SW:TOR is basically KOTOR 3 with multiplayer. The Jedi and the Sith each have four base classes each with their own storyline, and then there are various side quests that everyone shares.
When I played SWG at launch, there were roughly 4 enemy types and the combat wasn't anything amazing. TOR's combat isn't groundbreaking either but it's more streamlined and fun overall than SWG's.. Generally, TOR's combat is much like KOTOR's.
And overall, TOR is pretty much KOTOR 3(+). Compared to KOTOR, the areas are bigger and somewhat less linear and the graphics are better and there are more things to do in general (crafting, more quests, other people running around). Compared to SWG, the zones are much smaller but more focused. Some of the zones are tighter (Coruscant, Sith starting zone [I forget the name]) and some are more wide open (Tython, Taris). I don't think TOR has random missions of any kind, though it does have dailies. Also note that I only got up to about level 20, so I didn't see most of the planets.
In short, I thought SWG was quite good when it first came out, but I think TOR is far better. The smallish zones are the only real negative, but they are highly developed and just generally 'fit' better than in most MMOGs (where you suddenly go from a dark forest to a standard fantasy-type forest to a jungle).
I can easily recommend TOR to anyone. If you don't like MMOGs, turn off chat and imagine that the other people running around are echoes of other realities There are a few zones that are realistically multiplayer only, but they're not required - they give nice equipment though, and I had fun in them. Lag is noticeable but barely. I saw 2 or 3 instances of pseudo rubber banding where people were stuck for a few seconds, then they suddenly moved.. but for all I know they had Alt-Tab'd or the like.
tl;dr TOR GOOD
This is a good summary.
While it doesn't have near the social options as SWG or any of its sandbox charm (or good space combat *cough*), TOR excels at telling a story and getting the player absorbed in the game just as you did in the original KOTOR, Mass Effect, or any other Bioware title. The bonus is that you get to do all this with your friends and it makes group content, such as flashpoints (dungeons), VERY fun.
While combat is very much like most of the hotkey MMOs out there, each class and specialization class has their own mechanics, some of them are pretty unique. For example Bounty Hunters, as they use abilities, build up heat. If BHs build up too much heat, they can't use those abilities. Also, if a BH maxes out his heat, it will decrease at a MUCH slower rate than if he had held back some and kept his heat at 50% or lower. I found this to be pretty unique as most MMOs just have a flat energy regeneration rate.
There's also certain zones on a few planets that are free for all PVP, and there's some actual reasons to be there too. The PVP zones feature rare resource nodes in higher quantities than you would typically find in the world, there are also vendors there that sell special items you can't find anywhere else. I've also heard of exclusive world bosses that spawn in these areas.
Oh... and there's Huttball, and it's awesome. I hope they will add a spectator mode to Huttball.
So yeah... no, it doesn't have all the dances that SWG had, nor the spiffy fully customizable player housing, or the ability to be the galaxys best shipwright. Come to think of it I haven't seen any pink hot pants either. That said, TOR offers up an array of rich storylines, well animated/interesting combat, and just feels much more focused than SWG did.
Now, will Bioware be able to add in content updates at a quick pace like Trion has done with Rift? Time will tell.
