beta??? Jul 11, 2007, 23:52
Jul 11, 2007, 23:52

Was their a closed beta recently???

Because no way is a game of this caliber going to make shelves in 2 months without a decent length of beta.

There might be something very ugly happening here with publishers pushing the game or finances drying up.

Otherwise that means it will be gold within like 4 weeks(+4 weeks to shelves), which I cannot see how that is possible without a lengthy beta for a game of this potential caliber.

Something isn't adding up and is fishy, EA and Crytek isn't even confirming this info that the marketing dept. put out there. I hope it gets pushed a couple months, I actually hope they do a closed beta atleast and polish, polish, polish. Then when done, polish some more.

E3 with no early announcements...

It will probably be a sleeper. Publishers used to announce early so they weren't overshadowed from all the other action and announcements at the show, no chance of that happening now.

I've been steering pretty clear of this title not to get spoiled on info and hoping the retail release will be worth purchasing. Barring some bad early reviews or major hickups this will be the next purchase since SupCom.

I'm not understanding some of these comments, unless they are from just lack of time with the game. I know it's not everyones style...and it had it's share of bugs...but

X3 had plenty of immersive feel...
It felt like like real space more than probably any space sim before it. The ship scale feels huge, but the sectors are too big for people to get a sense of scale unless you are close to a ship or station, then you know.

The sectors are small??? List me 5 games that "render" that scale and size in it, too hard, ok list me 2. The sectors are very large X,Y,Z, almost too big because sometimes you have to search for things on the outskirts.

Oh and as for graphics, X3 has the best ship renders of any space sim. Unfortunately they had to tone graphics down a bit because peoples machines couldn't handle it.

People can complain if they didn't like the game or it's style, but some of those other complaints are not accurate. I too would like a Freespace style game again, but this is just a different style of game.

I'm still amazed Egosoft continues pouring free time to test and package bonus packs, etc. I applaud them.

"Combat is more like Homeworld with a single ship. You click to move and click which weapons fire at what target."

Gahhhh!

You mean you don't even fly through space first person in your ship?
It's missing the immersiveness of actually flying in a ship and thereby actually feeling like your in space?

So is it a similar simulation style to X3?
Is it more action based than X3 or less?
Obviously it is deeper, just wondering if dogfighting skills have anything to do with anything or is it basically just time/money/technology or your dead (the usual MMO recipe).

4 months is a long time ago yet.

Anyway, how do they see this as a smart way to go?

You still have to go through all the tiresome stages of development, make assets, art, levels, QA, Alpha, Beta, testing, polishing. You can't really cut the time of those down so much that it makes it worthwhile to do smaller episodic content, atleast IMO. Unless you make everyone buy the whole "box" for full price that is.

AMDzone, I thought they would be slanting in favor of the 2900xt benchmarks. Imagine my suprise, when they didn't even test with AMD. Whats wrong with that picture?

You would think DX10 would be showing alot of quality benefits for the cost.

Afterall, DX10 is supposed to increase performance and lower overhead. So you should be able to add alot more eye candy (atleast a noticeable amount).

When my fps gets cut in half, I want to "see" the reasons.
Up till now the results have been noticeably abysmal for any DX10 software. I don't blame drivers, I blame MS for a poor performing OS, untested driver model, and an API that isn't cutting the mustard.
I won't be suprised if DX10 won't be prominent on devs radars, DX9 will work just fine on XP and Vista, maybe DX10 actually costs performance. Too early to say for sure either way.

DX10 may work as a marketing tool for a reason to move to Vista (hopefully that wasn't the major reason for it, i wouldn't be suprised though), but pretty soon that marketing scheme may backfire and give us all reason to stay with XP.

Who is this Dan and why should we believe all that he says?

I should add a note about the /3GB, /4GT and /PAE Windows boot.ini switches, too, because they often come up when people are talking about 4Gb-plus Windows PCs.

They are all useless to you. You do not want them.

That is plain not true, I personally do want /3GB along with a userva switch, for reasons Dan doesn't understand apparently. If you are limited to a 32 bit OS and an application has the ability to address more than 2GB (set with a 'Large Address Aware' flag), you can make 3GB available to the application, where it is normally limited to 2GB virtual address space(usually several 100 MB's of actual private bytes less actually available to the application). Several games can surpass 2GB and benefit from >2GB RAM up to 3GB addressable application space. Besides, the kernel having 1+GB available is enough.

People should use /3Gb if they know why they are doing it and understand how memory allocation works along with it's pitfalls.

Something else many don't seem to know is even a 64 bit OS is limited to only 2GB available application space for any 32 bit program. So 32 bit apps and games won't use your 8TB of RAM in x64, instead it will only use up to 2GB, just like a 32 bit OS. DOH!

I realized when doing beta for SupCom, it really takes away from the game for me to do beta. Won't be doing that again.

Someone out there will do some comparisons in performance w/ dx9/dx10 Vista/XP. Post some links if you find em.

The COH engine favors ATI, so the 2900xt should end up looking good here with the first supposedly unbiased dx10 benchmarks.

Blah blah blah...Same old tired gameplay.

Those screens and movie look like a mimic, not a new game, it's the same old mechanics, same view, same gameplay. Blah.

Oh well if it ain't broke for some people don't fix it. I'm glad many players will enjoy this style of play, they can make room in other RTS communities for people wanting a little more depth of gameplay.

"According to our usual sources, the current drivers for HD Radeon 2900XT does not work too well for CrossFire operation. It would take probably the final driver to fully support the CrossFire feature."

umm the drivers are as final as they will get, they are pressed on a CD in the MFR boxes for the cards. How much more final can they be.

But yes these drivers do suck pretty bad, some games just run pretty bad with 2900xt as well. Finally now that ATI is finally coming out with a DX10 card, 7 months later, soon people can bitch and moan about ATI's drivers. I'm sure their will be more drivers coming and damn soon, but too little too late for monday.

So this is Flagship's take on episodic content (Valve), as well as pay addons for the game (Bethesda), with a mmog monthly payment model.

I just have one curious question for all the proponents for pay to play and think it is good for gaming...What happens when all games have additional monthly charges on them? How many games will you get to play? (do the math, check your bank account)

It could happen, don't say it won't / can't, especially if Microsoft Live has it's way. Right now is the testing grounds that people are telling the world it's ok to charge additional for games. people will charge wherever people will play.

BTW: Realize you will likely be paying a monthly fee for fixed bandwidth sometime soon from your ISP as well.
