Wow. I'm against torrenting movies but this seems almost Orwellian.

What do you mean almost? Arresting people and confiscating their property simply on an allegation? That's fucking fascism right there.

I watched about 20 mins of a 2 hour gameplay and it seems they have made quite a few improvements.

Def on my radar.

Will you go to the virtual Castro and bang a virtual lumberjack?

I'd check this out for no other reason to check out virtual SF. Hang out in North Beach. I wonder if they included Berkeley?

Oh god does Cutter live in/frequent the Bay Area? One more reason to never leave home!

No, I have a lot friends down in Oregon and NoCal. Mostly Eugene, SF and Berzerkely. I used to head down there once or twice a year when I lived on the west coast and go get bombed out in Napa and Sonoma for free. Good times.

I'm sure the suits at EA are having a good laugh today, hahaha!

So you would prefer all the profit go to people who had no hand at all in creating the game: corporate exec bonuses?

How on earth did you ever come to that conclusion? Infer much? When have I ever sided with suits and corporations? I'm a dyed in the wool socialist, man. I believe everyone deserves a living wage and a decent place to live, and good food to eat. I'm not against people getting rich, just so long as they pay their fair share, which unfortunately they don't. I'm also opposed to unfair systems like royalties and copyrights.

You know what else is a perfect tool for criminals and pervs? A personal computer.

Can we define perv?

*starts deleting porn links and browser history*

Peeping Toms. A great way for rapists and pedos to safely stalk victims. They're great tools for B&E artists to scope out and see if anyone is home, see where everything is. They at the very least need to be licensed and come with non-removable/blockable GPS/RFID trackers monitored by the government. And we won't even get into possible terrorist uses or just general liability issues with accidents.

I agree with two of their points:

One, they want to know the name of the game they're being contracted to work on. A respectable voice actor doesn't want to accidentally add "Floppy Cock Massacre Brony Parade" to their resume. It's a two-fold move from the publishers, to keep unannounced games off of voice actor resumes, and to keep them from negotiating higher pay for higher profile games.

Two, game companies routinely demand voice-destroying audio from these people. When your career is based around the functionality of one part of your body, and someone asks you to "dig deeper, we need to feel your anguish, and we need 5 hours of it so the sound effects don't seem repeated"...you can do serious damage to your vocal cords, and that shit can be permanent. Insisting on a form of hazard pay for those roles is legitimate.

Their complaint about royalties sounds dumb to US. But everyone else in a similar field (movie stars, live tv and cartoon voice actors, musicians) get paid extra when their project proves to be lucrative. I can see why they feel "left out". What these voice actors don't understand is that UNLIKE those other professions, the voice actor is NOT front and center. They are a peripheral item. In most games they're at the same level as Flavor Text and Ground Clutter. They add a small bit of grounding to the game world. MOST games. In voice-heavy titles like The Witcher, Mass Effect and the Uncharted games, I could see validity to the voice actor's self-importance. Jennifer Hale IS femshep, and if they'd switched voice actresses, players would have been in an uproar (but it wouldn't have actually hurt sales).

Remember the huge deal there was about Peter Dinklage's bored voicework for Destiny? Bad voice acting CAN bring a good game down. I don't think they're COMPLETELY off-base here, but it looks like whining from the outside.

Oh please, what do you think happens to people working trades or blue collar? Where are their royalties? Fuck if that's the case we all deserve royalties. It such an asinine system that needs to die.

That Sam Harris Ted talk, Stephen Hawking, and plenty of other very smart people have brought up the caution we need to have for real AI.

Unfortunately, long before we get to that point, the remnants of humanity will be killing each other for scraps of food and drinkable water in some sort of Mad Max level wasteland.

I don't think people realize how much we've fucked up the planet, and how rough it's probably going to get in the near future. Even if the human race somehow magically fixes the climate, the level of wealth inequality is only increasing. Eventually people will get tired of starving in the gutter while billionaires buy private islands.

I'm just glad I'm old enough to be safely dead before this planet really turns to shit.

Earth is pretty resilient. More like income inequality and corporations controlling those resources will incite bloody revolution around the globe or straight up WWIII. My money would be on that before some global ecological meltdown.

Stephen is a pretty smart guy, but I think he kind of misses the point here while being right at the same time. If we ever create a pure AI it is likely that eventually it's acomplishments will surpass human ones, making humankind kind of irrelevant and superfluous. There is no reason to believe that it will somehow turn on us, destroying us in the process. I think it's far more likely that it will simply leave us behind while it advances scientifically and technologicaly to a level that we cannot even imagine considering our own limited biological "hardware" and "programming".

You mean like Vger? Until it finally acquires so much knowledge the only question left is 'Is this all that I am? Is there nothing more?'
