I'm not saying it's bad. I'm saying the game carries a mood that brings me down. You can argue that's a good thing, but then I'll just slowly back away from that discussion.

It's a good thing, yes. The ability to instill these moods and evoke emotions is a strong supporting point in the unnecessarily-ongoing argument over whether games are art. In fact I'd say that the Ocean House Hotel level, with having no enemies whatsoever and using the atmosphere and the odd creepy little girl to cause fear, is a better example of the horror genre than 95% of the efforts by Hollywood over the past 50 years.

Adds realism? What? My first encounter with in game ads was in Planetside, on a far-from-Earth planet in the distant future. I had to rush back to base to re-arm.

Plastered all over this non-Earth future base were ads for Deuce Bigalow 2.

It felt so real! It wasn't jarringly out of place at all. On a side note, that was when I stopped playing Planetside.

So a game with shit graphics independently developed for the PC and offered online for free is able to make money. Not a lot, granted, but it's in the black, largely thanks to awesome gameplay.

But PC GAMING IS DEAD DUE TO PIRACY, huh publishers? You guys still gonna stick with that line? Hah, I'm kidding, we know you are.

Save game corruption in the Settlers, too? People on the Subsim forum are still reporting losing save games if they save in the online mode. Wonder if the two are connected. Oh wait, yes, they are, heh.

The iPad as the next incredible mobile gaming device? Well the iPhone was said to be so, as was the iPod touch, as was the Ngage (admittedly a whole different class of device), etc.

They just keep rolling out the same article with a search and replace on the device name, don't they. Journalism is dead.

Awesome! Now if they can get some private dedicated server action going on they might get my money!

For what reason?
No mods, so the only thing that allows is server side hax.

For the reason that people can maintain their own servers for their preferred gaming associates, rather than relying on a centralized server out of their control.

Or in other terms, so we don't have to put up with pubbies and can keep playing when EA's servers break. Worked pretty well with BF2, I felt. Find a decent clan server, don't act like a douchebag, and it's a delightful gaming experience all around.

I saw a claim that Ubisoft had locked these users out from the server side until they've returned their manuals for replacement. I'm sceptical.

Can anyone confirm this?

If Ubisoft removes the DRM, the pirates win. If they do not remove the DRM, the paying customers lose.

How did they not think they'd end up in this situation?

A couple of people on Subsim's forums are still claiming they can't get in. It could just be their own connection issues of course, but I wonder if that means Ubi has blocked off their subnets to recover from the DDoS and now those users who happen to share IP blocks with the DDoSers are now shit outta luck.

And if that hasn't happened yet, I wonder how long until it does.

Yeah. I've got SH2, 3, and 4, and then bought 3 and 4 again in a cheapo Steam pack to stop futzing with DVDs. I'd have gone for 5 hook, line, and sinker. But there are limits of acceptable DRM.

Your average console has difficulty with hardcore simulation games like, say, submarine sims.

This is one of those things we want to get perfect before introducing it to players...

Maybe I'm bitter after SWG and the like, but this seems like a code phrase meaning "If we get around to it it'll be halfassed and unsatisfying. If we get around to it."

SecuROM is used on the beta to prevent modification of the game client, and will be completely uninstalled when the beta is removed.

That is a pretty bold lie.

Well there are two other reasons that I haven't seen brought up in the comments yet. One, didn't all the 2010 games get the big push for in-game advertising, even in single player? This is a good way to make sure all the fans of the game are pushed to the new advertastic setup. And two, EA has whined for a while about used game sales. This is a delightful way to hamstring those.

Oh hell let it hit the crappy shithole town my mortgage is stuck in. We're not exactly rural but with all the foreclosures and poverty-stricken children standing in the road it still seems rather zombie apocalypse-like.
