It only takes a few days to ship across Europe from play.com.

Time, precious? For a game? I always wondered who paid the extra money that I was saving, you are funding my discounts Thanks

For hardware you may want to check China or Japan and so on and buy direct from the manufacturer, I do when I can. Usually it is priced in USD which is worthless so you save both ways, you save on the exchange and on the lack of reseller branding markup

I lost count of how much I save every year from just taking a little extra time or even in stores haggling

For books, I have seen huge diffrerences in prices between Amazon UK, Book Depository and Play.com especially technical books that are expensive usually, so its worth shopping around and I don't have to worry about buying a minimum amount to get free shipping

http://www.playusa.com/

Why not order from Canada or Mexico or somewhere if it is cheaper? Have you checked?

For books try bookdepository.co.uk, FREE WORLDWIDE shipping. Why pay Amazon's rip off prices?

OMG REALLY! ITS CHANGING, YA THINK!!!

I will use whatever is the cheapest, currently that is www.play.com I buy from there just to get the activation code then download over Steam.

Once they start changing their pricing to be cheaper than today then yeah maybe I will listen.

They have to jump through MY HOOPS to get MY MONEY, not the other way around.

Once they start being their own retailer (by not having the ability of other retailers to sell discs on the shelf or web store) YOU LOSE as you are stuck to their pricing, NO COMPETITION, NO COMPETITIVE RETAILERS.

YOU LOSE. It all boils down to one thing, MONEY and that is where I decide where I spend it, not them.

It is CHEAPER to buy a hard copy than a digital only copy, What version do you think I buy? Yeah, the hard copy. Electronic only copies are mostly more expensive. What kind of dolt pays more money for that?

Look st the current Steam sale on now, I can still get it cheaper on Play.com. I don't have to pay shipping or tax, what you see is what you pay, on Steam, they bang on tax on top of prices that are already overpriced compared to play.com

Go figure.

Who said anything about shockwave?

If they are pushing it over the web, can I purchase this from other retailers (usually at heavily discounted even for pre order such as play.com). If they are going to be the only sellers of this then its dead in the water as I for one refuse to buy anyting at full retail.

I never said tribes wasnt fantastic, I bought a few licences myself and played it for over 5 years, not a single game has ever gotten that much money and time from me. So where you got the idea I was attacking Tribes games (appart from the Vengeance crap) beats me

You remind me of people on Yahoo chat who non stop rant on about every time they press the Ignore button LOL.

Not that I give a rats bottom what you think heh because you are a nobody on the internet posting anonymously just like me

Well, "lab rat" is an accurate term for Portal You are in a lab, and are a test subject (rat).

Portal was an experiment by Valve (listen to their commentary) and it will most likely be expanded upon later (perhaps bundled with Episode Three).

Also another game that is going be big in March 2008 is Spore.

Steam is just a browser for your games, it is just a store portal, stats tracking framework and launcher updater manager.

Steam is just that, not the actual ENGINE, that can be whatever you want. Source, Crytek whatever. You can even manage non steam enabled games via Steam.

No it is not Shockwave, it is their own runtime that they are building based on their game engine.

Steam is like iTunes, nothing more, you don't need itunes to play your music, it is just a manager framework.

They give the impression that the web browser is used to access the game that is then launched from the web browser container (their page).

They want into the gaming as a service market, nothing less. You will have no offline or LAN mode.

Anyway, the game looks shit even for an early experiment.

Im giving my money to more interesting games such as portal and spore nowdays. Im tired of the FPS milkwhore companies.

What made tribes, freedom of movement and actions, deployables, teamwork, vehicles, wide open maps which give freedom of movement, jets, mods (especially a large variance of mods from classic, to lego type mods right up to massive stonking armour mods - my fav , and not least, hackability, funability and tkability. YES, that freedom to have fun at your teams expense is what also helped tribes be great.

One of my biggest hates of multiplayer games is 3 minuite rounds like UT. I want 30 to 60 minuite games. without spending time watching a loading screen.

Drop or dumb down any one of those and you kill it right out the door and I wont touch it.

It would also open it up as a vector for various attacks. How are they going to handle the keys that are accelerator keys to the browser? So many bad things with gaming in a BROWSER.

I never get goughed because I never buy pre Christmas and wait for the sales and buy from places like play.com.

Only dolts get gouged by pre ordering etc..

As for being platform independant, all runtimes have to be ported to all architectures in order to run. Doesnt matter what runtime you choose. You have to choose (or build) one that runs on your target architectures. All they have done it sounds like is a custom runtime sitting in a browser container and I am not too excited or eager for this.

I have given up hope on a good Tribes followup just as I have given up on the Amiga revival and the Commodore brand.

I moved on to other game genre's such as Portal. I see more entertainment in that once they develop that lab rat genre further.

I am also waiting on Spore next year, again I wont pay full price on that I let the dolts pay up for that so I get it cheaper

What is their choice of graphics and audio rendering? OpenGL/AL, DirectX? I'm guessing OGL. I won't touch this if it is controlled via a browser session or container. Too risky and too erronous.

"find a way to bring that whole PC multiplayer gaming experience we miss back"

That means no consoles. Being in a browser also means no consoles. Also means no Mac, given that more and more people are switching to Macs (myself included), they have limited their market already.

That's America If it is anonymous and open what can they do

You could argue that they killed the Tribes franchise and are therefore no longer protecting it by actively persugin it.

Use it or lose it.

However, one genre that is making a big comeback is the "Lab rat" genre such as Portal.

They can use the same genre, physics and concepts but not have the same artwork and branding.

A total make over Mod on a good engine would even do. Once the cat is out of the bag, good luck getting it in

How about; Tribes: Portals , 2 good games rolled into one

Tribes 2 rocked the FPS genre
Portal brings us the lab rat genre

I don't like the HUD, or the trails, or the models. If you want the tribes experience, load up Tribes 2 and forget about these lame attempts. It won't ever be the same.

There was another Tribes clone built on the same engine but it still sucked. The clones always try to be "DIFFERENT" in some way, which just ruins the feel of the game. What we need is nothing different, just an UPDATED Tribes 2.

Thats what we are crying for. NOT SOMETHING DIFFERENT. That is where they all fail.

Why not build it on top of the Crysis engine
