 that solves all of the problems and is a whole new system to crack.

Okay, no, definitely not.

It is frustrating though because we know that there is an excellent game underneath all of the porting garbage, but they're just too incompetent to have done it properly. I do like the stories I've heard about the copy protection tricks though. Oldschool style.

If only they'd spent as much time fixing the game as they did programming in all of these tricks that screw up the gameplay for the pirate kiddies.

At least this review is going in the right direction. I'll take a 7 on the high end because, like Clear Sky, the game itself is (probably, haven't tried it) good, it just doesn't work properly. A straight up zero-fail sounds like it would be better for now at least so far as people who just won't be able to play it for bugs are concerned.

Completely unrelated, BIOHAZARD made me think of Bioforge, which is something I'd much rather see. I wonder what it would be like today

Probably like the original, requires ridiculously powerful hardware to play.

There's a lot of that going around lately. It would be cool though.

On the upside, this has proven to be an excellent litmus test for which review sites are entirely in the pocket of the publishers.

So far, everyone. Nothing but 9's--a 5 out of 5 at Gamespy for god's sake. Starting a week from now, the sites that actually went out and bought it and played it are going to be posting their reviews. I'm guessing in the 65-75% range. I could see something in the 80's maybe.

9. Re: CoD: Modern Warfare 2 & Bond Game Dec 4, 2008, 00:10 Aero
Oh, I like the scripted spawnyness of COD4. It's very intense. Given how fun a game it is though, it's a shame that once you've spent the six hours playing through it once, there isn't really any reason to play it again. What I'd like to see is episodic content like this, three hour episodes released every four or five months for $20 each. Once the underlying engine and a solid basic foundation of art assets created, I bet a couple smallish teams could pull that off alternating four or five month releases.

As it is, I'm looking forward to it a lot, but knowing I'm going to beat it in six hours and never play it again is going to be a bit of a let down after looking forward to it for a year.

I like that Left4Dead idea though. Take the same basic principle but replace the zombies with enemy soldiers in a war ravaged middle eastern city.

News Comments > Ships Ahoy - Grand Theft Auto IV
82. Re: PC GTA4 Ships Dec 3, 2008, 19:14 Aero
Haven't tried it, but it's a definite "give it some time to simmer" for me. I have some hope, naturally, but not a whole lot. With a patch or two and some specifically GTA4 optimized video drivers, maybe it will get a little better. Probably not if it really is this bad because that clearly means they don't give a damned, but maybe. If they can't make it look and play as well as the console version on my high(ish)-end system, no dice.

Though I won't, shameful as it is, it is games like this that make me consider downloading a bootleg version. Not to stick it to them or anything childish like that, but given the word on the street, I'd like to have an idea of how it will run before I give them my $50. I'd risk $50 on a game that might suck--them's the breaks--but a game that isn't playable is another story entirely. At the very least, give me a rolling benchmark "demo." I don't really trust them, but it's better than nothing.

When it gets down to $20, maybe even $30 if I'm really bored or something, I'll give it a go. Until then, I'm going to have to hear some very positive things from the interweb community at large.

It's a shame. I was looking forward to this one as I've never even seen it played on a console, but cultural phenomenon that it is, I wanted to try it.

C'est la vie.

Also, I notice that it's so far averaging above 9.0 on the review sites. Are these theoretical, "if it worked right" scores or what?

15. Re: Why Uncut GTA4 Passed in AU Dec 2, 2008, 19:02 Aero
It's a shame to hear that people are having trouble and that it's looking as though it might not be all that it was cracked up to be.

All the same, I wouldn't read too much into forum posts. It's generally only the people who are pissed off who bother posting and there is no way of knowing if they haven't just screwed something up, were running a pirated version, or just have bad luck. There may well be a thousand people for whom it's running perfectly fine for every "OMG this sux0rs, I have L33t PC, should be like 100fps" forum denizen who just took it for granted they would be able to play it on the maximum settings. I don't think I've ever seen an official game forum, even for excellent games, that wasn't full of whinging kids.

Probably enough to make you pause though, give it a week, and see what the deal is. It could just as easily be that it's a weak port and not worth your time. I do hope not though, but it wouldn't surprise me either way. I haven't played it in any form and was looking forward to seeing what everyone was so hyped about.

I'll let you know in a week.

edit: Oh, yeah, and naturally wait and see if Nvidia/ATI release optimized drivers which they probably will in the next few days if they're going to.

I like the ambient light idea, I thought that was pretty cool. Dunno about the fans, maybe I suppose. It's not something I would go out of my way to buy though, and certainly not at the price they were asking.

5. Re: Battlefield 2 Beta Patch by Christmas Nov 30, 2008, 15:46 Aero
I imagine this is probably going to far, but does anyone think that having centralized online rankings and such is a terrible idea? It's just a game. Is it that important to have some rank?

Cheaters with confidence problems and MMOG-style grinding are the last thing FPSs need. I suppose having both is good so that ranked servers could be thought of as a sort of flypaper for that, but look what happens with a game like Far Cry 2.

Personally, all of my enjoyment comes during the actual gameplay itself. What the results are overall, or even at the end of the match, isn't really that important. Naturally, I like to win and to keep score, but do I really care if I don't? Did I still have fun? Was my time wasted if I didn't win?

Talking to myself? Sure. It stops the voices in my head.

4. Re: Battlefield 2 Beta Patch by Christmas Nov 30, 2008, 15:42 Aero
Wasn't the grenade jumping thing actually a suggestion in the manual? May have been 1942, but I remember reading about that somewhere 'official.'

It was stuff like that that made Battlefield great. It's not supposed to be realistic, it's supposed to be ridiculous but with just enough realism so that it isn't a cartoon--more like an over-the-top, intentionally ridiculous action movie.

Anyways, it's interesting that they're still supporting it. I never played 2142, and I haven't played BF2 online in years, but it was an excellent game and it's nice to see there is still life in there. Eventually the cheaters ought to get bored and wander off, grow up, or somehow summon the confidence to talk to girls or something.

Cheaters suck. That one just totally boggles my mind. I can understand the appeal of actually researching and writing cheats (don't approve of it though), but actually using ones that other people have written is just bizarre behavior. I suspect it's the same sort of innate brain damage that leads teenyboppers using prefab scripts and utilities to compromise grandma's pre-SP1 XP installation to think that they are hackers. Way to double-click that icon kid. Mad skillz.

10. Re: Free BFG AGP/PCIe Upgrades Nov 25, 2008, 20:24 Aero
I have a BFG 6800 AGP card around somewhere. I might have given it to a friend or something though. If I could easily put my hand to it and if it wasn't going to involve too much in the way of shipping charges, I would probably do it just for the hell of it.

I don't know what I would do with a PCIe 6800 though. Give it to a friend I suppose. I do have a few friends with PCIe systems but integrated graphics that can't even play a DVD fullscreen without stuttering. They might have use for it.

Naw, on second thought, it's too much trouble. Thinking Santa ?

I don't think I've ever played Blood Money. I've never used Gametap either and I'm not sure I want to. I take it I need to install all kinds of crap onto my computer, download 2 gigabytes, and then uninstall it all again when the time limit runs out?

It would probably be easier to just order it online for $10. I suppose it's nice to have the option though. What is the general opinion of Gametap?

News Comments > GRIN Making Terminator Salvation
5. Re: GRIN Making Terminator Salvation Nov 20, 2008, 23:01 Aero
I believe that one was the first one Bethesda did, years and years ago. I still remember the rust colored copy protection paper, and stealing from cash registers.

I have very fond memories of that game. The "body count" statistic proved to be the most fun 'points' earning had ever been in a video game up to that point amongst my friends.

I probably only killed the Terminator or Sarah Connor a half dozen times, but I bet my all-time body count was easily several thousand, if not more. If I didn't get 100 kills in a sitting, something was wrong. When the green blobs (army) started coming, and I had my M-60, it was on.

It really was a lot like GTA, but almost ten years earlier.

Cool sound too. I just used the PC speaker but I think it was one of the first games to support the Sound Blaster (I remember it came with an insert advertising the Sound Blaster for $250). It was definitely the first game I remember using full digitized sound, which was remarkable because it also did it using just the PC speaker. That "I'll Be Back" game over bit made my jaw drop the first time I saw it.

Um. I think every time this game is posted I go on this same trip down memory lane. I've been doing that a lot lately.

5. Re: Universal Combat Collectors’ Edition Patches Nov 20, 2008, 22:47 Aero
Unpopular a view as it may be, I think these games are underrated.

They're not perfect, sometimes their reach exceeds their grasp and there can be some very annoying foibles, but they do have a certain appealing depth to them and I appreciate that, particularly these days as almost anything other than increasingly samey action shooters are jammed into a smaller and smaller niche. They do hark back to better days, though those days are probably a little distorted by a rosy haze.

I'm glad that someone is making games like this because regardless of their shortcomings these are, in theory anyways, how I imagined computer games would be 'in the future' fifteen or twenty years ago. There are very few games that even approach that. There are a lot of great games I wouldn't even have been able to imagine back then, but games like this were what a lot of people dreamed about.

Jeez. They ought to give the Terminator license back to Bethesda. At least whatever they made would sound good on paper.
