$130US for a coffee grinder?!? That is seriously hardcore. That's like a 512MB RAM upgrade, or an XP 2700+ processor!

Yep, thanks, dude.

I'm using RIS on my setup, but of course it only allows installations, not diskless bootstrapping. I was hoping there was a solution for doing this in Windows (I've heard that they're out there).

Next. I'll be networking booting a new install of Windows XP Pro to measure the performance differential of SATA vs ATA.

What software/OS combo are you using to accomplish this?

That's kinda cool, but I'm getting sick of being asked to re-buy shit I already have... Why can't they just sell me the second disc?

Crispy, gmail is like juno and hotmail: A web based email client. Currently in beta, hence invite required to join.

Ah, good. For a moment there I felt as though I was missing out on something that all the cool kids were doing... As it is, I run my OWN email server with http AND pop3. And because it's my own I have UNLIMITED storage and attachment capabilities--So nyah!

Ok so if my brother comes over, installs HL2 off of the 5 cd's, logs himself into Steam - will we be able to play it right away? Isnt there another "check" that it has to do that takes like 15min or something?

From what I understand, the game on the CD comes in an encrypted form, so once you install it it will connect to Steam, validate your package(s) and then unlock the game. Folks have reported that this takes 5-15 minutes.

Also theorhetically, from what I have read can't someone who bought an online package (IE Bronze) and went to a friends house - logged in - downloaded the game - then set it to play in "offline mode" - spread the game around to as many people as he wanted? (The single player portion atleast).

I don't konw about this. I'd assume that Valve has gone through the trouble of encypting the data and requiring online validation to prevent exactly that type of scenario.

Can I get steam on my computer - start up my own account - and pre-download the game files so that when he comes over and logs in as himself we dont haveto wait for all the files to download?

Nope. I looked into doing that as I was a little afraid of dropping my $59.95 only to find out that the throughput sucked ass and the download was going to take 2 weeks. You cannot pre-cache the files, and THEN purchase.

On the plus side I finally made the jump and I've ordered the silver package through steam. I'm happy to report that the throughput is averageing around 225KB/sec. Now I'm just going to have to leave the house so I don't sit here staring at the progress monitor all day.

Ray,

I'm tottering on the edge between buying through Steam or going down to pick up the boxed retail version (only because I can imagine the pounding Valve's servers are taking right now). What's the t-shirt like in the HL2 CE package? Maybe if it's a really kickass shirt then it'll be worth buying the CE.

EDIT: Oh, and while we're at it; what's the hat like in the 'Gold' Steam package?

OK, so now I'm thinking of purchasing HL2 through the steam option I see that the 'silver' package contains Valve's back catalog. Does that include Condition Zero then?

Oh, and what does the retail package entitle you to?

Thx.
