Really? Then why is no one able to reproduce their numbers? And why has the Yankee Group pulled their report?

Could you cite a reference to their methodology ("poll the entire community")? Lots of people are trying to figure out what they did. It would be great to see some facts for a change.

Anyway, the point here is that a report with no (lasting) credibility is itself being hyped... including here on Blue's. This isn't about whether SL is worth a damn; it's about all the reports that come out from so-called experts that too few people question.

fyi - the Yankee Group pulled the report. Their numbers were so extraordinarily wrong people may no longer pay attention to what they report. Better off using the Guardian's numbers (and reading what they say): http://media.guardian.co.uk/newmedia/story/0,,2176765,00.html

Does it really matter if he's right or wrong? If id or any game dev believes they're being hurt, aren't they going to react based on what they *believe*?

When the company that arguably best embodies the idea of open source in the game community decides to move to consoles because they believe PC's are too much trouble for the perceived risk, then that would seem to be all that matters.
