Mwahaha

I dunno mid-ish 1990s? I think they could bring quite a bit back then. A 4 150 MHz processor DayStar Genesis w/ a GB of RAM (or was it 1.5?) was certainly a lot more than I had at the time.

Hm, at first it just gave me a nice black screen. I couldn't even give it the 3 finger salute. Which was odd because I never uninstalled the current WC3 and it ran just fine.

I was able to fix that issue with a reboot and a repair (which undoes all your settings in both clients it would seem) so if you get a black screen I guess give that a go.

As soon as I saw that title I was like "look, it is David Brevik".

He has basically made a few really sub-par games since parting with Blizzard. His only real non-Diablo credit was a minor footnote on WarCraft III. His own ideas for Diablo as a turnbased RPG were canned. It wouldn't even be the Diablo that his fans know. Since then his biggest game was what? The sad and buggy Hellgate?

I wish him the best in the future and I have no doubt that, even if he needed a little co-developer feedback, he made a lot of the Diablo magic. Now though? He just gets lost in tales of his past glory and how he could do it so much better now (though he never does).

At any rate Diablo 2 works just fine on modern PCs. People are playing it right now. Mods have been made for the AR and res. If the black bars on the screen bother him so much he should look into this dark wizardry of old called a CRT.

That phrase gets tossed around a lot, "hasn't aged well." Do any of you watch classic Black and White films? Just enjoy it for what it is. People will say the same phrase about 'modern games' 20 or more years from now, a new age of 'haven't aged well' games.

For some reason I missed this before, sorry about that. I am not talking about visuals (to your B&W movie comparison), but mechanics. Lots of the casting mechanics and the ensuing downtime is rather rough now. The backtracking multiple times to complete quests is another example.

It isn't a graphics thing. Think of it more like how many puzzles in classic adventure games seem absurd and random now, but they really didn't at the time.

News Comments > Senator Presses FTC and ESRB on Loot Boxes
18. Re: Senator Presses FTC and ESRB on Loot Boxes Feb 15, 2018, 16:58 MattyC

Most publishers provide NO WAY of exchanging your loot (ie casino chips) into real cash.

Yep, and that is a good thing. This is a purely optional purchase in a game - something you should be playing for fun.

teens could be targeted for what is arguably petty gambling

Are prizes in candy and cereal gambling? I mean you paid for those 45,000 boxes of Diabeetus0's, but you had to! How else could you win the prize? Curse those awful sugar barons targeting our teens! Get your pitchforks! We have to think of the children!!

How is this drastically different from baseball cards (which actually can be worth a lot of money)? CCGs?

Now, if you could exchange your loot box for cash then you might be on to something, but that isn't the case. Not to mention you can get the Great Golden Derp Gun of +1 without grinding and the "house" gets your cash. You winning and the house winning (or whatever) are no longer mutually exclusive events. They don't really need to act like a casino, a player with cosmetic items is really just an advertisement for their loot box system.

I don't really like loot boxes that much (micro trans ones anyway - ones for progress can be kind of fun) and we may need to mark games that have them. Beyond that I really can't see how this can be an issue. We have random chance based things all around us, gamers have been able to buy progress (gold farmers in MMOs etc), and it looks like civilization is still here. We seem to be fairly resilient when it comes to great moral panics.

AMP for email is a terrible idea.

Yes, it is. I would have actually added a few more terribles there myself. However, it is probably going to become a thing anyway with Google on board.

I came back for season 12 to play the Necro class/content. I had fun, but yeah I don't think I will be playing any of season 13.

Sadly I don't think it has aged that well due to some of the mechanics, but I loved some Arcanum when it came out.

Gigantic had its own little bit of style that I enjoyed, but overall it was yet another MOBA and that is a really crowded market right now.

I am prepared to be ostracized! I liked Fallout 4. I spent an absurd amount of time making my little towns and leveling them up to fortresses of safety for my ungrateful residents. I did so legit, console commands, pffft. I even liked the DLC.

That said, for that sort of world feel (though sadly without all the building) I am all about Wasteland 2 right now.

News Comments > Are "Let's Play" Streams Legal?
75. Re: Are Jan 30, 2018, 04:11 MattyC

Fair use absolutely encompases transformative work. A review, a parody, basic reporting, and even general (valid) criticism are all covered. Basically if you just say "I'm Billy Youtube and this is the MOBA KotH game RandyRandosFighting - The Lootboxening" and then show you playing, then perhaps not. However if you are providing your own content (informing, reviewing, or just covering) something then I cannot see how a Let's Play would not be covered.

IANAL and all, but I don't know any of the uses I mentioned would be "essentially admitting to infringement". They are the exact things fair use exemptions are for.

Personally I still prefer a proper review though.

PUBG Known Issues
  • They clearly haven't made it very well.

  • In all seriousness, enjoy the game if you like it. This all sounds like things the devs can resolve. I imagine when it exploded in popularity they team really wanted to finish it up ASAP and I guess this is the result.

Before anybody comes in and badmouths Pillars 1, let me say, the current version is miles beyond the vanilla Day 1 release.

While I don't think I ever badmouthed it, I would agree with your statement. I missed the vanilla start, but I was in the beta and it was .. well it wasn't the best. They ended up making a pretty fun game though, it just took a long time.

I still felt the combat was somewhat bland/weak, so this will be a wait and see for me, but they certainly turned PoE around from what it was at first.

I really enjoyed every DA game except the last. It had its good points and I never found it bad per se, but it just didn't hook me like the rest. I would gladly give a new one a go.

Interesting. I have no goals in Legion other than to play until it feels like a grind.

I really thought I was done with WoW. I liked MoP, but hadn't like the cata, and WoD 'housing' just didn't seem that interesting to me. A friend gifted me Legion and some time to try and hook me back, it seems to have worked for the moment. I really like what they did with the class stories. Seemed to give things a lot more replay value and well... a feeling of progress that MMOs are generally lacking. Even when Blizzard (for me anyway) drops the ball for a few years they seem to stumble across something to bring me back for at least a few months...

When people state that a publisher/developer cuts content, does one mean to say they think they did it on purpose?

I would imagine most of the complaints here come from
    ***ARRR here be spoilers!***

the last part of the game where it suddenly gets very linear very quickly and then just fast forwards in time and ends. Most of the game is just this big open world with lots going on, Insomnia is... well almost nothing. It was extremely jarring to me and seemed to come from nowhere. The game also leaves a lot unresolved.

I don't think Square cut any of this though. At no point did I get that impression. I think they just were not done with the game but were forced to shove it out the door. At least that is how it felt to me.

Still a very fun game that I enjoyed overall, but

Nice to hear! That is the impression I got from word of mouth. I snatched it up, but haven't had a chance to try it just yet.

Is that 'from' DSLReports? That link goes to James O'Keefe's 501c organization's site. It has never been anything more than a creepy ad for whatever he is currently shilling. A "story" by "staff report" indeed! I see it offers an eerie low quality banner of him, an oversized sidebar dedicated to hawking O'Keefe's new book, another section at the bottom pleading for a handout, and then reminding everyone once again about his book.

You would think with all that cash he could get someone who knows how to work Photoshop's quick select tool to do his banner, but I guess he had to pay the astroturfing spammer first. Yes, I am mostly just annoyed that I clicked the story link before reading the DSLreports forum post, but blech...

    Hows so?

The only major complaints I saw that were real were things like driver support and people buying woefully under requirement laptops from shifty OEMs. Those could just as easily have been made about XP when it came out. I was never in love with Vista, but it worked just fine.
