I remember playing the Half-Life: Day One leak (thanks Creative Labs!) the night it hit the net. I was completely glued to my monitor.
When the biggest 3d games you had played up to that point were Quake, System Shock and Sin.. HL was on another level entirely.

Guess I've got 3 weeks of resisting a deluge of HL:A previews to weather. After the 3 locomotion vids I'm g2g on needing to see any more of it.
And in all this time you still dance around the scenario which illustrates the point. There is no app called Half-Life Alyx yet. Which leads to > No one knows the effect it will have on the market once it's an actual product.
If it flops, how can it be considered VR's killer app? Or is killer app just a fluid, app of the week like term to throw around, as Beamet suggested you're doing?
To be clear, I highly suspect it will take the crown, but that's beside the point. Unreleased products can even be canceled. How would such a thing hold the title?

A launched product isn't what identifies a product as a killer app. The only condition is "any computer program that is so necessary or desirable that it proves the core value of some larger technology, such as computer hardware." The fact the Index sold out last year, and numerous other VR devices had their sales boosted, and the fact that Valve warns the device will likely sell out on Monday is PROOF it remains a killer app.
And if it flops? "Half-Life: Alyx, the killer app no one owned, that was a killer app till someone was able to run it, which then tanked the VR market is THE killer app for VR!"
That makes sense.
Edit: BTW, I've seen more than one recent article, not just the one I quoted in that thread, refer to HL:A as a *possible* killer app. Not one yet.

None the less, my post was more about the general tone in this thread.
I've had the same theory as KX (for once). HL3 is just as synonymous with Valve as Steam is. A flop would hurt the Valve brand, which would thus hurt Steam indirectly.
Which ever way HL:A swings it's experimental, so it's all good. If it's a hit it will then *cough* likely be VR's killer app. If it flops, well everyone will just admit at least they tried to make a true AAA VR title.
