Got to be the best series of games over the years, well done (could swear it was longer, sure was faking illness at 12 to say home and play the first one on the Amiga)
Best series? Hmmm... it's certainly consistently good value for money and seems to take unforced risks with it's formula which is a good thing, even if it doesn't always work so I think I might agree.
First Civ was great, but 2 was the high water mark for me. Nuclear wastelands, climate change disasters, killer music, throne rooms and leader animations on the CD-ROM. So epic.
3 still to me has some of the coolest terrain and development graphics. The combat had an interesting rework.
4 was almost better than 2, but optimum play (Village farming) got a bit boring and the 3d graphics didn't feel quite as snappy as the older games. Fall from Heaven 2 turned out to be the best part of it's legacy.
Civ V is amazing... now. And still gets the odd patch which is awesome (And expected given it's probably still selling super well all these years later).
Yet I'm still a bit wary of pre-order given they are hiding a (usually vanilla) civ in it and after the pretty thin launch and dodgy DLC program behind Civ 5, the tech issues at launch of Xcom 2 and the banality of Beyond Earth - Firaxis, as much as I love them, need to wait for my cash (Though they will eventually get it no doubt unless something truly terrible happens).
Xcom 2 was awesome despite the initial tech problems and Civ 5 got REALLY good once the two expansions (And super cheap DLC sales) brought the thunder so I imagine whatever this game ends up being at launch it will end up being a worthy Civ game after a year or two. But fingers crossed for launch!
Railroads and Pirates! Are desperate for modern updates as well lads, get on it! Also Xcom 3 needs even more of the simulation-style systems of the OG Microprose games please. My wallet is waiting.
