Not at all surprised about the burner phones thing. Why mess with encryption when you can easily exploit an existing weakness in the system?

Honestly I don't think burner phones should even be legal. If you use the communications infrastructure you should be required to provide valid proof of who you are. My opinion.

It's easy for people like that to get fake IDs or a supply of burners from other places where ID would be an issue.

I always wondered why Michael O'Hare left Babylon 5 after the first season. I thought Bruce Boxleitner was fine, but for me O'Hare was the heart of the show, able to embody so well the combination of leadership and compassion tinged with just a touch of PTSD that was Jeff Sinclair. Yes the story really starts taking off in season 2, but that first season had such an impact on me when I first saw it, and I credit his leadership and performance with that.

Can't say I was ever a fan of the show but I can empathize. Here's an interview with the exec producer....

J. Michael Straczynski on Michael O'Hare's battle with mental illness

That was damn decent of Mr. Straczynski. Poor guy.

What? Why the fuck would you do that??? 10% is a fucking joke, as is the entire architecture of your console, Microsoft.

Yeah, I know right. How about I give you 10% as a brokerage fee and that's still fucking generous.

You guys are missing the point. The question isn't "why would anyone want to play those old games?" The question is, for those who do wish to play or study them, how can we ensure that they remain available? In many cases, the hardware to run these older games no longer exists, so emulation is the only way to make them available. Publishers sue for copyright infringement, but then don't make older games available for purchase. What's the solution?

This is yet another issue caused by our ridiculous copyright system. If copyright was say 15 or 20 years, then we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I dunno if Cutter put them off track or if they all just have terrible critical reading skills.

When in doubt I always use the reliable and somewhat redundant Cutter's Razor. "The easiest explanation is that it's Cutter's fault."

Yeah, fuck man, it's harsh tokes being me.

Modern gaming is mostly flash little substance with a few gems here and there.

And that's what most entertainment is, a diversion. What else is it supposed to be? I don't game to get educated, I game for an escape. Same thing with music and film. I want to learn I watch a documentary or read a book. Going from MUDs to Everquest was fucking awesome! It wsa what most PnPers and MUDers had been dreaming about for years.

Get a grip! It's not the same thing. Games were limited in what they could create and show given hardware limitations. Early gamers always dreamed of bigger and better in the same way silent film makers dreamed of talkies in colour. As someone who played text based DOOR games and MUDs for years I used to dream of a fully realized 3D game world to run around in. They were enjoyable sure, but I still wanted to move onward and upward in terms of both gameplay and graphic fidelity. A colour film from the 80s isn't much different from the 50s in terms of technology. Games are worlds apart. It's got nothing to do with demonizing anything and people just wanting to move on up to that deluxe apartment in the sky like the Jeffersons.

It's called ROI. How much money is there to be made refurbishing old games? Some no doubt but enough to make it worthwhile? GOG gets by sure, but they also have new games. And how many GOGs could be sustainable?

Pretty sure a lot of it comes down to economies of scale - try to resurrect a couple games through emulation, you're probably never seeing your money back. A couple dozen? Maybe. A couple hundred? Now you're at least getting into the conversation - after all, if you only have to develop (or license) the emulation tech once for each class of hardware, getting to market with as much as is humanly possible seems a near-requirement in terms of making anything like that happen in an economically-viable way.

I'd really love to know just how much GOG makes on those games. Even all these old titles have to be licensed. And the demand ain't gonna' be that high. I'm thinking razor thin profit margins at best.

Cool he solved that. Wish I was a maths guy. Particularly so I could say when people ask, 'Oh, I'm a maths guy.' Because people like saying maths.

Google is evil. No shit. Unfortunately they're the only guys with a decent search engine. I tried Duck but it sucks. And the rest of them are just as evil and way shittier, so what's a brother to do?

And yet again we corporations need to spend serious money on security but choose not to.
