So it's "III" but it's a Prequel. Erm, what will "IV" be, even earlier, or even later, or earlier than "I" but later than "III".

Myth Zero would have been better

Actually, pics on the main page are a good idea IMHO. Too often times I gloss over stories on games and such and only later do I accidentally see what they look like. "How did I miss this?" Simple - you got jaded to Blue's News.

Lets all hark back to the days of mosaic pre v1. Shocking

I prefer to think of it as a simplistic style

I just thought it was funny that they want to charge $70 for something that can literally be had better for free. But hey, if people want to fork over that much money to make something that SA will just make fun of later, that's their right. I just figured it was worthwile to inform BN readers, most of which are capable of "understanding it" that there's better alternatives out there.

All that's unneccessary. The Quake 1 engine is free now under the GPL (and only $10K if you don't want to do GPL) and the Torque Engine (formerly V12) from GarageGames.com is only $100 - using the latest Tribes 2 engine (the caveat being any game commerically released must be sold through GG.com or optionally through Sierra).

And even if those don't churn your butter there's always the tons of free 3D engines like CrytsalSpace or Genesis3D. This makes the $70 GCS look like a ripoff. When they tell you you can make a game "with no programming" that's a clue - think "Make money on the Internet - and you don't even have to know a thing about computers!" on late night Infomercials.

Get you shitty game skills on!

Seriously, this game engine has only ever been used by people making shitty games, usually Biblical ones.

man, so many purchases, Geforce 3, Civ3, mobo, proc, so little time...

simple - buy Civ3 - it's system requirements are so low it will make those other items unneccessary.

I am interested to see how it fares - Civ2 had the unfortunate fate of being a Windows game in the pre-DirectX era and it still fared very well. Nowadays, though, we're all graphics whores. Sure SMAC had good graphics and such but it was still minimalist, as Civ3 will be. It will be interesting to see if people will still like a mostly "game" game.

Well, look at the bright side - there's always a patch. Yes, relying on patches sucks, but it's better than nothing.

And have you ever played Civ2 online? Great idea, boring as hell in execution waiting on everyone. I can wait for Civ3 online play, no problem.

Pay attention! Scurry on to your local EB or Babbage's and plunk down $10 to reserve your collector's tin (they've sold like 75,000 so far).

I'm not sure about Ultimate Quake Collection but there is a collection called Final Quake: BFG here: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=207957 with all 3 Quake games, and a title called Quake III: Gold Edition here: http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/categories/products/product.asp?pf_id=207955 with Quake III: Arena and Quake III: Team Arena. I would imagine Ultimate Quake Collection would just be a mis-named version of the first one, but I dunno.

Jezus that's a lot of games - I guess it's not that difficult to add support for one.

cool, thanks, but how disappointing. I was hoping Cocoa was some failed Apple knock-off they wanted to port a game to. Kinda like when they ported Quake to the Amiga.

Schnapple

Edit: I realize no one's going to believe me, and it looks like id didn't port Quake themselves, someone named Clickboom did:

Well, considering that EBWorld and other stores have already stopped accepting pre-orders, I think that many, many people will be buying one

No, that just means that they've already sold X amount of preorders and they don't want to take any more since they're not sure if they'll get more, or even if they'll get their X amount now.

Furthermore, we don't know what number X is. X could be 200,000 XBoxes allocated to amazon.com and ebgames.com each. X could be 50 XBoxes. The fact that they won't discuss/divulge how many they presold is telling...
