Sounds like id isn't exactly the happiest place to be working...
From what I understand, id is a pretty hardcore place. It's kinda viscious but for those that can "hang" it's a pretty cool place. I mean, this is the place that fired Paul Steed more or less out of spite. This is the place where people would kill to work, but yet there's people there who quit. I'm sure that the people who work there and don't quit are quite happy - but it is a pretty psycho environment.

Plus, remember, this (Blue's News) was originally a Quake-only site (Blue's Quake Rag), so it's only fitting that anything id Software related would recieve attention - right down to Carmack's Slashdot posts.

And I for one am all for it!

yeah but in base-10 or base-2 numbers?

So long as it keeps fitting on a CD I don't care.

Interplay will be gone soon enough.

This is what's really going on. It's not that they're purposely making decisions that make no sense - it's that they're getting rid of things in a desparate attempt to stay afloat, and one that they know will not work anyway. I guess they figure it's best to toss things aside to try and stay afloat longer than it is to press ahead full steam and have the company go down in one fell swoop.

Someone remind me again why having a publisher is a "good thing"...?
  • Because self-publishing doesn't work
  • Because developers have to eat and publishers pay advances
  • Because developers make good game creators/designers and not-so-good distributors
  • Because that's how the market works

And as for the idea of self publishing over the Internet - that's been tried many many times. People don't want that. They want to go to a store and buy a game on a CD. Hell, look at the outcry over Steam.

Look like DoomWorld got taken down. When Slashdot kills something, it's Slashdotted. When Fark taked something down, it's Farked. So, when Blue takes something down, is it Blued? Did it get a Blue Job?

or free downloads of the original Doom

Well given that id Software still charges for Commander Keen on their website, free games from them are unlikely. Besides it's not like everyone doesn't already have DOOM (or can't get it).

But hey, they were the ones who started the whole "give away source code" trend, so it's not like anyone's going to get mad about them being stingy.

Something bad is happening to the industry if an established studio with an established franchise can't find a single publisher

I hate to nitpick, but I don't think one game constitutes a "franchise". I know people refer to Half-Life as a franchise but that's because the (eventual) release of the second game is a given.

...SiN shipped with horrible bugs and issues and had the misfortune of being a "meh" game issued slightly before Half-Life dropped. I've heard of people with psychotic devotion to the game, but I never really got into it myself. Certianly not what I expected from the folks who gave us Scourge of Armagon.

I seem to recall an interview where Levelord refused to discuss SiN, saying only something like "it broke my heart".

I think the reason they can't entice a publisher is less because of the "sorry state of today's game market" and more because the game simply didn't sell very well. Had Half-Life not shipped right after it might be a different story, but here we are.

I didn't get Undrentide (although I likely will someday) but I'd really like to play Underdark
I'm pretty sure you don't need to have Undrentide to play Underdark.

God knows there aren't enough "me, too" products on the market with SW licensing.

IMHO, Star Wars licensing has been in "version of" syndrome all along. X-Wing and its bretheren were their version of dogfigting flight sims, Dark Forces was their version of a FPS, Rebellion was their version of Master of Orion, Rebel Assault was their version of a rail shooter, Force Commander was their version of a 3D RTS, Galactic Battlegrounds was their version of a 2D RTS, etc. To me, the Star Wars license has never been original, they've always taken existing formulas and dropped in their properties.

But yeah, lately they have been more guilty of the "drop in and go" syndrome. Like when they did Demolition, which was Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense with SW characters, which wasn't a very good game to begin with. Galactic Battlegrounds might as well have been an Age of Empires mod, but it worked anyway. If they do Battlefield 1942 with Star Wars characters, it could work. After all, a bunch of amateurs did Battlefield 1942 with US/Iraqi conflict characters and it worked.

Besides - think of blowing away the Jar Jar bots over and over.

On the list, you have to remember a few things.

First off we're talking about Rolling Stone magazine here. Personally, I think a lot of today's music is crap, so I tend to like what I used to listen to in high school. RS has been around for thirty years so look at what they rate high - stuff that was out towards the beginning of their run.

By that logic a lot of the people who will complain about group X not being on the list - you're rating it based on what you've heard and most of the target audience here isn't that old.

Also realize that every list like this will rate Beatles at #1. And the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Elvis, et al towards the top (which the entire list is sorta "towards the top"). Any artist you deem worthy now is got a long way to go before they can be considered in the running.

And finally, being RS, if they did this list a hundred years from now, Sgt. Pepper's will still be at #1. Which is odd, because I've tried to listen to that album and I can't stand it. Or anything Beatles. Oh well.

Not usually, but there's a perception that if you buy a game extremely late then you've missed the boat - so a "Gold" package makes the late comers feel better - and cuts them a deal to boot.

Any bets on whether they repackage NWN plus the two expansions and call it "NWN Platinum"?

My Local EBGames says tomorrow. (I prepaid)
One thing - when I worked at Babbage's (GameStop) we always told people the next day since it always came in at an inconsistent hour and we didn't want to turn disappointed people away, so I'd say call them about 7 or 8 (presuming they close at 9) to check again.

why dont these games plan ahead and include bots?
I don't know if CoD has Bots, but given that their AI good/bad guys have top notch AI, I would imagine that the game has bots since it would be trivial to do so. Either that or play it in single player mode and pretend you're playing multiplayer.

If you buy a mahogony chess board, do you bitch and moan that it doesnt include a mechanical arm to play against
If you had a mechanical arm, I don't think you'd be playing Chess with it.
