I'd agree they're not strictly games in the traditional sense, but second jobs? WoW is just a great place to chill out with your mates, play in a virtual playground, fight a few arena games and all that.

My avatar isn't more interesting than me because my avatar isn't the one typing in chat or communicating on ventrilo.

I don't play the Sims but I can hardly imagine those that play it consider it a second job.

For those of you who remember the golden days of the Amiga, you might recall Sensible Software (creators of Sensible Soccer, Cannon Fodder etc) blaming piracy for the imminent death of the platform, shortly before they abandoned it and the whole platform died (beyond a minority of die hards).

I recall one of the writers or editors at Amiga Power (a UK Amiga gaming magazine -"With an Attitude!") lamenting how the industry (publishers, the gaming press, developers etc) all believed the Amiga was dying because of issues like piracy, modern consoles, etc. I don't remember his name but this guy suggested that the death of the Amiga was a self-fulfilling prophecy because everyone decided it was dying.

Had development and innovation continued, the Amiga might still be around today? Who knows?

Despite that, PC gaming isn't going to die because as long as everyone in the western world has a PC and wants to write e-mails, type letters, order things online and stuff, they will want to play games on it to.

I think the worst that will happen is that PC gaming will become terribly unfashionable for a decade or so, compared to the trendy consoles. And personally I regard that as no bad thing.

Bilbo: I don't agree with your opinion - and your opinion is all that you have given. If you were being completely objective, you would not make statements such a 'WoW is a piece of crap', but I fear that this is an ability you are unable or unwilling to engage on when moaning about stuff you have little clue about.

Yes! Lets blame Blizzard for 'ruining' the PC gaming market, Bilbo. They must be to blame for this terrible tragedy. How dare they release a game that sells lots of boxes, wins countless accolades and is on top PC gaming lists everywhere.

What a 'piece of crap'.

Idiot.

It amuses me that people label WoW as an "MMO-lite", and other such nonsense. These are nothing more but misguided stabs from a vocal minority of jaded burn-out cases. These nutcases are deluded into thinking that other MMOs are deeper simply because these games dilute their content with more time.

And I find the fact that Vanguard - champion of this pretentious campaign of nostalgia from so-called mature gamers - is an abysmal failure to be delightfully entertaining.

World of Warcraft has made the old-school MMO obselete, and not because of false claims that it has dumbed down the genre, but because it genuinely offers more and relies less on time-sink tricks of old.

Of course there's still grinding in WoW. Grind is synonymous with MMORPG, or even RPG. Killing 20 generic goblins to get a generic crystal to buff your generic armor in Oblivion isn't something I would call deep, or hardcore, or whatever else nerds like to masturbate over.

Thank fuck games like Vanguard are failing, hopefully the people behind these guys will be forced into bankrupcy and will never be seen trying to make games again.

I played this game for 5 years - constantly - before finally burning out.

It's a wonderful game - if you can get past the massively steep learning curve and don't mind being regarded as a newbie for say... oh... 3 years.. before you finally master the thing.

I was a raid and guild leader, and had the most amazing gaming experience of my life. But it's a pretty old game now - despite the updates, it's a bit rickety.

I think it will be difficult for new players to get into this one, especially since newer MMOs have much friendlier learning curves, better graphics, and more casual-friendly content.

It's called Everquest for a reason.
