Hello, community of Blizzard! My name is Makaiya Brown. I have been helping a Blizzards with diversity, equity, and inclusion since October 2021. When International Women’s Day is coming up, I thought what better time would I share some thoughts on this role and how our work at Blizzard is progressing so far.

First, the obvious question: why Blizzard is? When I met people here, things struck me. First, the ability and commitment to produce meaningful change from employees to employees are all exceptionally talented people who want to do something better than their own. And second, the real commitment from the nixty-sixth-generation team, who are spearheading change around the board to ensure their teams feel safe, heard, and can be their best, creative selves. It’s rare to see a continuous, overwhelming effort at all levels and that energy that inspires me as my work progresses.

Because we want to make games welcoming to everyone, we need many perspectives. When women, people of color, LGBT+ or people who are differently-abled feeling Blizzard is a place for thema place where they are their best selves acquire valuable perspectives. A culture with more inclusive culture is excellent, period.

The most important pillar of lasting change is education; and I realize that for some people, education around DE&I subjects is uncomfortable. Everybody has biases based on multiple influences like the fact that we grew up, who we grew up around, what kind of media we used to consume. In the workplace, these biases manifest to particular extents. In the past, while you can experiment with the same people. As opposed to the same thing and try to do something different, the behaviors can also be unintentionally offensive, or cause some people to think about sharing ideas. Recognizing these biases is reasonable and important to personal, professional, and organizational development.

Everything starts with listening. For the future of Blizzard, it’s important to understand the past. Once we have a clear picture of where we are, we can make significant changes on our way towards the future. We’ve already started to build a strong learning platform, a system for actionable leadership accountability, reworking our recruiting practices and more.

A lot of development teams recently made significant progress in representation, accessibility and player behavior. And this year, three-quarters of our new hires do not fully self-declared as women. We are grateful for the efforts of individuals and teams who have immediately embraced our goal of improving diversity in Blizzard, and we’re committed to continuing to focus on this area.

As a leader in the agency and management, seeing such a sort of action from individuals en masse in their domains of influence is very exciting. That’s the kind of work that adds to real change. While the work at Blizzard isn’t a business matter, and it’s not just a small effort that goes on so far a business and team and individuals. That’s a large effort that goes on to be accomplished and evolve to be fully incorporated.

People from all backgrounds would like to create and play games to escape The extrastudos exist enough discrimination in the outside, and in all corners, everyone should feel welcomed here and in our universe. We’ve got much to do. I hope building a more inclusive workplace, as well as more inclusive games, will have a greater impact on understanding, care and appreciation of people who we think are different from us. And even if we continue to create better spaces for the gaming world, then the real world becomes better.
