We are the robots...

Btw, thanks to everyone yesterday who played along in Sands of Time thread. That's always great fun so keep it going in similar threads.

Seems like Blues is missing some game news today.

Julian Galop, the creator of the original XCOM, showed off more of his studios upcoming game (RockPaperShotgun). And it sounds exactly like the Firaxis XCOM alternative I've been waiting for.

Thanks for that. Looks cool!

Why do you use the word 'randomly' and yet provide a specific criteria?

Because it appeared randomly here predicated on the circumstances I just mentioned. Seriously man, are you trolling here or just obtuse? This isn't rocket surgery.

The rise of multi-cellular lifeforms is predicated on a planet being in a habitable zone - not too close or far from its sun. It's inevitable that life with begin and evolve on these worlds much in the same way the worlds themselves are completely random, form and evolve. And that's just carbon based lifeforms like ourselves. There's no telling if there aren't other lifeforms based on silicon or any of the other common atoms. It's specious and ridiculous that there isn't other life in a (near) infinite universe. If life can appear randomly here, it can - and has - elsewhere in the universe.

On PBS recently they've been airing Stephen Hawking's series Genius, which is about...

Professor Stephen Hawking challenges a selection of volunteers to think like the greatest geniuses in history and solve some of humanity's most enduring questions.

EP2 focuses on other life in the universe - the consensus being it's not only possible but pretty much a forgone conclusion.

And EP6 looks at our place in the universe - galacticaly speaking. It's really fascinating to watch the volunteers work out just how small and insignificant we really are. Buncha people on a little globe in the backwaters of own galaxy which is just one of 100s of billions of other galaxies that we know about. It's almost Pythonesque watching it. You guys would really enjoy it if you haven't seen it already so give the series a watch.

Yes, There Have Been Aliens.

The depressing part is that if there had been, it meant that they never developed interstellar travel which might mean it's nearly impossible to accomplish. Otherwise, there'd be evidence here on Earth of their visitation. I read a calculation once that showed even traveling at 1/10th the speed of light, and taking 100 years to build new spacecraft and jump to new nearby systems, that the entire galaxy would completely colonized in a few million years. Given that the galaxy is 13 billion years old, we should have been colonized already by any civilization that arose more than a couple of million years ago.

You can't travel at the speed of light, but there's nothing that says you can't bypass it. Everything from warp bubbles to folding space to string theory and quantum entanglement are just the beginning. I believe it's fully possible. Simply that man won't survive long enough to get there. Too bad, there's nothing I would have liked better than doing the Silver Surfer thing and make a life out traveling the cosmos.

When he says that, he means next year. My money is on next fall/Xmas. It's already been 6 - count them 6 - years since Skyrim, no way the next one is going to be several years off, that's simply too much money to skip.

I sincerely doubt this cost them any real time or money to do.

Said no developer ever.

Said Bethsoft, simply using all those existing mods to their own benefit.

A similar argument could be made for the environment. By destroying the inhabitable environment, mankind will go extinct, and later on the environment will restore itself to become inhabitable again. So the best way to save the environment is to let mankind destroy it first.

One might as well do nothing for that's exactly the solution.

Fatalism at its finest.

And by that logic, any contribution you make to the discussion is a 'whine' or 'simply to see yourself type' because doing something willful is contrary to the incompatibilist viewpoint when making the claim of determinism.

Wrong, it's pragmatism. It's seeing the same patterns played out over and over and over again throughout history. Its the one thing being a history major teaches you, to see the cycles repeat themselves. Determinism means exertion from an outside force acting upon on us contrary to our will. This is not the case. We bear the fatal flaw within ourselves. The doom and gloom exists because we are fundamentally broken as a species.

You ever think it may be because the lunatics are running the asylum, literally. Most of those captains of industry/execs/Wall St. types/politicians are clinical psychopaths and sociopaths to a greater or lesser degree. They're literally incapable of taking the broad view and seeing - much less doing - what's best for the majority - the needs of the many, as it were - and can only see and will only do what is in their own self-interest. From their perspective if the cost of some violent lunatics happen to go on a killing spree now and then well that's just the cost of doing business. You want an omelette? You have to break some eggs, so to speak.

Take any issue you like, environment, war, poverty, etc. these could easily, easily, be fixed by any rational species. They exist and its absolutely needless that they do. Why do they exist? Because the lunatics run the asylum. This is why mankind simply won't make it in the long run. Contemplate that on the Tree of Woe.

I just can`t fathom this. The obvious, logical step would be to remaster Morrowind/Oblivion - you know, the games that really need this, not Skyrim which has proper gamepad support and which with few mods looks like million dollars anyway.

I can bet any money that their "remaster" won`t look any better than the one I built recently (and which still runs at min 60 fps). The are not gonna change the engine, so geometry/LOD will be the same. So what is the god damn point of this exercise?

Because you can't just uprez those games they'd have to be built again from the ground up. With this I'm guessing they're just using existing mods with a few tweaks here and there. I sincerely doubt this cost them any real time or money to do.
