"But it has all the patches, I just want to drop the game in and play without having to download all kinds of stuff..."

Uh...heheeh, ok then. You're in for a surprise.

This particular point is a tad flawed.... although, to be fair..... only by nearly every single piece of business, productivity, educational, entertainment and gaming software ever released for the pc...

Depends on the country he's in...... it was like $99.00 here... and, including postage and card fee, my gold pack ended up $180.00....

I'd not bet my left nad on it, but I'm pretty sure the CE edition allowed you to DL DOD when it became available. I think, NOT SURE, that this was addressed by Valve themselves prior to HL2 being available.
I don't give a toss either way, I have the Steam Gold Pack and about as likely to play DOD, as I am to push a pea up Rushmore with my nose....;P However, I'd wait until it becomes an issue, or search blues for news on HL2 Gold, Silver and CE editions before getting my panties in a twist over it...

Okay, I can live with there being a 'Low Violence' option.... but I tell you, there better be a 'High Violence' patch on the way, too. Something to make up for the fact I've seen nothing about a SOF3....

I don't give much of a toss either way. If something doesn't have single player content, then I care. Still, I do like playing with the tools and making maps and DM is a pretty simple way for me to toy with something I made, so I tend to appreciate it being there.

I'm probably not totally accurate here, but I'm sure I read in a Croteam interview the other day that, there's something like 2 hours of cutscenes.... Some bizarre amount, in any event..

So, I'm guessing no time for making DM, or no space left on their media to fit it, after all those cutscenes....

Raven's penchant for turning out cookie cutters, albeit good ones, was my biggest concern for Quake 4... However, what I've seen thus far has me looking forward to it. Still, I'd rather they turned their attentions to SOF3 and make it a tad more bloody and violent this time around;P

I'm leaving my next major upgrade for Prey, so I'm hoping it and Quake4 come close together... Human Head are mostly Ex Raven guys, I think, so will be interesting to see who made the most of the D3 engine, too... Has to be some competitive spirit there, somewhere, surely:)

If it runs as well as DooM3 did for me, I'll be overjoyed. No problems here.

That post about maxing everything on an XP 1800 had me curious, well, skeptical...

Anyway, I just played through the demo again and this time I maxed everything out..... even turned on soft shadows and fsaa...

Before I was wondering why people said it was dark, even wondered why my character bothered having a flashlight.... With everything maxed out, now I see why.... That makes the game DARK! Also, with everything maxed out, that room with the lights and ladders no longer kills my system. It plays about the same, except the particle effects in the firefights slow it a bit.

Still, for the overall look....and it's improved markedly with everything maxed out, I don't think it performs too well. But a must have game, nevertheless.

Once I got down the ladders and into the office, it improved. I'm guessing it has to be the lighting between the ladders and windows killing it. But kill it, it does.... I'm glad I didn't have to fight anyone in that area!

I've got XP 2800/256MB FX5700/1GB RAM. I'm not really inclined to go the big upgrade yet. I could go an XP 3200, another 512MB RAM and ATI X800 Pro.... all those bits are on special locally for me. But, I'd want to be seeing some massive improvement to bother.

Hmmm.... I'll buy it for sure.... but I'm going to feel cheated cause, if that yellow Mop Cart isn't the exact same one used in Nolf 2, I'll stand stuffed!...

It's a less than stellar implementation of physics.... Enemies fall at odd angles and then start rap dancing in an attempt to straighten themselves out... That blue room with all the lights and the ladders, where you see the little girl and then Paxton.... that just brought my machine to it's knees and I considered it unplayable.

I can play DooM3 and HL2 with everything maxed out, no problems at all. FEAR is killing me at 640x480 with most of it's settings turned down. So, in a nutshell, I don't give a flying feck what this engine has that's new.... cause I can't see it with everything down. As for the physics slowing it down, doesn't this use Havoc like Half Life2?

They made exactly what they wanted for the European version, so get that one. It's not been fucked up by anyone. The US edition been changed to suit US regulations. This is done in other countries, too, btw.

Is that the same 184MB Prey video from a few months back, or a new one?.... That video was awesome!...

You can get French Doggy Perfume to keep the dogs from smelling..... erm.... like dogs.... It's called 'Oh My Dog' and smells a lot like some crap the better half likes called Truth.... Anyways, smells much better than dog!
