That 'wellness chamber' is the most dystopic thing I've seen in quite a while. It looks like something straight out of The Onion or a campy YA novel.

Sometimes I feel like I'm alone in actually being turned off by weapon crafting zaniness and the general over-the-top guns, without hard games keep pushing that sort of stuff.

I heard the games shit and randomly just spawns constant tanks and helicopters over and over.

Is this true?

I wouldn't call the game shit, but vanilla before this DLC did leave a lot to be desired and got repetitive with no goals fast. Tanks and chopper spawning is finite, but most missions spam them at you, spawning pretty close, often blatantly so. For that, though, there are mods that change the spawning behavior, as well as improve on AI in general, so it's only an issue if you want it to remain an issue.

I've not tried the DLC or read up on it since it was delayed for the first time; if the career mode is decent it should alleviate the feeling of grind, and they've had well over a year to see all the complaints and community fixes for missions and core gamplay, so I'd hope a fair chunk of that is addressed...

Trespasser was such a confusing mess of a game that I'm still surprised I or anyone else actually beat it . Also it ran 12 FPS on era hardware...

That said, I still have really fond memories of how exploring and finding things felt so much better than practically any other game since. Walking through an abandoned building and finding some ammo, or through some piece of jungle and finding an overturned jeep with a new gun next to some bones...

Torn Banner developers got into a big argument with Steam users on the Community page and the thread was locked. They kept making arguments that Steam didn't support or care for developers because of their 30% commission and how Epic is now the future because they help fund the game in advance and only take 10%. Failing to comprehend that this is an unsustainable startup strategy to try and grow their book while losing $100's of millions a year. Can't really hate Steam for not doing likewise. If they think Epic is going to keep doing this indefinitely they don't understand how anything works.

If their game isn't on Steam, why are they using the Steam forums to communicate with players? Oh that's right, Epic doesn't have forums. These developers are happy to use Steam's services, for free, while complaining about Steam's larger cut. I wonder why Steam doesn't disable the community features of these games until they actually release on Steam.
Chivalry 2 isn't on Steam and it has no "community features", so there's nothing to disable.

Chivalry 1, however, is on Steam, and people are leaving lovely and relevant reviews for it such as "Traitor Banner Studios", "say no to epic!", "
Taking a dump on your roots with that epic exclusive, that's cool", "Trash company, 1 year epic exclusive for Chiv 2, eat the entirety of my ass Torn Banner Studios."

And people wonder why game developers have taken to despise "gamers", when the most vocal of them are so clueless, entitled, and full of vitriol...

I mean, yeah? If he had bills to pay and his store wasn't making enough money or was even running at a loss, pretty much because neither he nor anybody else can compete against Steam, sort of means Steam made him do it. That Humble Bundle ended up in the hands of such a great company like IGN (and we're already seeing its effects...) is an unsurprising shame.

Tenshinochi wrote on May 8, 2021, 04:52:
Maybe because the alternative this 'free market' leads to is more like Amazon. Where a single company uses it's billions to stifle competition in an attempt to become the monopoly. This by for example selling products at a loss, something Epic has already hinted at to be willing to do and has to some extend already done this through a sale without consent from the devs where the explanation was that Epic would still pay the full price revenue to the devs.
While you claim Steam is the defacto monopoly, the price deal provides air to competition, we've seen plenty of other stores pop up like GOG, greenman gaming, humble store, Epic store. It allows stores to differentiate themselves on service level instead of trying to stifle competition, which in my opinion is more of a free market.
Steam has been operating for so long with such a large audience that it already has all the features any consumer could think of wanting. The only differentiation the different stores can possibly have is either in what games they offeror in price.

The former means exclusives, and even EA, Ubisoft, MS, and ActiBlizzard, the only ones with the internal studios capable of pushing out more than a couple of games a year, with their own stores, and massive marketing power, have given up and accepted that Valve owns the market, selling their games on Steam and taking the hit. Epic is trying for this angle, but I think everyone can see how well that is going, between the massive financial loss and the absolute demonization from consumers.

The latter is just flat out forbidden by Valve; you allow your game's regular price lower price on another store other than it is on Steam, you get booted off Steam.

So, what can a competing platform do to differentiate itself on a service level? What feature can a competing store bring to the table that would actually attract new customers, and that Steam couldn't just copy before it would make an impact? You'd think GoG's DRM-free offering would be a knockout punch, yet it's clear consumers really don't care about it (nevermind publishers).

Tenshinochi wrote on May 8, 2021, 04:52:
Another reason is that people have a vested interest in certain stores due to the games they have bought on that store and where the license is stored on that store's servers. So if the store was to go under, people would possibly lose access to their games. This is a problem with how the stores have evolved. Even for GOG which offers DRM free copies of games, if you don't have the storage to store all of them, you're dependent on the store.
"Steam has taken the market hostage" is a pretty good argument against Steam and practically every other platform, really. Your toaster shouldn't stop working because the store you bought it from shut down, and the implicit threat of that happening shouldn't be what stops people from shopping elsewhere.

The Free Market is "free" and "fair" in the same sense as ye olde King of the Hill games were; once you're on top, the easier it is to stay on top, and no one can beat you 1v1.

This is the same company that countersued warzone.com because, according to them, it's not possible to confuse the Warzone game with CoD:Warzone
https://www.bluesnews.com/cgi-bin/board.pl?action=viewthread&boardid=1&threadid=221057&id=1309512

Apparently actiblizzard thinks consumers are too god damned stupid to differentiate between a dog in a cartoon and a computer fantasy action RPG, but are totally savvy enough to not confuse the online computer game Warzone with the online computer game CoD:Warzone.

Fuck them for trademarking common words.

I know their culture is most likely anti-creative and probably nickels and dimes their lead developers out of their minds, but surely they can at least learn to back the fuck off and let some studio make some game at some point?

To their credit, at least Amazon's gaming division seems to be keeping its people employed after cancelling stuff, unlike, say, Google...

Self-publishing Hitman 3 was a big risk that really paid off and I'm sure the Epic bag of money didn't hurt either.

Hitman 3 was released in January btw, it's just not on Steam yet.

For every contract that's been made public, Epic's "bag of money" only kicks in if the game doesn't meet the sales expectations it'd have "elsewhere" within a year. Which basically means that Hitman 3 made more money on EGS in four months than IO expected it to make "elsewhere" throughout a year.

Whether that was IO being way too conservative with their expectations, the halved sales fee on EGS compared to Steam, or other factors (like higher spotlight time on EGS) is not something I can guess at.

In any case, for an independent studio and a project of this size/quality, recouping costs after just four months, while the game still has DLC in the works _and_ the studio has a licensed project going on (007), is very good news for them.

*and to note, the reason why Epic's bag of money based on sales can still be considered to be "money up front" and pay expenses is because you can take that contract to an investor and they'll feel comfortable in dropping some money because they know that they can still get their money back on a total flop based on the Epic cash alone

How many people searching for a Call of Duty battle royale with all the latest fancy graphics do you think are interested in a Risk-like browser strategy game =p

Regardless of whether Activision is in the right here, fuck 'em. God knows if someone made a tabletop game about medieval combat only available in Finland and called it "Warzone", Acti would destroy them. Then fire a couple hundred low level devs and give their executives a bonus.
