Leave it to MS to blow it. Just delay the launch - you've got time.

Eh screw it - viva la GameCube!

Okay, so like I never really got around to playing Half-Life and its bretheren (Counter-Strike,Day of Defeat, etc.) online, so just yesterday I fired up GameSpy. There are, of course, 15,000 Half-Life servers out there so any server browser would take a while to update them all. That's not a big deal. What is a big deal however is that after GameSpy updates them all it takes a long time to recover. This sucks.

Plus last night I was having like almost no luck getting on a Return to Castle Wolfenstein server, and GameSpy 3D obviously doesn't support that just yet, so I figured it might be neat to see what this program is like.

Wow. Takes less time to update, is quick concerning mod directories, and will actually exit in less than an hour. Makes me wish I never paid the $20 for GameSpy. Couple that with the $20 I wasted on GameLaunch and they totally ripped me off.

Having said that, GameSpy Arcade is still kickass for anything that's not a FPS. Whenever you want a game of Monopoly or Civilization II or Chess, GSA rocks.

I had heard a while back that GS is hard at work on GameSpy 3D 3.0. I hope it's better amd I'll probably give newer versions of GS3D a spin to see if they're any better, but unless TASE pisses me off I'll be floating them a $20 in the next month or so.

FilePlanet's line was 71 minutes. OK, I'll jump in line and go watch TV. 10 minutes later the wait is 147 minutes. Nevermind, I found it somewhere else.

Still that personal server plan is tempting...

Funny now that my friend who is a Resident Evil nut and a sworn Nintendo enemy will now have to invest in a GameCube.

Word is from FGN that Resident Evil 4 (Biohazard 4 in Japan) is a GameCube Exclusive. Also, they're remaking Biohazard 1 through Code Veronica as well as Biohazard 0.

That's probably why they're initially targetting non-US countries - less competition and less preconcieved notion of what a MMORPG is.

Am I the only one who is a little bit disturbed at the notion that this corny, bad Sci-Fi vehicle is not only a recent bad movie and an older set of five bad movies, but a book as well? How many crappy incarnations will it go through before people realize it's shit?

Oh, and since it's 2001 does Chuckie Heston get to have a gun this time and flail it in the air shouting "from my COLD DEAD HAND!!!" ?

I usually defend Black & White on the Blue's News forums, but I've noticed something - and this has nothing to do with Snappy per se - but it seems that the only people who post on boards like the ones at Planet Black & White are the ones who like the game and have generally constructive things to say. The only ones who post on "general" boards like the ones at Blue's and Shuga Shack are the ones who only have negative things to say or who hated game X. The ones who do like the game don't bother with forums like these.

I mean, people are complaining about Half-Life on these boards! No game has been handled better than Half-Life - they came out with tons of free add-ons for it, they came out with commerical add-ons for it of high quality, they hired gamers to make it better, they continue to make it better through patches and updates, and yet people continue to complain about it. Blue Shift isn't worth it - well then don't spend the $20 on it, they just released it as a favor anyway. They need to come out with Team Fortress 2 - so keep playing with what you've got - when TF2 comes out you'll complain that game X+1 isn't out yet. No wonder game companies don't listen to people - they'd never make them happy.

Warcraft Adventures Aug 31, 2001, 11:24
Aug 31, 2001, 11:24

Well, if you'll recall a while back Blizzard was working on a game called Warcraft Adventures, an adventure game set in the Warcraft universe using cell animation. Think King's Quest 7 or Curse of Monkey Island (the one before this latest one). They commissioned some high-dollar animation for it and even had a somewhat finished version of the game before deciding it wasn't up to their own personal standards and canning it. Now, could it be possible that this name was linked to that failed project, perhaps an original name for it?

Also recall that roughly two years ago next month (the timeframe of the domain being registered) was when Warcraft III was announced (I know because 9/8/99 is the date on this strip: http://www.penny-arcade.com/w3.shtml) and perhaps World of Warcraft was a name for it. Or perhaps WoW was to be a successor/replacement for battle.net as it pertains to W3.

Or perhaps it's to be a general Warcraft site - they're kinda pushing this "universe" ala Lord of the Rings or Wheel of Time - it's more finanically viable to convince people it's a "universe" they're partaking in.

Actually, it's not racism per se, as America has a diverse ethnic makeup. Not sure if it's cultural favoritism or what, but it's not racism.

I want a developer to say the following:

"Yes, my game is violent. Yes, my game is evil. But get this - I've done nothing illegal. Not a damn thing. I'm completely within my rights. And I've done everything in my power to keep the average purchasing age above 18. You want less violence? Keep your kids' damn hands off my game. I put a "M" rating on it, and your kids shouldn't even be able to buy it. Go through your kids' room right now. Kick them out and inspect it. Privacy? Fuck that - they're under 18 they have no privacy. If you see my game in your kids' shit, send it to me in the mail and I'll send you your money back (it was your money to begin with remember). With your help, I'll do everything in my power to keep my game out of your kids hands, and I don't want to hear one more goddamn thing about my game causing violence. Deal?"

Yeah I caught that interview and I've also read others that said that the designers hated working on it - by that point the bean counters were calling the shots and they wanted something licensed. The problem of course is that if you follow the plot of the book/movie you're dealing with in an adventure game then you're limiting the gameplay. If you don't follow it, then your game has little to do with the property you've licensed.

This is why the successful Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy followed the plot for a few pages and took a hard left.

I read in a mag that Microsoft cut support for several Java/Netscape stuff

While it is true that they have cut support for Netscape style [embed] tags, they were never an HTML convention and thus their inclusion has never been required for W3C compatibility.

The deal with Java is that it won't ship with Windows XP and it won't be preloaded on OEM computers. If you do a web install you're in control of what you get from MS, but when you fire up a new PC with XP it won't have the JVM by default. When you get to a page that needs it then IE6 asks if you want to install it.

The worry for Sun is that the users of the world when they get to the "shock the monkey" ad and IE6 asks them if they want to install Java they'll say "5MB? No way." This will make developers not want to write Java programs since they can't assume that the end user will have Java anymore. Sun is making a new IE6 enhanced Java (the one you can download is an old one due to legal tussles) but obviously few people will download and use it.

Yeah, games licensed from books always work, just look at Shogun: http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?name=James+Clavell%27s+Shogun

Better yet, don't.

Actually, there have been some, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comes to mind. And if you didn't mind the merely brief references, Wheel of Time wasn't bad, either.
