You know, it's funny. Whenever I'm downtown I see the people lined up for the food bank they're all smoking. So they can afford $15 for a pack a day but not food? Yeah. Ok.

Cutter you are speaking the truth My math teacher was abysmal, nearly 70 year old by the end of it, slow and annoying to listen to... I hated math, I never got over this.

sigh, so many children are ruined by teachers who never learned HOW to actually teach. They all know a lot of things, they are all smart people, the problem is many don't know how to motivate or *teach* properly.

Btw Cutter, the answer is a universal income not bound to a job. Although I am sure some anti-socialists would like to make you believe that is the end of the world. I think it's better to give everyone money, than to have massive riots on your hands (see France)

Well it will have to be won't it, or the alternative is bloody revolution. I don't think anyone is really looking at the long-term ramifications of robotics. If and when we get to matter replicators a la Star Trek that'll be cool, but between then and now, it's sketchy at best.

Robots will eliminate 6% of all US jobs by 2021, report says. Thanks HARDOCP.

Looks like robotics and engineering is the job of the future (has been for some time) - hope my boy is more interested in maths than I was. When I hit college level I lost all interest.

A lot of that is how its approached to begin with. Don't leave it in the hands of the schools and teachers. If need be, find him a good tutor that can motivate him and get him excited and liking it. I always sucked at math because I had bad teachers. I probably had the worst possible teacher when I started algebra in grade 7. He couldn't even explain to me what a variable was, my English teacher had to. He made it such a painful ordeal I ended up hating it. Same for the rest of STEM subjects. My physics teachers were awesome which is probably why I love it, and my biology and chem weren't horrible but not great either which is why I'm meh about them.

Do everything you can you encourage him into STEM, but don't force it or he'll bolt. I'm sure there are plenty of good books on that subject.

And yeah, 6% that seems outrageously low. I suspect it'll be a lot higher, and even larger another 5 years after that. Question is who the hell will by anything produced by the robots and AI if they don't have jobs. And what will you do with the multitudes or unemployed people? It'll either have to be a guaranteed income via government or it'll be massive crime and eventually a Revolution.

Wicked! And Cuts is tied for 2nd place...so far. Toff

And I'm only one of a handful of people who picked the Rams over the Shithawks. Changed it at the last minute too. Forgot Wilson was injured - sorta kinda - and that they seem to have a real problem with beating the Rams for some reason.

And who is Swezz that's in first place atm?

Spent the whole day doing electrical work getting the last of my renos wireed, lit, and plugged and it all came out swimmingly. Even though I know electrical and have the tools and stuff I still *hate* doing it. I always have that fear in the back of my mind I'll get zapped or burn the house down. Still, I installed these little square integrated thin LED potlights and they look effing cool. I'll post some pics later. This room was a bitch to reno because everything was so off square in height and width. Almost 2 inch different from end to end, and I had to shim the hell out of all my furring strips to square up the walls for the beadboard and cove strips. Pain in the ass it all is, but it really is satisfying to sit back and look at all your hard work when it's done.

For completely ending their livelihood in one fell swoop.

What could they sue Valve for? Valve is covered under Safe Harbor and they can drop anyone anytime they please. And realistically their pockets are way too deep for these guys to take on.

Let's face it, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was brilliant. And the Taylor and Burton film will never be surpassed. It's one film in my permanent library that I generally watch once a year.

Gotta think that if he didn't run to Russia he'd be in line for a pardon.

He'd be in the same boat as Chelsea Manning if he'd stayed.

Perhaps, but like Manning, he deserves jail time. He also deserves a pardon. Chelsea Manning was active duty at the time of her crime. That's a whole different kettle of fish. She also deserves a pardon or at least a commuting of the sentence, but people gotta do time, or the law (even shit laws) mean nothing.

So law takes precedent over right and wrong? Well you certainly would have been a great nazi working at Dachau or the like. Or just a slave owner instead? Whip and work your slaves to death with a big ol' smile on your face...because it's legal right. Fucking fascist.

So much for the 5th Amendment, and our rights to express ourselves. this should never even go to court. Any Judge stupid enough to allow this should be disbarred forever. And if the developer cant take the heat then get the fuck out of the kitchen. Good for Valve too for dumping these asshats. Once Valve dumped them, they pretty much committed digital suicide.

You have every right to express your opinion, just not engage in slander and/or libel.

Cornell Law Libray: Libel

What congress is doing is outlawing gag and no negative review clauses. That doesn't, however, protect you from getting sued for libel. And most judges don't tale issuing those sorts of subpoenas lightly. He obviously felt their complaint was valid enough to warrant it. If Saboth's comments are correct, that there a bunch of groupies of some Youtube clown stalking and harassing this company than they certainly deserve it and that puts an entirely different spin on the whole matter.

Yeah, well if it was as easy to meet someone and have sex with them in real life as it is in porn then people wouldn't need porn, would they?

The muni broadband is just mind-blowing to me. Since the "free market" was not fulfilling the needs of this town, they made their own internet. Then some neighbors said they'd like to get in on that action, but lobbyists have written legislation that was rubber stamped by state legislators that forbid it. It's like if the town decided to plant their own crops then had a plentiful harvest, they decided to sell some to their neighbors, but bought-and-paid-for legislators say it's forbidden, they have to buy from "Crop Corp." at 4x the price.

That's the GOP for you! Always preaching one thing and delivering the other. 'When we say we believe in the free market, we really mean we should be able to monopolize it freely!'

US renewables: Dropping in price, growing in significance.

This is huge, and bodes well for reducing or eliminating coal and NG as electricity producers. The USA has the best wind resources of any country on earth. THe strip from TX to ND alone could provide all the electricity for the US many times over. And the same for solar in the SW US. 330+ days of sun per annum. A small part of AZ paved with solar panels could provide the US with all of it's electrical needs. And distribution could be done via HVDC lines, which lose only 5% over 1000 miles.

Yeah, but there are real major issues with windfarms. In Ontario, thanks the corrupt liberal gov't currently in power, green energy has become a major clusterfuck and point of contention as the Libs have given carte blanche to these companies to pretty much do whatever they want. The result, in part, is that we now have the highest hydro rates in NA. And of course that says nothing about the out of control deficit that's been run up, again in large part, to the shady shenanigans that translated into free tax money for these companies. Yay, lucky us!

A lot of communities are fighting these things tooth and nail, and not because they're anti-green, but because of how they've been implemented. A few here and there are kinda cool, but huge swaths of them in places are an eyesore. And it says nothing of the many health and noise issues people are complaining about these things since they're sprouted up. In fact, they recently made a documentary about it. Which you can watch online here, Big Wind. So, anyone curious about this issue should really give it a watch.

I'm pro-renewable, but anti wind/solar farm. I personally believe that government should simply be providing subsidies to home owners and apartment buildings/condos for localized solar and wind. While everyone knows about solar panels, far fewer know about small scale wind turbines like Windpods. We'd be far better off if every private and corporate living/work buildings were utilizing solar and wind at the source. That would result in a huge savings on energy infrastructure in the long run which wind/solar farms don't achieve.

Yeah, who would take unsourced medical anecdotes from a non-doctor on an internet forum?

I'm not going to waste my time and energy providing links to something anyone can easily find within a minute or two of searching if they're so inclined. If you don't understand why we need dairy, grains, fats, etc. than that's your problem. This isn't rocket surgery. No, let's just listen to some random guy on Youtube spouting bullshit. Yeah, that's the smart thing to do, Stephen. Rolleyes
