The ironic thing is that the shooter was an adult.

Hey, maybe there's a silver lining after all! That's our out - he was an adult! Sorry, but once you hit 18 (in the US anyway) you're an adult. Take your "corrupting the youth" argument and shove it.

Oh, and thanks for the clarification #7 - I'm obviously guessing about German culture.

But as for the crack about George W., ever notice how all of the bad USA School Shootings happened under the Clinton administration?

...nevermind that this is Germany where sales of games are restricted to minors, guns are restricted like crazy, even to hunters, and they balk at games like RtCW. Not to mention they tend to ban things like Scientology. German culture is already ultra-restrictive (except for beer and speed limits) and still Bad Things happen. To me this says Bad Things will happen anyway, no matter what kids play/listen to/watch/read.

Conversely, though, restricting games can only go so far. Kids can't download an ISO image of the beer you won't let them drink.

Does this one have one of those "X-Mouse" dealies? That one's always been hell.

I have the previous version. If you use Alt-Tab religiously, don't install the Alt-Tab replacement one. It slows down the Alt-Tab thing immensely and its supposed benefit (a thumbnail of what you're Alt-Tab-bing to) doesn't even work half the time. Not a bad idea, just not a good one.

Considering that Ion Storm Dallas is closed, I'm not surprised.

Really though, despite the fact that I've heard/read that Ion Storm Austin was going to change their name, I think they should keep the name - it would be a more impressive feat to continue to have success despite the name.

Dude just hand the next Matrix game to 3D Realms/Rockstar - they proved themselves with the bullet time thing with Max Payne.

This is uncompiled code so it can be modified by anyone

Good choice. Remember - when releasing source code always choose uncompiled source code.

$47? Hell, I could have bought Shiny. That's less than I paid for Jedi Outcast. Shiny was probably for sale at Wal-Mart. I'd much rather own a game developer than another game.

I know basically nil about EQ (MMORPG = evil!) but does it make sense to anyone else to never have an "EQ 2" just do a shadows of lucin-style "expansion" every so often and drag the people into upgrades with you? All the joy of a high brow "sequel" without having to say "fuck you" to everyone who bought the game before.

Depends on what you mean by mods. If you mean "different maps", yes there are some and there will soon be more. If you mean "different gameplay" then no (AFAIK) since the source hasn't been released yet.

Except that GT2 and maybe GTA1 (never played) had multiplayer in it

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the development crew did not use any of the code from previous GTA games in GTA3. I remember the buildings in the previous two installments were 3-D polygonal, but I don't remember if the cars themselves were sprites.

There have been cases (Alice comes to mind) where a developer takes an engine perfectly capable of multiplayer (or in the case of the Quake 3 engine, geared towards it) and ships a game with no multiplayer. This means they purposely disabled the multiplayer code or, possibly more drastically, ripped it out entirely.

GTA3 however didn't use the GTA1/2 engine and rip part of it out, it was rewritten from scratch. Ergo, it doesn't matter what the previous installments had, this one doesn't have multiplayer. Quake 1 & 2 had single player elements - it didn't mean that Quake 3 had to.

..."Nickname" was a required field. mmm...k? I just copied my username (Schnapple) again.

Then, "Address Line 2" was required. mmmmm...huh? Not everyone has a complicated address - some of us just live in a house on a street. I hope "(n/a)" doesn't set them off or something.

Probably because while no multiplayer docks them some points on reviews, a shitty multiplayer option costs them more. A shitty out of the box multiplayer option does nothing for them but a shitty multiplayer option as a free download is easier to not support (which they would have to do if it came in the box).

Really though, why must every game have a multiplayer option? I mean, all people would do is play GTA3 CTF, what's the point? I mean how would GTA MP work, cops vs. criminals? (Actually that's not a horrible idea - off to work on that mod for game X)

I was just going to say... with the rumors of an Indy movie reissue and the DVD's reportedly being worked on, how hard would it be for Lucasarts reposition this game to be an Indy game.

Somewhat telling that I completely forgot about/ignored Messiah and Sacrifice - anything after MDK 2 in other words.

No offense, but you do realize Shiny was a developer, not a game. They developed the Earthworm Jim and MDK series of games and were working on a Matrix game but "Shiny" wasn't a game itself.

...that this game is available a Best Buy (or is supposed to be) for $49.99 for PS2, NGC and XBox but the PC port (which IGN says has excellent graphics and everything) is $19.99. It either says that the port is shovelware or that Best Buy doesn't have confidence that it will sell. I wonder if that's because console ports to the PC never sell or if it's because of that Kellog's thing.

I wonder who makes my cereal...

There's always BROWSCAP.INI:

http://www.cyscape.com/browscap/

Not sure if it works w/o ASP, but it identifies Opera even when Opera spoofs itself. Click the "live demo" for proof.

Well for IE6 the logo is fine on the front page but split on the posting pages. The opposite of the Netscape 4.78 behavior, in other words.

On a side note, I've been laying out Web Forms with VisualStudio.NET and ASP.NET and the .NET framework fixes just this sort of thing. You lay out the web page how you like it and the DHTML neccessary to render it properly is done server-side. My layouts work identically in Opera, Netscape, Mozilla and IE whatever. It's hella cool.
