So what is the tactical part comparable to? I like the UFO series but wish the combat was more Silent Storm style. Base, resource, and people management was good in Afterlight but the combat was not nearly as deep as I had hoped.

first you equip your soldiers with rifles, bombs, medikits, etc, then you play the game in turn based mode
just like X-COM series really

personally i think the series has gone downfall since the excellent chaos theory
the double agent wasn't the kind of game i expected, and this is going to be even worse

this game is suposed to be played in the dark, but instead they force you more and more into daylight and firefights
the whole thing is getting generic, and if they are going to continue down that path, it's going to get really lame really fast

well this game def doesn't deserve a 4.25/5

i've been playing it today for about 4 hours, and it has so many problems i have no idea where to even start
and the manual sucks btw

first of all, the combat on the globe is prety poorly done, because it's not in a separate window but it happens in real time now. since you can't investigate ufo's, if they fall into the ocean, it means you'll gothrough a lot of pain to shoot them down on the land

soldier managment is not that great either, now you can't hire new soldiers, but you receive one ever now and then; if you lose soldiers in combat, they don't actually die (??), but are instead moved into hospital for a freaking long time, which is relaly disturbing

in tactical part, the combat animations are pretty slow and crappy as well (the shooting animation is the same for standing and crouching mode for god's sake! it just look stupid when the bullet flies out of thin air; grenades have no throwing animations either)

i don't know why, but the camera always centers on the action (even if that "action" is a bullet being shot, or a moving character), which can be really annoying and disorienting

posibly the worst part is the interface, i'd really like to see more logical arrangment of buttons in menus

also in a game like this i definitely want to have hotkey interface, but in this game theres none; don't ask me why, but the need for it is so blatantly obvious that i'd gladly punch the designers in their head for not including this
it's very annoying when you have to click 3 times just to shoot once; could use hotkeys for crouching, switching members, etc

the context menus are missing, for everything you need to look into ufopedia

the MAP is missing in the tactical part (???)

the option to conserve AP for crouching or interrupt attack is missing

anyway this game need some SERIOUS patching before it will actually be worth playing imho

my score right now would be 65%, and even that is because the tactical part is "okay", and does deliver the XCOM'ish feeling (if we take away all the problems ofc)

the multiplay mod makers are just trying to prove the concept is possible

honestly i doubt anything useful will ever come out of this

it'd require a lot of time, work and dedication and as is the case with many modmakers, they just don't have what it takes to make large scale things like this

whichever way you look, it's still a single player game

Microsoft piracy check comes calling.

said differently

Microsoft installs legit malware on their user's PCs to harass them if their version of the OS somehow isn't legit. Woot.

If everything goes as planned we'll see 3 kickass RPGs this year: TES4, G3 & NWN2. I'm buying them all.

Good times.

I don't think so. Look at his post history; it ain't bad commentary...too bad he's such an idiot about SF

Er... you call me an idiot because I've never encountered any problems with SF and I'm willing to say that? Unlike you smartass americans we europeans get quite a bit of games with Starshit protection enabled. So we have to eat the shit and move on. And it doesn't blow up our computers.

As I said I think SF like all other protections is just placebo for publishers so they think they're "protected" - only god knows from what - certainly not from piracy.

What's all the fuss about SF protection anyways? I've played a bunch of games wtih this protection and never encountered any problem whatsoever.

It's just urban myth that this protection causes trouble.

Afterall, it's not a handheld nuke it's just placebo that makes publishers more confident.

It's just a matter of time before they figure out CONDOMS provide by far the best copy-protection.

It really doesn't matter what the devs are using. They're not playing for enjoyment, they just need the game to run. You don't need a steady framerate to build maps. A 9800 might well be fine, but you can't judge by the dev machines.

There's a pretty big diffrence in performance between 9800 & 9800pro (like 6800 vs 6800GT).

With my post I just wanted to say that it's not worth running into PC hardware shops screaming and replace a 9800pro/XT or 6600GT with something better because it just might run the game quite well anyways, and in the end you just end up wasting quite some cash for those extra details that may or may not be worth it :P.

I guess we'll have to wait & see how optimized the game really is, but judging from shots&movies the game looks a lot like Far Cry with all details maxed and that game works extremly well on abovementioned cards, staying well above 30fps most of the time. Maybe it's a bad comparison but I'll definitely wait for game release first without upgrading anything since I suspect my 6600GT will run the game well enough.

Also peoples askin if Geforce 4 will run the game - it won't, because the game needs Pixel shaders 2.0 or better (DX9 compatible vid card). Same applies to any other card that doesn't fully support DX9 acceleration.

It's known that most of the devs have been using XP 2600+, 1GB RAM & 9800pro machines for game development so I must assume that kind of machine will be able to run the final version of the game somewhat well (speculation: 1024 @ medium details). In that catagory also falls GF 6600GT card wich is somwhat better than 9800pro but still lacks a lot of power when compared to 6800GT and such.

X800XT,6800GT should run with full details but no AA, and latest cards from ATI & NVIDIA should be able to run the game with AA aswell.

Note: I've collected the above info from elderscrolls forums so it's kindof semi-official but that's almost the best info we got atm.

AA missle agility has been improved to unrealistic proportions in 1.2. Now they're able to do instant 180-degree turns, fly thru water, and they also track allied units a lot more.

Another thing I was wonderin about visible UAVs is:

How do you know which UAV is yours and whcih is from enemy if both sides are scanning the same area?

that diary update surely didn't answer why the hell they wouldn't release for windows xp and 2000 (wtf does it have to do with media center capabiltiy). They should just shut up about their decision instead of being dishonest because they don't want to admit it's because of MS wanting to push Vista.

They didn't answer it because they never will. Maybe they just want to be the first group to realease a game "Designed for Windows Vista" and win a 1.000.000$ award by M$ in doing so.

I guess M$ will also be selling a special package of Windows Vista: Halo 2 Edition.

And they seem to have a lot of problems with BF2.

I'm not getting these new drivers :P.

Vaporware. Not holding my breath for it being released.

Yeah, 1 year = time & money loss bigtime. Only AA titles can usually get so much extra time.

I mean look - the game is finished but still needs 1 year of develpment??? WTF have they been doin?

I think at some point the publisher is just gonna get tired of all this and ditch the project.

I suppose they could just make a D3 with prettier graphics and use battlenet like in D2. I kinda have mixed feelings on this, I liked D2 alot but the more they patched it the harder it got to solo in the game until it got to the point of being more work and less fun for me.

I kinda hope D3 will be somthing like GuildWars in appearance and gameplay (no monthly fee).

If you ask me making another MMORPG just doesn't make sense, they'd be practically competing with themselves.

I bought D1 & D2+LoD and both were well worth the money, actually that was some of the most well-spent money. Even after 5.5 years D2 is still a very cool & enjoyable game.

I just hope they won't make D3 into another WOW-like cashcow.
