I assume you mean the expansion. They got shot down on releasing that through their publisher a long time ago, saying that down the line a piece it might be in a reissued package of the original GalCiv.

Good to see GalCiv did good enough to merit reprinting.

Dumped because no publisher wanted it, i think.

I think it's really been "shelved" for the time being.

If memory serves, there was going to be an Alice movie, then OZ was announced, then it was announced there was going to be an OZ movie, too.

Then the Alice movie got cancelled. Then the OZ game got shelved for that no publisher reason you mentioned. Now the OZ movie is going forward and if the OZ game ever comes off the shelf it will be in the form of a game for the movie inspired by the game that never got off the ground.

Confusing, eh?

And why in the hell would you come out with a game right now? HL2, Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2, GTA:SA, EQ2 etc. Not enough money or time in the world to buy them all...

Well all have DVD drives, except for that one dude - and the publishers are scared he won't be able to buy their games.

The whole point of playing an MMORPG is to continue to exist. You know, build your character, etc.

Seems to me the point of a space shooter is to cause everyone else not to exist. And dogfighting is more death prone.

So how does JTL work? Is it hard to get killed in your X-Wing? If it's not, then what happens when you die? I presume you don't respawn quickly, ala X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter

I've actually seen a lot of id-inspired tattoos. Quake logos, "BFG", etc. I don't think he was implying that people need to go run out and get tattoos for this contest. Anyone who would probably already owns DOOM 3.

I guess it was the word "inept" made it come across as an insult. And quite frankly in most places commenting isn't so bad (Shacknews is quite fond of developers) but for some reason, Blue's News comment forums are basically cesspools.

(no one in here of course;))

Can you tell us what you're working on?

Nothing worth mentioning at the moment - not on a team or working on anything specific. I just meant that I had licensed the engine.

I'm a little bit curious if there's a predisposition to hate Torque games (like the way Lithtech games used to suffer)

yuck, torque.

as a Torque developer I ask - what makes you say that? The lack of AAA Torque titles (a valid point), the dated graphics (being addressed, somewhat, with the new shader engine), or something else?

It is like that because the inept person who made the design document (Not me) did not know how to spell and the like.

You are the developer and you are lambasting someone on your own team? Not good form. You can ask id and Ion Storm what happens next.

If you really believe this wont make it, strip naked and put yourself on a silver platter ready to be devoured on the day of the zombie apoclypse

I'm not sure if this is a troll, a joke (in the vein of the game's plot) or what but it doesn't really bode well for you or the game.

I'm also a Torque developer and I hope your game gets far enough to ship, but there's a reason that game developers almost never comment on message boards and the Carmacks of the world only post to Slashdot once in a blue moon - you open yourself up for tons of criticism.

Also - I heard these games are done in Java. It would make sense if they were trying to ship Mac, PC, Linux, etc. on the same disc, but then I see that it's PC CD-ROM only.

If true, it seems like a little bit of a wasted opportunity, except that Mac isn't much of a market and Linux folks probably don't care for it.

Still, wouldn't Sun be jumping on the fact that Java powered a mass-market 3D engine game that few people are complaining about being able to run?

"Doom 3 of Space titles"? WHat the fuck is that?

I'm sure they meant that it's highly anticipated, like DOOM 3 was. Of course, DOOM 3 didn't have two name changes and get cancelled twice.

kinda off topic - anyone find it odd that the takeover ads and banners, etc. are all for DOOM 3? How many people coming to Blue's News need convincing to buy the game? How many Blue's News people who haven't bought it would be convinced by an ad?

I find it interesting that neither of the Kill Bill movies did well in the box office (first one did alright, second one didn't do nearly as well) but they sell truckloads on DVD. Even Blue, who appears to be a Tarantino fan, didn't see the second one until last night.

This makes me wonder - are we entering the phase where the theatrical release is irrelevant? Do people really want to own their movies rather than just pay to watch them?

I remember Rick Callum saying he hoped they could get all the Star Wars movies out before people decided they didn't want to go to the theater anymore and they just wanted to buy their movies on DVD like they do (did) with CD's. I thought he was crazy - maybe not so crazy.

And how is it that people will happily buy DVD's and pirate CD's in the form of MP3's?

The truth is that except for a lower resolution there really isn't any major visual differences between the Xbox port of Doom 3 and the recently released PC version

I'm not sure if they're fanboys, if trying to be nice, or if they've just got honest differences of opinion with me, but I was at QuakeCon, I played and watched DOOM 3 on the Xbox, ant it's a lot different than the PC version. Lower poly models, lower framerate than a high end PC, poorer shadows, etc. I have a bottom-rung PC (GF3 Ti200) and it looks better on my system than it did on the Xbox (though granted, the Xbox version has a much steadier framerate than my system).

Now this isn't to say that DOOM 3 on the Xbox is bad - they've actually done a pretty good job. But to say that there's no major differences when people are playing it on high end systems in the same room is just mistaken.

Actually, something occured to me.

Let's say you're a lawyer. You represent a client who is a woman that has been raped. You lose the case.

Your next client is also a woman who has been raped. You lose the case.

It could be that you're not a good lawyer, but it could also be that you happened to have a couple of bad cases.

A third woman who got raped presents herself as a client. Do you reject her as a client because you haven't won any rape cases and there's no point to taking one? Perhaps you would if you thought you were no good at rape cases, but otherwise you'd take the client because it's your belief that there are a bunch of rapists out there that need to be stopped and someone has to fight for the victims.

That's what this Jack Thompson character is. He believes that these video game makers are like rapists (ok, maybe not that bad and they need to be stopped. That's why he keeps fighting - he's trying to fight for a cause.

The flaw in this however is that there's yet to be proof that video games are responsible for murders (whereas it has been proven that rapists are responsible for rapes). This case is particularly bad - the killer wasn't even the one who owned the game - but he's going to go after it anyway. He believes he's on a crusade and these game makers must be stopped at any price.

At this point I'm not sure what to do - I don't think calm, rational explanations (or facts) will stop this man. I also realize that the relentless lambasting that people do on boards like this won't help either. Perhaps the ultimate result will be that, if he's ever successful, then more video game makers will take care with what they put in games.

that lawyer thinks he smells money from an easy, out of court settlement..

makes sense - but as far as I can tell he's never had one of those. The judge calls bullshit and tosses it out before it gets far enough to consider going to trial.

Unless I'm missing something.
