God knows there aren't enough "me, too" products on the market with SW licensing.
IMHO, Star Wars licensing has been in "version of" syndrome all along. X-Wing
and its bretheren were their version of dogfigting flight sims, Dark Forces
was their version of a FPS, Rebellion
was their version of Master of Orion
, Rebel Assault
was their version of a rail shooter, Force Commander
was their version of a 3D RTS, Galactic Battlegrounds
was their version of a 2D RTS, etc. To me, the Star Wars license has never been original, they've always taken existing formulas and dropped in their properties.
But yeah, lately they have been more guilty of the "drop in and go" syndrome. Like when they did Demolition
, which was Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense
with SW characters, which wasn't a very good game to begin with. Galactic Battlegrounds
might as well have been an Age of Empires
mod, but it worked anyway. If they do Battlefield 1942
with Star Wars characters, it could work. After all, a bunch of amateurs did Battlefield 1942
with US/Iraqi conflict characters and it worked.
Besides - think of blowing away the Jar Jar bots over and over.
